Are there only 3 Options for Taking Advantage of the ICD10 Delay? Or 4?

B'SD

17 Nisan, 5774

Within the medical industry, there's an enduring debate about the merits and upside of the i10 delay. This one is entitled 3 ways providers can take advantage of the ICD-10 delay.

Dontcha just LUV this quote:

"From a hospital perspective, enough already," Linda Reed, vice president and chief information officer at Morristown, N.J.-based Atlantic Health, told FierceHealthIT. "We've spent the money, done the work and started all the training. From a physician practice perspective, I'm not sure giving another year would make any difference in readiness. The extension from 2013 to 2014 didn't."

Those words made me think of two very different scenarios and the motivations behind them:

  1) Doomsday preppers who shuddered as the clock struck midnight on the last day of 1999...

  2) The purpose of procrastination, and its inevitable result...

Neither scenario relates to productive results.

People tend to find out that they can cope with reality once they decide to deal with it. That tends to lead to better and better consequences.

Read the rest of the 3 Options story,

then ask your legislators what they're doing to redress the ICD10 implementation delay.

By the way, I've identified a fourth option for taking advantage of the ICD10 delay: Learning from the mistake.

Why the Western World is in Surprisingly Poor Health

B'SD

25 Adar 1, 5774

WHEW! Medical Coding classes have filled my daily schedule and free time with lots of work. I study and take exams around the clock. Graduation in May is coming up, so I am uber-focused on completing my hard work and doing well.

I'm completing a 2-year college course in under one year. LOTS of work!

What I've learned along the way is that the rates of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and mental health problems have risen with the passing years.

A rather shocking number of people in the Western world are in fragile health. They need to slow down, to enjoy pleasant past times, and to fill up on wholesome foods, not the pre-packaged, highly adulterated stuff sold in stores. That junk is sickening the people who eat it, including children who don't know any better.

Trust the medical world: There is no proof that you need preservatives, color - smell - taste enhancers, pesticides, synthetic hormones or other poisons in your diet. Ever.

I learned the hard way, when I went from blind to sighted by dumping commercially prepared "food" from my menu.

Each year I prepare whole home made foods in the baskets of treats I share with friends on Purim. The happy holiday happens in about 3 weeks. Here's a peek at the highly detailed story: Purim Animated.

How Would YOU Solve an Identity Problem for Patients Who Can't Speak?

B'SD

6 Tevet 5771

A very sad issue has affected many people in Philadelphia:
After Months of Searching, Family Finds Woman in Philly Hospital.

The lack of personal effects that identify a person too ill to speak for themselves is a problem that can be avoided. Medical ID bracelets and necklaces are reasonable solutions. They can be worn 24/7, even in the bath or shower.

I wonder, though, if you have other good ideas for preventing the impossibility of identifying someone in a similar medical crisis.

Embedded computer chips, something along the lines of what pet dogs receive in their ears do not appeal to many people afraid of them for some reason or another. Tattoos are not a solution for people who avoid them for health, esthetic or religious reasons.

What solutions can you think of? Let me know and please share your name when you post comments below.

Are Your Eating Habits Destroying Your Health? End that Inclusion Confusion Now!

B'SD

9 Kisev 5770

Gosh, the advertising world tries to convince you that

means Good For You! You happily repaint your fortified-milk mustache, gobble vitamins, and snack on so-called foods filled with Trans Fats. Then you wonder why you're gaining weight and feeling awful.

You just don't know WHAT to include in your menu anymore. Confusion fills your brain. You just don't feel ready to run, let alone crawl, to the mall for holiday gifts.

Want to end that Inclusion Confusion?

I'm willing to help you to
think this through.

The truth is, dairy can cause joint pain due to the chemicals (including artificial hormones that probably affect your fertility and monthly cycles) in commercial cow's milk. Lo-cal snacks lack nutrition and WOW are they high in health-destroying salt stripped of its native minerals, and loaded with synthetic chemicals plus other dangerous stuff.

Wanna clear your head?

I understand.

Skip the coffee (especially dangerous decaf processed with one of the most effective cancer-causers known). Pour yourself a tall glass of fresh juice without additives. Sip slowly and read on to end your inclusion confusion.

You do NOT need
hormone-filled dairy products in your diet. Your biological balance can be thrown off by the signals it gets from chemicals that are bad for human bodies.

As for those vitamins you're sure are good for you, read
Reuters News Report Warns the World: Multivitamins can Endanger Health!

And those convenient food-on-the-go snacks? They haven't been good for you since long before
the BBC filed this Trans-Fats report .

What's left to eat when you're in a hurry? LOTS!

