Move Your Muscles More Often!

B'SD

25 Elul, 5778

If you haven't heard the news by now, 1.4 BILLION of you need to move your muscles more often:

Even if you are in a wheelchair, using a cane or walker, there are health-enhancing movements that you can do. Ask a physical or occupational therapist to you some, and keep doing those that appeal to you. Once in a while, and more often than that, you can do exercises that you don't especially like, just because they're good for you.

Here's a look at how exercise can improve your appearance and mood, too:

An excellent article by Yocheved Golani!
And it even has some quotes from me!
Such a blessing!!!

A Tip for Travelers, PC Users and Anyone Sitting Down

B'SD

3 Adar 5773

I'm busy running around to prepare for the fun-filled PURIM Holiday (it happens in 1.5 weeks from today!)

But some days I'm busy stretching to relieve my back from the stress of being at the PC too long.

I tend to exercise at specific times of the day to minimize the problem and to prevent the pounds from collecting all over otherwise sedentary me.

But what if you're normal, like me, and you slack off the exercise routine sometimes? OW, your back can end up sore.

Here's a tip about how to prevent backaches and strains, at Help for the Deskbound (that includes people traveling and stuck in their seats too long).

Let me know if this idea helps you if you're in a wheelchair.

The new Jewish year is progressing and WOW some of us can party hearty! Here are some fast, affordable Perk-Me-Ups that I shared on Facebook a little while ago:

Apple Cider Vinegar makes a great body cleanser! Add ¼ cup in a full tub, then soak away yuk (GREAT after inner body cleanses!) that exits from pores of your skin.

Suddenly ITCHY eyes? Mix a drop of apple cider vinegar in a handful of water. Rinse eyes clean. Do this a few days & they'll sparkle!

Don't bring lots of apple cider vinegar to the eyes. OW!

Here's What Happened While I was Away from Your Monitor...

B'SD

1 Av 5770

Sorry for my recent absence, readers. A PC hijack/virus load on my PC knocked me out of cyberspace for a while. I have some catching up to do. I hope to begin posting health-oriented updates later this week. Meanwhile, I offer the health-promoting suggestion below.

Since many of us sit down for much of our lives, I offer this cardio-beneficial tip with despairing dieters and anyone else living sedentary lives: Walk UP the stairs instead of using escalators or elevators (but not in safety-challenged shopping malls). Place only the first half of each foot on every step, letting your heel hang in the air. The aerobic "push" you invest to keep moving skyward burns calories. This can be quite a relief to cramped legs. It also fends off DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) after long flights, sitting at your PC for hours at a time, and too much TV. It's good for your heart, thighs, and sense of success.

People in wheelchairs, on bedrest or simply refraining from over-exertion can ask their medical team about helpful calorie-burning and muscle-building exercises that you can do while seated. Occupational and physical therapists probably have wonderful can-do ideas for you.

To your optimal health,

Exercise Slows Aging?!

B'SD

15 Kislev 5770

Stop looking in the mirror for signs of aging and deepen those smiling eye crinkles if you want multiple ways to look better! Today's Medical News from Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association is that
Exercise Might Slow Aging!

This isn't just for runners. Evidence points to the benefits of any regular exercise. Swimming, walking, sports, tennis, even lively games of "catch" etc.

Hmmm, you can read about simple ways to get more exercise even if you're experiencing poor health. I know just the book!

MOVE!

B'SD

27 Elul 5769

My book & blog beg you to keep moving to the best of your ability. Here's some evidence that the oxygen-burning aerobic exercise improves your thinking skills:

There's more evidence that exercise can prevent and minimize illness. Arrange for someone willing to help you if you're bedbound or in some sort of appliance. I've helped wheelchair users and people wearing leg or arm braces to dance rhythmically, and with HUGE smiles across their faces.

When I was bed-bound following life-saving surgery, I wore wrist and ankle cuffs to which I gradually added weights (in specially made pockets) over time. They're manufactured for karate enthusisasts who want to build muscle fast. Here's why I wore the getup:

Standing on my toes, moving up and down on my feet at the physical therapist's direction, left me breathless. Then she convinced me to perform daily leg and arm-lifting routines until I regained strength, graceful movement and the ability to walk unassisted.

Quarter pound weights wore me out in the early days (yes I cried). I now pump 20 pounds on my arms and legs as I walk and dance through daily maintenance exercise regimens (now I laugh or sigh with deep satisfaction).

There are more solutions to be found when you focus on finding them.

Sept. 22 UPDATE: JHU medical professionals insist:
MILD EXERCISE WHILE IN THE ICU

Think of me clapping in time to the beat for you. Or cheering you on during a run.
