Eat Food, not FAKERY or Fat

B'SD

10 Shvat, 5773

The sweet, colorful new year for trees called Tu B'Shvat (an acronym for the 15th of Hebrew month Shvat) happens this coming weekend. See Tu B'Shvat Shabbat.

It's a wonderful time to improve your health with pure, nutritious foods that support your health. Pesticides, additives and other fakery undermine human health.

Eating to Save Your Life

B'SD

7 Tishrei, 5773

Oof, it's mid-season for the Jewish High Holidays. Other calendars are gearing up for a different season of foodfests. Many of us are wondering what to do so we can eat, enjoy the food and not feel deprived while other people overeat.

Here's my first suggestion for getting your meals under control all year long: Read this article by Dr, Dean Ornish who has helped people around the world to reverse their heart disease problems into non-problems. The article is entitled Eating for Health, Not Weight (aka The Optimal Diet).

My second suggestion for getting your waistline and dining efforts to build you up instead of tearing you down is to read the motivational comments in

Here's one excerpt you might enjoy:

If you're the sort of person who hasn't yet succeeded
at organizing your life, I offer sweet solace with simple advice:

DIETERS Beware of a New Weight-loss Drug!!!!!!!!!!

B'SD

30 Shvat 5772

The news just hit my monitor minutes ago: Weight-loss drug Qnexa now has FDA approval. But doctors are alarmed about possible heart problems! See MedPage Today, in the upper left corner (click that bothersome subscription notice off your screen).

When you want a safe, proven to be effective way to lose weight, limit your intake of food and increase your level of activity. The idea is to burn more calories than you swallowed. If you have trouble limiting what and how much you eat, read EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge (YES - dieting is covered in there, too) and scroll around this blog for excellent weight-loss tips.

And do increase the amount of water you drink. That flushes fat and toxins out of your body.

Want an EZ Shmeezy calorie-burning tip?

As I wait for links to work, while listening to online content or when my PC is booting up, I lift weights! They sit near my desk for that very purpose. No flabby arms for me. Just toned muscle and burned calories, even though I use a computer often in my business day. Try it and feel the fat fading away...

Lose Weight, Live Healthier Lives and LOVE the Food!

B'SD

1 Shvat 5772

Not keeping those "Lose weight" new year's resolutions are you? I suspect that this is not just about willpower. It's about flavor. A meal is something to savor.

You can lose weight, lower your bad cholesterol levels and love the experience. All it takes are some almonds, barley, cinnamon, fruit, garlic, ginger, grape seed oil, oatmeal, olive oil, pistachios, salad fixings, sea salt, walnuts, whole grains and lots of other delicious foods.

Fill your flavorful dreams with whole foods and pure water, teas, juices and other natural fare. It's the packaged, processed gunk coming off the assembly lines that are ruining your waistline - and possibly lowering your timeline. They're loaded with fat, salt and synthetic chemicals that human bodies don't need. The goo just messes up your metabolism and much more.

Watch your health turn into something better, and more affordable, day by day. Don't believe me? I used to joke that a candy bar in each hand made a balanced meal. Then I turned a deadly diagnosis into a medical recovery miracle by improving my diet.

Quick Weight-Loss Tips that Work!

B'SD

26 Tishrei 5772

Wahoo! I only gained 400 grams over the high-calorie High Holiday season. To celebrate my self-control (though I still want to taste the kugels I pushed away), I'll introduce you to some time-honored truisms of weight loss and weight control.

Losing weight is rarely quick (unless you have the flu) but a slow, steady strategy to keep your calories in check pays off long-term benefits.

Here are some quick tips to peel off extra pounds:

Eat your carbs with fiber (fruits and vegetables help your body to lose the goo that otherwise fills up your fat cells).

Add quinoa to your meals. Red quinoa is delicious. So is white! The high-protein treat minimizes hunger pains and nourishes you well.

Drink at minimum one cup of water about 15 minutes before meals, and 2-3 liters of water per day.

Add 2 tablespoons of flaxseed to your hot or cold cereals and plain yogurts once daily. That'll take more goo out of your system and leave you healthier than before.

Drink green tea (it can lower your cholesterol, too).

Skip the fried foods, including bourekas, chips, falafels (sorrrrrrryyyyy) and salty buttered popcorn (eat plain popcorn instead).

Add more vegetables and fruits to your menu, and forget the hi-cal salad dressings, mayonnaise and more. Simple lemon juice, garlic, vinegar and olive oil make yummy salad toppings.

Food is for enhancing life, not ruining it!

Definitely dump the colas and white bread. Here’s why.

Preparing NOT to Pack on the Pounds 1-2-3!

