Lifesaving, Emotionally Rewarding, Funny & Helpful from Cover to Cover!

B'SD

12 Tishrei 5770

When my Self-Help Coaching clients or fans of my book ask me how I helped myself to recover from devastating medical problems, and what YOU need to do to cope with your medical situation, I reply:

"I look at what's going right, NOT at what's going wrong with a given situation. I do the same with clients of my Self-Help Coaching services. My brain - and yours - already knows what went kerflooey. No reminders are necessary. By reassessing the situation, we seek out what works as a coping mechanism, then build on that. Capitalizing on and expanding existing skills and insights builds resilience, teaching you how to be strong and how to expand strengths you already have."

Sounds kind of dull, hmmm? The dancing, traveling, gardening, laughing, sports, hobbies

and strength-building I do and advocate sure aren't.

Want to read a fun book that teaches you all that and never gets tired of repeating the lesson?

AND can save you lots of money with the Global Resources section in the back?

Prevent Drive-Thru Mastectomies and Other Medical Horrors. Here's How!

B'SD

I won't be blogging tomorrow, which is Yom Kipur, a solemn day on the Jewish calendar and
filled with promise for a better future. In that spirit of holiness (prayer, repentance and charitable behavior), let's see what we can do to better the future.

There are LOTS of things a person can do to improve their own life and someone else's.

You can read a book that makes you feel better, no matter what medical problem you or a loved is facing.

It even informs you of Global Resources for reducing your medical expenses, facilitating progress in your medical care, improving your medical transportation options, and lots more.

Reduce a sick person's emotional and other pain with Doctor-recommended

It definitely addresses spiritual as well as practical matters. You don't have to be Jewish to love this book. Look at the right-hand margin to read what a Methodist lay-minister says about the manuscript!

Perhaps you don't need to read it, but someone you know does. Send the digital version to their monitor. Find out the person's correct E-mail address and BUY IT TODAY!

Don't just wish an ill person "Shana Tova" (Hebrew for "May it be a GOOD New Year). Make it happen!

3 Steps to Alleviating Emotional Pain

B'SD

7 Tishrei 5770

Readers, I'm aware of some very sad people facing extremely difficult times and situations. The Jewish High Holiday and pending Winter Holiday seasons seem to highlight the conflict with expectations for feeling happiness versus facing gut-punching adversity.

Read on to alleviate your emotional pain in 3 steps, with a reprint of an essay I did at a long-ago blog (the URL is now inactive): Name the Feeling, Converse about it and ZIP Your Lips. This is only a starting point to a more pleasant outcome:

Some of my blog and book readers plus my Self-Help Coaching clients ask me for a quick explanation of my coping mechanisms. I can answer academically, but the true, better answer comes with your personal experience at coping. A person growing in coping competence needs to know, in their gut, what it feels like to fail to cope and what it feels like to succeed at coping. And they need to admit those feelings to themselves and to critically important others in their life.

Name your feeling (including the ugly, embarrassing ones) or the feeling of the distressed person speaking with you. That makes it more “real.” Now you can deal with it.

Converse about the feeling(s) with the caring person(s) involved in your life. Seek sensible strategies for managing the situation before you and/or the emotions popping up with that situation. Your increasing Self-Awareness can clue you in to your gut reactions (your completely honest initial response to anything at all). Go with your gut! If the decision you’ve made feels right, your tummy will feel calm and spread calmness throughout your body. If the decision is NOT good for you, you’ll feel the trouble. Cancel THAT decision!

When you’re dialoguing about conflicting, mysterious emotions, don’t insult yourself or anyone else by remarking “That’s not true!” or “No, you don’t know what you’re talking about (see my book’s opening remarks for a superb example about that problem).” It’s a brutal response and the victim of the insult will probably stop sharing honest thoughts with you, lie to you, and suffer more because the conversation died at birth. React with Respect (genuine respect). That keeps the dialogue going (plus the relationship!) and the solution soon to follow.

Zip your lips. The human brain needs an editor. Not all thoughts deserve to be said aloud. Plan your remarks. Learn to be silent as you consider your next sentence. See above paragraph ;^ )

Your relationships will improve and sweeten as everyone around you learns that you embrace them with honesty and acceptance. Some folks will need more time than others to become comfortable with the new you. Give them the time they need.

Emotional Competencies (Daniel Goleman model)
Self Awareness: Being able to read your own emotions and to let your gut reactions guide your decision making.