Grab an avocado and scoop out delicious nutrition-dense lutein so you can see better, vitamins and minerals for being better, and a mere 50 calories or so. Add it to a modest bowl of pasta or a heaping helping of vegetables. Either choice is easy to pack for workdays or school lunches and mmm, are they filling!

You'll feel and look better
for the regularly made effort.

For cold weather meals that make you feel warm & cuddled all over, fill a thermos with home made soup you simmered to perfection. If you don't know how to make soup, use this time-honored recipe, based on an instructive legend:

Stone Soup

Centuries ago, a starving beggar knocked on a poor villager's door, begging for food. The villager sadly pointed to the scraps lying about the primitive kitchen.

"Hmm," said the starving beggar. "Let's make a fire with those twigs and bits of wood lying about. Then we'll place your kettle on the flames. I'll toss in water I can draw from the well and add my Magic Stone. Let's see what happens!"

The villager had nothing better to offer, or so he thought. The fire burned merrily in minutes and the kettle heated with bubbling water.

The starving beggar plopped a pebble with great ceremony into the boiling liquid and said "Here comes the magic!" A few minutes later the villager remarked that there still was nothing to eat, unless the visitor cared to swallow a hot stone!

"Say we toss in those carrot tops you want to toss out, some bits of onion stuck to the cutting board, and perhaps those potato peels lying over there?"

The villager happily dumped what he'd thought was garbage into the brew. The beggar dropped a tiny turnip, parsnip and young squash growing in the garden into the boiling water.

"Er, may I add those meat bones you were saving for the dog?" the beggar pleaded. The villager shrugged as the bones dropped to the bottom of the brew.

A delicious aroma filled the air. Soon the two people dined on delicious, nutritious Magical Stone Soup.

You can make your own Stone Soup!

Fill the pot with root vegetables after scrubbing the skins clean under running water (they hold lots of nourishment so keep them ON the veggies not in the garbage!) and let those unpeeled veggies simmer. Toss in some spices, a few aromatic herbs. Garnish your filled soup bowl with home-grown sprouts you learned to make right here, yesterday. Have your Magical Stone Soup with some whole-grain bread and savor the health-promoting flavor.

Kitchen success is a matter of user-friendly chemistry. See Science Daily's Chemistry of Cooking for affordable, body-building ideas.

Bon apetit!

Slim = Smart in More Ways Than One

22 Iyar 5768

The "Battle of The Bulge(s)" has more at stake that you suspected, according to the May 2008 edition of Obesity Reviews.

The International Association for the Study of Obesity quotes some researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who indicate that "Obesity may increase adults' risk for having dementia."

The announcement was based on 20 years' worth of published obesity and dementia prospective follow-up studies. They show a consistent relationship between the two diseases. I capitalized major points in the following quotes:

"Our analysis of the data shows a CLEAR ASSOCIATION BETWEEN OBESITY AND an INCREASED RISK FOR DEMENTIA and several clinical subtypes of the disease," said Youfa Wang, MD, PhD, senior author of the study and associate professor with the Bloomberg School's Center for Human Nutrition. "Subjects with a healthy body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference saw a decreased risk for dementia than their counterparts with an elevated BMI or waist circumference."

Wang adds, "PREVENTING OR TREATING OBESITY at a younger age COULD PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN REDUCING THE NUMBER OF DEMENTIA PATIENTS AND those with other COMMONLY ASSOCIATED ILLNESSES SUCH AS ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE by up to 20 percent in the United States."

In other medical news, it's a proven fact that women with excess weight in their midsections are more likely to die of heart disease or cancer than thinner women. See Abdominal Fat for details.

SAVE YOUR LIVES WITH A SPOON AND A FORK.
The good news, ladies and gentlemen, is that heart disease statistics are going down with increased international interest in exercise and healthful lifestyles. Seek out a diet plan you can handle and lighten up your load. It'll make eveyone you love happier, including YOU!

Trust me, your self-esteem (and your intelligence) will rise with your reduced weight.

Heart Bypass Surgery Does NOT Make You Stupid

16 Iyar 5768

Sorry for the delay in today's post. Some apparently Chinese viruses knocked out my PC. The blog, my PC and I are now back online.

According to the May Annals of Neurology, the good medical news in the world this week is that HEART BYPASS SURGERY DOES NOT CAUSE A DECLINE IN MENTAL SKILLS.

Though many patients seem to complain that their language, cognitive (knowing) and memory skills go downhill after heart bypass procedures, a new study by Johns Hopkins researchers suggests that these problems aren't caused by the surgery itself or by the pump used to replace heart function during surgery.

