You and the Children can Celebrate DNA Day!

B'SD

17 Nisan, 5776

It's the middle of Passover and families are sharing quality time together. Anybody can appreciate the Celebrate DNA Day option, today and any day of the week. No need to wait for a holiday :^ D

Need something fun for the kids to do? They check out DNA Day (it celebrates the first publication of the papers regarding the structure of DNA) at https://www.genome.gov/10506367/national-dna-day/. (YES a woman named Rosalind Franklin was part of the history-making project)

National DNA Day is a unique day when students, teachers and the public can learn more about genetics and genomics! The day commemorates the completion of the Human Genome Project in April 2003, and the discovery of DNA's double helix in 1953.Subscribe to our newsletter!

Fire SAFETY! Be Sensible about Passover Preparations.

B'SD

 14 Nisan, 5776

It's that time of year again, when Jews worldwide have cleansed their hearts and homes of chametz, the stuff that we may not have during Passover.

The leavened foods will be burned before the holiday begins, so I'm sharing safety tips from a rescue organization before you light the first match. (Psst: Bring a bucket of water to extinguish embers before you leave!):

Subject: [BS/RBS list] Erev Pesach Safety Tips from Hatzala Beit Shemesh

Once again, we have reached Biur Chometz time! In previous years, Hatzala Beit Shemesh has been called to burn cases where children and even adults have been burned, in some cases seriously.. Here are some tips to stay safe this Erev Pesach:

*1. DO NOT EVER!!! place lighter fluid or other chemicals on a raging fire. We'll repeat it again: DO NOT EVER!!! place lighter fluid or other chemicals on a raging fire. A number of years ago, a man and his grandson were seriously injured as they walked near a fire, where children were spraying chemicals on the fire. To this day, they are still dealing with the after effects of this terrible tragedy.*

2. Children should NEVER start or be left alone by a fire, without proper adult supervision.

3. Plastics and other non-combustible items should not be thrown in the fire. This can cause breathing difficulties.

4. Never, ever throw an aerosol can or sealed bottle in the fire! The can can explode, sending shrapnel and shards into the crowd - and leaving people with injuries similar to a bomb blast!

Some quick burn tips: If, Chas V'Shalom, someone does get a burn, taking these immediate steps will alleviate some of the pain and time of healing.

 A. If a person's clothes are on fire, roll them on the ground and attempt to extinguish the flames. Have someone immediately call emergency!

 B. Immediately remove whatever clothing is covering the burned area. However: DO NOT PEEL OFF CLOTHING WHICH IS STUCK TO THE SKIN!

 C. Place the burned area under cool, but not cold, water until responders arrive on the scene.

 D. Remove any rings, bracelets, or other tight fitting jewelry or body ornaments, as swelling may occur.

 E. DO NOT put any lotions, salves, or creams on the burn without speaking to a medical professional, such as a doctor. These items can trap in the heat, and create more complications to healing.

*Hatzala Beit Shemesh advises you to call for any burn, even if it seems superficial or a minor burn. 02.999.999.2*

We hope these safety tips keep you and your children safe, so you do not need to call us for a burn!

Wishing everyone a Chag Kosher V'Sameach and a very safe and happy Yom Tov!

You Get to Decide!

B'SD

2 Nisan, 5776

It's a new Jewish month, and two weeks until Passover. This is a time to cleanse our homes of leavened foods and leavened thinking patterns: Things that don't serve us well.

I haven't commented here much in the past week or so because I've been busy dealing with other peoples' crises. Some days I did a bit of triage, deciding who needed my attention most; I ranked the situations as 1st priority, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

Two-way communication was limited at times, due to the other person's unavailability. They were either at a doctor's office, on the way to or from it. Then they were busy procuring medications and/or medical appliances, or unwilling to converse due to pain or exhaustion.

It was difficult to serve anyone's needs as they sabotaged their own time and efforts.

I am struck by the paradox that some of these individuals impose on themselves.

Some of the people interacting with me during their journeys through a health problem assure me of one thing: They will never go vegan, vegetarian or macrobiotic because it's time-consuming to eat, clean, buy, store and prepare fresh produce.

They tend not to focus on the evidence that these diets minimize or end some health problems.

I've calculated the time that being a wholesome food eater and preparer would take, and presented the whole food critics with the fact that they spend more time on the couch, in bed, commuting to or from medical professionals, or writhing in pain, than it would take to handle being a vegan, vegetarian or macrobiotic eater.

The issue is not the time-consuming tasks at hand. The issue is the change in habits and thinking patterns involved.

Change can seem clumsy, slow, task-oriented, and therefore unappealing.

The question to ask yourself, then, "Is it worth deteriorating easily instead of healing with more work than I'm used to? Is it better for me to apologize when I don't mean it, just so I don't have to get all messy from cleaning and cooking so many vegetables? Am I really doing better my way (ow!) or could it be possible that another eating method could help me past some problems?"

The goal of contacting someone like me, or reading

is to cope with your medical issue.

The alternative to coping is the opposite: Falling apart, remaining in pain, wondering "What if...?"

Your call.

Want to make the change and don't know how?

Think of the situation this way: You get to be pro-active, grow in self-respect and just maybe feel and do better.

I can't promise that this diet or the other will cure you or minimize your problems, but I assure you that your self-respect will grow for making the effort to stop eating and drinking stuff that clearly harms you.

Brad Yates is master of putting issues into perspective. Perhaps this video will help you to sort out your thoughts better:

I hope you'll choose wisely.

Clean out your thinking.

Sorry for the delay, I'd expected to have a link for your listening pleasure by now. But it has taken several recording, buffering and bumper music sessions to get things right.

Some days it seems that life is a glitch waiting to happen. It's certainly true of radio life and technology ;^ D

Stay tuned to this blog. I'll eventually have soundbytes to share with you.
