Cancer Causes, Dumb Diets, Rude Doctors, and...

B'SD

8 Shvat, 5779

There's plenty of good news in the medical world, and some of it is because increasing numbers of doctors admit that their recommended diets don't work.

Studies are being reconsidered, redesigned, and reclassified so that medical professionals can help people to lose weight easily and sensibly. Increasing attention is being paid to those of us who do not struggle with weight control, and why.

Those updated healthcare professionals can help people to prevent becoming overweight in the first place.

For those of us in the natural healing world, weight control is a matter of understanding specific principles. Here's a starter kit for thinking as we do:

Food is a significant part of the problem - the WRONG food, that is. It can affect fertility, weight, energy levels, health, mood, and more.

I know one naturopath invited to many baby namings because she advises infertility clients to stop ingesting dairy foods. They're full of Mama Animal's hormones, designed to fatten up her children. They create havoc with human hormones. Add in the synthetic hormones from hygiene products that I've warned you about at this blog, and infertility plus obesity easily become "OMIGAWD why am I fat and/or infertile?" issues.

Keep thinking with me.

People complain that they can't keep their weight down as they swallow more lo-cal ice cream, lo-fat cottage and reduced-calories sliced cheese, etc. THEY EAT THEIR OWN PROBLEM, GUARANTEEING THAT IT WILL CONTINUE UNTIL THEY STOP SWALLOWING DAIRY "FOODS" DESIGNED FOR ANIMALS, NOT FOR HUMANS.

Weight control is not simply a matter
of calorie restrictions.

If you eat dairy foods you eat
hormonal instructions
to make your body fat.

It's also important to support thyroid health when your energy levels fall and your weight rises. Add iodine-rich seaweed to your menus.

Sushi is made with nori leaves. Enjoy your weight-management meal.

Kombu is a seaweed sold in flakes and as leaves. Add them to your lentil dishes.

Arame, wakame and other sea leaves make lovely additions to a meal. I decorate steaming hot sweet potato with strands of arame, The pretty orange-green color combination is eye candy. The flavor of the dish is mouth candy that's nutritious for inner and outer health.

There's far more to the natural weight-control life. I only offered a glimpse into it with the thoughts above.

Okay, on to the next topic for today: WHEN DOCTORS BLAME THEIR PATIENTS FOR PROBLEMS THAT THEY DIDN'T CAUSE!

The problem is close to my heart: a good friend was diagnosed with Smoker's Lung. She's never touched a cigarette in her life and neither has her husband. Air and other pollution gave her the disease.

The article below will inform you of other possibilities, and about rude medical professionals who need to be guided into good behavior techniques. Click on...

What Do Smoking, Accidents at Home, Obesity and Mental Health Issues Have in Common?

B'SD

23 Iyar 5769

What Do Smoking,
Accidents at Home,
Obesity, and Mental Health Issues
Have in Common?

You might be surprised to learn the answer: Those four problems pose significant burdens on the health of preschool-age children. Worse, they can badly affect the health of those children life-long!

Want to prevent all that suffering? Great! Here's what to do:

Mom and Dad, stop smoking before the onset of pregnancy. Get medical help if necessary and dedicate yourselves to stopping the habit forever.

Adopt good nutrition practices. Need snacks around the house? Fill the candy dish - better yet a BIG bowl - with nuts, fruits, sliced vegetables, and other high-nutrition/low calorie foods. Fill glasses with genuine fruit juices or water, and skip sugar-filled no-nutrition sodas. Spend the money you'll save from dentist and doctor bills you won't need on something the whole family can enjoy.

Ask health professionals how to make your home as accident-proof as possible.

Study the topic of good mental health practices. Ask questions of respected mental health professionals. Make a hobby of being happy. Be well-behaved even when you feel nasty, unhappy or bored.

And be sure to read this press release from the National Institutes of Heath:

(listen up, medical and mental health professionals read my blog, too ;^ )

Body Size and Your Health

B'SD

11 Av 5768

Big news from today's edition of Archives of Internal Medicine: body size is not necessarily a good indicator of how healthy someone might be. Good living habits help a lot!