Self Management: controlling your impulses no matter the problem before you
Social Awareness: reacting to other people's emotions with respect (and NOT telling them that their thoughts or feelings are irrelevant) so that they grow in self-respect, and benefiting from social networks

Minimize the High Cost of Medical Care with an E-Book Doctors Recommend

B'SD

4 Tishrei 5770

The New York Times Health Blog features a story I understand all too well:

I saw such nightmares shaping up and become reality when I supervised medical records in various medical institutions years ago. The expensive realities destroyed family relationships as funds dried up, patience ended, medical conditions worsened and tears flowed without end.

Human suffering reached greater dimensions despite ever-new legislation to end or to limit the problems of caring for aging parents in an age of skyrocketing medical costs.

One troubling aspect of caring for aged parents is "Empty Well Syndrome," often suffered by daughters-in-law forced to deal with less involved spouses and their rollercoasting emotions, the children they're supposed to be raising, and competing demands from increasingly frail parents and/or in-laws. It leaves those women emotionally and physically drained.

No end appears to be in sight. Unless you look at the problem in a vastly different way, as I did.

I took readers outside the information maze.
I gave them can-do coping strategies
and cost-cutting information

I even teach how to repair and avoid

MOVE!

B'SD

27 Elul 5769

My book & blog beg you to keep moving to the best of your ability. Here's some evidence that the oxygen-burning aerobic exercise improves your thinking skills:

There's more evidence that exercise can prevent and minimize illness. Arrange for someone willing to help you if you're bedbound or in some sort of appliance. I've helped wheelchair users and people wearing leg or arm braces to dance rhythmically, and with HUGE smiles across their faces.

When I was bed-bound following life-saving surgery, I wore wrist and ankle cuffs to which I gradually added weights (in specially made pockets) over time. They're manufactured for karate enthusisasts who want to build muscle fast. Here's why I wore the getup:

Standing on my toes, moving up and down on my feet at the physical therapist's direction, left me breathless. Then she convinced me to perform daily leg and arm-lifting routines until I regained strength, graceful movement and the ability to walk unassisted.

Quarter pound weights wore me out in the early days (yes I cried). I now pump 20 pounds on my arms and legs as I walk and dance through daily maintenance exercise regimens (now I laugh or sigh with deep satisfaction).

There are more solutions to be found when you focus on finding them.

Whittle Your Waistline. Here's How.

B'SD

21 Elul 5769

Here's a scary headline from The Baltimore Sun newspaper:

The basic problem here is that lots of folks are too lazy to exercise, though simple walks to the store and around the block can do wonders for waistlines.

The other part of the problem is denying reality, including the need to eat nutritious food rather than "feel good" food that usually holds mega calories. Mall muffins come to mind. Burger bars and huge cups of colorful, hi-calorie drinks can hijack your health, too.

Want to avoid a Stroke? Heart Attack? Diabetes? Blood Pressure and Breathing problems? Other diseases too scary to think of?

Have Quality of Life Despite Your Medical Problems! 3 Simple Steps.

B'SD

18 Elul 5769

Dear Readers,

Four years ago, my writing career and personal life crashed the day I woke up completely, unexpectedly blind.

I fainted in the emergency room after learning of a BENIGN brain tumor that had been killing me for 18 months.

Then I helped doctors to save my endangered life in a way that would astonish the medical team for years to come.

Unable to walk on my own, facing the risk that my heart could stop beating without warning, I took the slim chance that dangerous surgery could save me by envisioning a
healthy, productive future.

That surgey was an obvious success.

I walked out of the hospital on my own power. And despite medical expectations, I then began to see. Better and better.

I wrote a highly acclaimed book about my unprecedented recovery:

The prescription on my eyewear fell 12 times in 3 years.

My eyecare team is made of teaching professors. They're
astounded at the unexpected progress.

Though these prestigious medical practitioners had predicted that I'd be blind for life despite life-saving surgery, exams prove that I see better at each visit. Some doctors believe the day will come
when I won't have any need for glasses or vision therapy.

Orthopedic specialists have examined me closely. They learned that my bones and muscles are in the condition of a woman
HALF my age.

They wondered why I could be in excellent physical and emotional shape, despite my traumatic medical history. Some of these specialists joined mental health practitioners in reading my book

Then the social work staff added my book to the hospital's Patient Information Center.

Now other mental health and medical practitioners read and recommend that book PLUS its newly-released updated edition.

The result: people worldwide are learning what I did to remain alive, well-adjusted, and to thrive against BIG odds.

They're mimicing my actions. You can, too.

Find out how you can add to/improve YOUR quality of life, with physical and emotional coping skills, despite the medical situation you're in.