B'SD

2 Adar 1, 5771

Ever wish you had more time to cope with life? Good news: YOU DO!

Notice the unusual date on today's blogpost: The Jewish month is literally Adar 1 as this is a Jewish leap year with an Adar 2 coming up next month!

Adar is a time of special joy when Persia's (and much of the known world's) Jews were spared mass annihilation by a crooked government minister (sounds familiar, huh?) who'd been guilty of headline-worthy crimes.

Jews around the world celebrate the miracle with a holiday called
Purim. It calls for costumes, the retelling of the Purim story (the whole megilla!) and much silliness (plus a serious sense of marvel at the miraculous end of Iraq's Israel-aimed Scud Missile War).

At any rate, lots of hi-calorie foods are shared in packaged gifts, then served at celebratory meals later in the Purim-fest day. But diners usually regret having packed on the calories despite the good-natured fun.

Here's a HEADS UP:

YOU (and everyone else in the world) have time - an extra month - to prepare better menus for Purim and any occasion. Start today, and search out delicious recipes which maximize nutrition, not calorie counts. Purchase necessary ingredients now so you can cook with ease long before the March 19/20 2011 party.

Avoid the nuisance of a boring, guilt-tripping

and health problems easy to avoid.

Need more heath-promoting ideas before the fun begins? Read EMPOWER Yourself to (prevent unwanted pounds and to) Cope with a Medical Challenge. Buy it at Booklocker http://www.booklocker.com/books/4244.html

Here's What Happened While I was Away from Your Monitor...

B'SD

1 Av 5770

Sorry for my recent absence, readers. A PC hijack/virus load on my PC knocked me out of cyberspace for a while. I have some catching up to do. I hope to begin posting health-oriented updates later this week. Meanwhile, I offer the health-promoting suggestion below.

Since many of us sit down for much of our lives, I offer this cardio-beneficial tip with despairing dieters and anyone else living sedentary lives: Walk UP the stairs instead of using escalators or elevators (but not in safety-challenged shopping malls). Place only the first half of each foot on every step, letting your heel hang in the air. The aerobic "push" you invest to keep moving skyward burns calories. This can be quite a relief to cramped legs. It also fends off DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) after long flights, sitting at your PC for hours at a time, and too much TV. It's good for your heart, thighs, and sense of success.

People in wheelchairs, on bedrest or simply refraining from over-exertion can ask their medical team about helpful calorie-burning and muscle-building exercises that you can do while seated. Occupational and physical therapists probably have wonderful can-do ideas for you.

To your optimal health,

Is Your TV Making You Diabetic? Putting You at Risk for High Blood Pressure? Or...

B'SD

28 Sivan 5770

My Facebook page recently filled with comments about how often western medical experts and neutral researchers are proving me correct for advising you to go organic, and at minimum to avoid foods and other substances that can seriously damage your health.

Today I'm sharing a sense of
"Told Ya So"
at this blog.

MedPage Today's Cole Petrochko cautions us that You Cannot Eat What Your TV Tells You

If you insist on filling up on this too often (c'mon, I know it's delicious and OK to have once in a while), or breakfasting on this everyday

Then you're facing a lifetime
of this on your dinnerplate,
before and after parties
and all through your vacations
and hospitalizations:

Give yourself time to consider the consequences. When you're ready for sensible, can-do strategies for changing your dining habits and improving other aspects of your health situation, read EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge.

Mediterranean Diets SAVE LIVES!

B'SD

21 Adar 5770

Once again the ideas and suggestions made in prove worthwhile.

You really owe it to yourself,
or an ailing loved one,

You can even buy a copy to prevent illness when you follow the guidelines in the book. Why?

Dr. Iris Shai & Dr. Dan Schwarzfuchs
found that a long-term weight loss
program using a healthy diet strategy
- such as a Mediterranean food plan -
can reverse carotid atherosclerosis
(arterial clogging).

The findings were published in
the current issue of Circulation,
the leading medical journal of
the American Heart Association.

That Mediterranean diet is only one of many health-promoting ideas and suggestions in the manuscript. I wrote it before the conclusions of Shai & Schwarzfuchs became public knowledge, packing it with healthy thoughts and strategies.

Read a relevant article at How to Keep to Arteries Young: Live in Israel, Eat 'Med Style'Living the sunny Mediterranean lifestyle in Israel is a healthier way to keep one's arteries limber for longer, according to a new study

How can a Glass of Pure Water Protect YOUR Health and Fertility?