Here's what is likely to be confusing news for many of my readers: A new study concluded that overweight and obese adults in the "healthy" category tended to have smaller waists than people with at least two risk factors. But hang on, the news gets cheerier...

What are those risk factors the scientists are concerned about? Elevated blood pressure, cholesterol and other "unspecified" factors.

Those "risk factors" can be tamed, even ended, rather simply. Read on.

Those risk factors were more common for study participants with healthy weight AND with larger waists or potbellies than folks in the other group. Bigger bellies often signal internal fat deposits surrounding abdominal organs. Previous research has shown that to be especially risky.

If you're on the heavier side of the scale but not experiencing high blood pressure or high cholesterol and other "unspecified" risk factors, you're likely to be in better health than your neighbors in different circumstance.

Want to stay Heart Healthy? The study showed that in all weight categories, risk factors for heart problems were generally more common in older people, smokers and inactive people. Among obese people ages 50 to 64, just 20 percent were considered healthy compared with half of younger obese people.

Please. Take the advice I've been offering recently: get outdoors for limited amounts of time, lose some weight (only a pound at a time. Don't make this harder by forcing unrealistic expectations into your diet plan), and move around. Climb stairs instead of using elevators, talk pleasant strolls, do some windowsill gardening if you can't start an outdoors garden, and stop smoking (get professional help if necessary).

Making changes in your health habits takes Commitment, Discipline and Consistency (take that redux of your initials, Centers for Disease Control!). My book can certainly help you with that!

World-famous psychiatrist Dr. A. Twerski tells me that "Addicts and people on chemotherapy need [him] less" after he gives them copies of my book. "They simply do better after reading It's My Crisis! And I'll Cry if I Need To: A Life Book that Helps You to Dry Your Tears and to Cope with a Medical Challenge!" he says.

Slim = Smart in More Ways Than One

22 Iyar 5768

The "Battle of The Bulge(s)" has more at stake that you suspected, according to the May 2008 edition of Obesity Reviews.

The International Association for the Study of Obesity quotes some researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who indicate that "Obesity may increase adults' risk for having dementia."

The announcement was based on 20 years' worth of published obesity and dementia prospective follow-up studies. They show a consistent relationship between the two diseases. I capitalized major points in the following quotes:

"Our analysis of the data shows a CLEAR ASSOCIATION BETWEEN OBESITY AND an INCREASED RISK FOR DEMENTIA and several clinical subtypes of the disease," said Youfa Wang, MD, PhD, senior author of the study and associate professor with the Bloomberg School's Center for Human Nutrition. "Subjects with a healthy body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference saw a decreased risk for dementia than their counterparts with an elevated BMI or waist circumference."

Wang adds, "PREVENTING OR TREATING OBESITY at a younger age COULD PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN REDUCING THE NUMBER OF DEMENTIA PATIENTS AND those with other COMMONLY ASSOCIATED ILLNESSES SUCH AS ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE by up to 20 percent in the United States."

In other medical news, it's a proven fact that women with excess weight in their midsections are more likely to die of heart disease or cancer than thinner women. See Abdominal Fat for details.

SAVE YOUR LIVES WITH A SPOON AND A FORK.
The good news, ladies and gentlemen, is that heart disease statistics are going down with increased international interest in exercise and healthful lifestyles. Seek out a diet plan you can handle and lighten up your load. It'll make eveyone you love happier, including YOU!

Trust me, your self-esteem (and your intelligence) will rise with your reduced weight.

Sing a Song of Spiritual and Physical Fitness

9 Tevet 5768

As I recover from my broken elbow I am left with time and occasion to reflect upon my life and its meaning.

My acknowledged purpose on this planet is to demonstrate how a mortal human can face utter disaster, work through it, and raise the bar on personal performance. One of the prayers I recite daily is Perek Shira, the song of Creation. It refers to the majesty of the universe and the Creator. GOD (HaShem in Hebrew) is beyond human comprehension. Though we cannot fathom GOD's Master Plan, we can sense its innate purity of power and purpose.