Here's the linchpin of the study, excerpted from a JHU press release: "... Johns Hopkins researcher Guy McKhann explains that previous studies hadn't compared patients who had bypass surgery to those who had other treatments instead. As such, it's been unknown whether mental decline is a consequence of surgery using the bypass pump, heart troubles, part of the normal aging process, or another cause altogether."

The study involved patients who'd had heart bypass and those who had not. It compared cognitive function of patients who received cardiac bypass surgery with that of patients who received other treatments for coronary artery disease, including pharmaceuticals and stents.

Researchers found that both groups experienced an almost identical decline in cognitive function. The results suggest that THE DISEASE ITSELF, and not any particular treatment, IS THE CAUSE FOR COGNITIVE DECLINE.

McKhann says that the finding "may help the stigma that prevents some doctors from recommending bypass surgery. We don't think fear of mental changes should be a factor in deciding what kinds of treatments you have for your heart."

Real Men Don't Need Dairy Foods. NOBODY Does!

11 Iyar 5768

It takes A LOT to make me post a Friday update. I like long weekends ;^ )

But this update shouldn't wait. MEN, this one's for you.

ACCORDING TO this Departments of Nutrition and Epidemiology Harvard University School of Public Heath study, dairy intake can cause PROSTATE CANCER in men.

Skip the Milk Mustache.

Many people unwittingly endanger their health with dairy products. Lots of adults believe that dairy foods are nutritional for human bodies. "They're not," according to Dr. Neal Barnard of
The Physician's Committe for Responsible Medicine. He often speaks of clinical evidence showing that human consumption of dairy foods can lead to diabetes and other health problems.

Cow milk is good for young cows and goat milk is great for kids with four feet, tails and shaggy coats. But the stuff's NOT for humans.

Organic or not, dairy items do not belong in human bodies past infancy. The ideal form of dairy nutrition for human infants comes only from Mommy. Second best (if Mommy can't provide) is a baby-compatible formula.

See this
information-packed site to learn about actual medical evidence that DAIRY DOES YOU NO GOOD. IT HARMS YOU.

Men, lose the belly fat. Get your 6-pak abs in shape without dangerous dairy foods. Ladies, learn from the guys. Trim your form and improve your overall health by banning dairy foods from your menu.

And get a load of this insight about how DAIRY FOODS CAN DAMAGE your BONES AND THE REST OF YOUR BODY:
OSTEOPOROSIS.

November is American Diabetes Month

17 Cheshvan 5768

Rates of people with diabetes are climbing worldwide, especially in Western societies. Here are some basic facts you need to know. Change your habits and protect your health (under medical supervision) accordingly.

TYPE 1 DIABETES
A combination of genetic and environmental factors, this is an autoimmune disease. A person's own immune cells destroy the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, a horn-shaped organ near the stomach.

TYPE 2 DIABETES
A combination of genetic and environmental factors, this is the most common form of diabetes. Obesity, insufficient physical activity and/or a family history of the disease are risk factors. Once rare in children, Type 2 diabetes rates are growing. This can lead to complications such as heart disease.

The American Diabetes Association wants you to know that diabetes and heart disease are linked. People with diabetes are at high risk for a heart attack or a ...

My connections in the medical world are dynamic. They can be quite helpful, as readers of my blog indicate on previous posts. One of my contacts is also a source of medical practioner and medical treatment information for the MAYO CLINIC. If you need to learn about some new form of effective therapy, or about the world's best expert on some specific medical issue, I can seek out the information for you very quickly.

UPDATE: Fast Facts - About 154,000 people below age 20 have diabetes in the United States.

- According to data reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2006, one in 523 people under age 20 has diabetes. About 79 percent of them are aged 10 to 19 years.

- Types 1 and 2 Diabetes rates are soaring in the USA and elsewhere. Lack of sufficient exercise and too much snack foods are part of the blame. The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) offers tip sheets and an online quiz for teens, to help them to manage their disease and to reduce their risks for complications.

NDEP's new "Tips for Teens with Diabetes" encourages teenagers to manage their disease for a long, healthy life. Topics such as "What is Diabetes?, Be Active, Make Healthy Food Choices, Stay at a Healthy Weight, and Dealing with the Ups and Downs of Diabetes" are among many other tips.

NDEP’s tip sheet for addressing teens at risk for Type 2 diabetes is called "Lower Your Risk for Type 2 Diabetes."

An interactive online quiz for teens with diabetes (based on information found in the tip sheets) uses a question-and-answer format, with direct links to the new series of tip sheets. All of it is available at no charge from the NDEP. These resources support children with diabetes and their families to ensure their health and well-being now and into adulthoodThe new tools also support the 2007 World Diabetes Day campaign theme "Diabetes in Children and Adolescents." It’s for raising awareness of the rising rates for type 1 and type 2 diabetes among youngsters around the world.