B'SD

21 Tishrei 5770

Let's continue a line of thought from yesterday's blogpost and my Self-Help Coaching skills. Cancer and infertility are messing up many lives around the globe. Stricken people are dumbfounded that they could suffer such problems. "After all," they reason, "I took care of myself. Ate well, drank lots of water, just like those natural health counselors advise. Local and national governments have standards for preventing disease in the food and water sytems. I know that what I ate and drank was clean, bug- and germ-free.
I even switched from BPA-filled plastic water bottles to aluminum stuff. How could this happen to me???"

The answer is as startling as can be: The government-supervised foods and water you ingested might have been loaded with health-endangering chemicals. Yes, they prevented mold, bug infestations and sewage from seeping into your food and water supply. But how that was arranged seems to be the problem causing rising cancer and infertility rates.

How do I know?

Read this educational news item: Dangerous BPA Leaks from Alumium Bottles.

Then read:
EPA Re-evaluating Hormone-disrupting Pesticide Atrazine in Water Supplies.

URGENT UPDATE: Scientists at Tufts Studying BPA as a Possible Cause of Breast Cancer

Somebody poisoned the well.
And the water bottle.

Replace your chemically-laden plastic kitchenware over time as a protective measure. Use health-promoting wood, cast iron, glass, ceramic and porcelain items instead. Glass bottles or genuine glass drinking cups won't fill you with BPA and who-knows-what that might be disclosed in the future. Ceramic mugs are good, too - if they're lead-free. Fill your kitchen cupboards with cutlery and cookware made of natural elements.

And get a water filter!

Need water when you're on the go? Clean out empty glass wine and grape juice bottles and use them in a shoulder-strap water carrier as I do.

Want to improve more of your dietary habits, to increase the chances of better health and/or fertility? Consider reducing the
fried and barbecued foods on your menu. They're known to cause problems, too (that's OLD News! ).

There's still a world of scrumptious, body-building menus to enjoy. They can protect and improve your health.

Read this book to know how changing my diet gave doctors pause when they realized I went from suddenly blind to sighted (in full color!) within months of changing my dining habits. My bones, muscles and overall health now rival that of a woman HALF my age. Medical experts are studying my medical miracles and reading the book, too!

The text can soothe you as you learn how to cope with your diagnoses in clear-headed fashion. Jokes and funny remarks from famous people appear throughout the text. They'll make you laugh and smile when you least expect it. The Global Resources section in the back lets you know about how to get help to conceive despite complicated fertility problems, how to get discounts on expensive medication and medical appliances, and much more - no matter the diagnosis you have.

There's a reason that world-famous psychiatrist
Dr. Judith Guedalia calls EMPOWER Yourself
"Lifesaving, emotionally rewarding, funny & helpful."

Here's a bonus: the manuscript also tells you about foods that fight pain! You can feel MUCH better after reading this book ;^ )

Body Size and Your Health

B'SD

11 Av 5768

Big news from today's edition of Archives of Internal Medicine: body size is not necessarily a good indicator of how healthy someone might be. Good living habits help a lot!

Here's what is likely to be confusing news for many of my readers: A new study concluded that overweight and obese adults in the "healthy" category tended to have smaller waists than people with at least two risk factors. But hang on, the news gets cheerier...

What are those risk factors the scientists are concerned about? Elevated blood pressure, cholesterol and other "unspecified" factors.

Those "risk factors" can be tamed, even ended, rather simply. Read on.

Those risk factors were more common for study participants with healthy weight AND with larger waists or potbellies than folks in the other group. Bigger bellies often signal internal fat deposits surrounding abdominal organs. Previous research has shown that to be especially risky.

If you're on the heavier side of the scale but not experiencing high blood pressure or high cholesterol and other "unspecified" risk factors, you're likely to be in better health than your neighbors in different circumstance.

Want to stay Heart Healthy? The study showed that in all weight categories, risk factors for heart problems were generally more common in older people, smokers and inactive people. Among obese people ages 50 to 64, just 20 percent were considered healthy compared with half of younger obese people.

Please. Take the advice I've been offering recently: get outdoors for limited amounts of time, lose some weight (only a pound at a time. Don't make this harder by forcing unrealistic expectations into your diet plan), and move around. Climb stairs instead of using elevators, talk pleasant strolls, do some windowsill gardening if you can't start an outdoors garden, and stop smoking (get professional help if necessary).

Making changes in your health habits takes Commitment, Discipline and Consistency (take that redux of your initials, Centers for Disease Control!). My book can certainly help you with that!

World-famous psychiatrist Dr. A. Twerski tells me that "Addicts and people on chemotherapy need [him] less" after he gives them copies of my book. "They simply do better after reading It's My Crisis! And I'll Cry if I Need To: A Life Book that Helps You to Dry Your Tears and to Cope with a Medical Challenge!" he says.