Here is a video that people of any religiion can appreciate. It is by my friend Rabbi Lazer Brody:

PHYSICAL EDUCATION, ACTIVE PLAY HELP TEENS MAINTAIN NORMAL WEIGHT AS ADULTS

Adolescents who participate in physical education at school are more likely to maintain a normal weight as young adults, according to a study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

For each weekday of physical education at school the odds of being an overweight adult decreased by 5 percent. Participation in all five days of physical education decreased the odds of being an overweight adult by 28 percent. The study is published in the January 2008 edition of the journal Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.

These findings underscore the important role that school-based and extracurricular physical activities play in reducing the likelihood of becoming an overweight adult," said Robert Wm. Blum, MD, MPH, PhD, the study's senior author. "While physical education was not a good weight-loss mechanism over time, it appears to have a positive impact in helping teenagers maintain a healthy weight into young adulthood," added Blum, the Bloomberg School's William H. Gates Sr. Professor and Chair in Population and Reproductive Health.

… The likelihood of being an overweight adult was most reduced among teens who participated in wheel-related extracurricular activities such as rollerblading, biking or skate-boarding more than 4 times per week.

… The American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend physical education at all grade levels. Studies show that…only 6 percent of junior high schools and 5 percent of senior high schools offer daily physical education...

"Sixteen percent of adolescents in the United States are overweight or obese and 85 percent of obese teens will become obese adults. School-based physical education could be a low-cost strategy and a long-lasting solution to adult obesity," said Blum.

November is American Diabetes Month

17 Cheshvan 5768

Rates of people with diabetes are climbing worldwide, especially in Western societies. Here are some basic facts you need to know. Change your habits and protect your health (under medical supervision) accordingly.

TYPE 1 DIABETES
A combination of genetic and environmental factors, this is an autoimmune disease. A person's own immune cells destroy the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, a horn-shaped organ near the stomach.

TYPE 2 DIABETES
A combination of genetic and environmental factors, this is the most common form of diabetes. Obesity, insufficient physical activity and/or a family history of the disease are risk factors. Once rare in children, Type 2 diabetes rates are growing. This can lead to complications such as heart disease.

The American Diabetes Association wants you to know that diabetes and heart disease are linked. People with diabetes are at high risk for a heart attack or a ...

My connections in the medical world are dynamic. They can be quite helpful, as readers of my blog indicate on previous posts. One of my contacts is also a source of medical practioner and medical treatment information for the MAYO CLINIC. If you need to learn about some new form of effective therapy, or about the world's best expert on some specific medical issue, I can seek out the information for you very quickly.

UPDATE: Fast Facts - About 154,000 people below age 20 have diabetes in the United States.

- According to data reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2006, one in 523 people under age 20 has diabetes. About 79 percent of them are aged 10 to 19 years.

- Types 1 and 2 Diabetes rates are soaring in the USA and elsewhere. Lack of sufficient exercise and too much snack foods are part of the blame. The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) offers tip sheets and an online quiz for teens, to help them to manage their disease and to reduce their risks for complications.

NDEP's new "Tips for Teens with Diabetes" encourages teenagers to manage their disease for a long, healthy life. Topics such as "What is Diabetes?, Be Active, Make Healthy Food Choices, Stay at a Healthy Weight, and Dealing with the Ups and Downs of Diabetes" are among many other tips.

NDEP’s tip sheet for addressing teens at risk for Type 2 diabetes is called "Lower Your Risk for Type 2 Diabetes."

An interactive online quiz for teens with diabetes (based on information found in the tip sheets) uses a question-and-answer format, with direct links to the new series of tip sheets. All of it is available at no charge from the NDEP. These resources support children with diabetes and their families to ensure their health and well-being now and into adulthoodThe new tools also support the 2007 World Diabetes Day campaign theme "Diabetes in Children and Adolescents." It’s for raising awareness of the rising rates for type 1 and type 2 diabetes among youngsters around the world.
