DIETERS Beware of a New Weight-loss Drug!!!!!!!!!!

B'SD

30 Shvat 5772

The news just hit my monitor minutes ago: Weight-loss drug Qnexa now has FDA approval. But doctors are alarmed about possible heart problems! See MedPage Today, in the upper left corner (click that bothersome subscription notice off your screen).

When you want a safe, proven to be effective way to lose weight, limit your intake of food and increase your level of activity. The idea is to burn more calories than you swallowed. If you have trouble limiting what and how much you eat, read EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge (YES - dieting is covered in there, too) and scroll around this blog for excellent weight-loss tips.

And do increase the amount of water you drink. That flushes fat and toxins out of your body.

Want an EZ Shmeezy calorie-burning tip?

As I wait for links to work, while listening to online content or when my PC is booting up, I lift weights! They sit near my desk for that very purpose. No flabby arms for me. Just toned muscle and burned calories, even though I use a computer often in my business day. Try it and feel the fat fading away...

"GOTCHA! " Healthcare?!?

B'SD

3 Tamuz 5771

OY. The Obama administration announced its plan to send "mystery shoppers" to visit medical practices so they can figure out how accessible primary care is. It sounds as inefficient, irrelevant and irreverant as "Gotcha journalism" which preys on decent people minding their own business and not harming yours.
Then it frames them as being incompetent creeps.

I'm convnced that the best way to obtain better health care is by pleasantly introducing yourself to the medical staff and making an appointment to discuss actual needs. Surreptitious behavior raises more questions about the liars posing as patients than answers about medical compentence. I pity Americans with medical needs who depend on their president for solutions.

In other news, I spent part of my time volunteering at a hospital, doing what I can to help people of all ages to smile despite pain and fear as they face blood transfusions, chemotherapy, radiation and sheer misery. Today I had an interesting morning, playing Rat-a-Tat-Cat and Blokus in Arabic (I won 2 out of 3 rounds per game), plus handing out magazines and videos for different ages and speakers of different languages.

A Russian-speaking child was so weak from his chemotherapy that I painted pictures for him. All of us laughed to see patients from India whupping each other at Bananagrams in English. Such fun. What a day on the emotional spectrum.

Tell me, what do you do to cope with the pain and suffering of medical problems? I keep meeting people who quote specific passages in my book, to let me know what they do to cope with medical life.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Gmail Motion can Help People with Physical Limitations?

B'SD 29 Adar 2, 5771

This isn't as elegant an old-fashioned stationer's paper but "Gmail Motion" can be far more effective if you behave sensibly with the technology.

Gmail recently launched a new technology called Gmail Motion '>"Gmail Motion" (click on the blue bar that says "Try Gmail Motion") that enables someone to do many E-mail tasks with body motions and a web camera.

After you download "
Gmail Motion" you can fill out full sentences with a simple gesture e.g., to fill in the sentence "Have a nice day" simply wave your hand in front of the web camera.

It's possible to train the software to learn new gestures by using the "Configure" button inside the software. If you use specific sentences on a regular basis, you can define a new gesture to fill them out automatically for you.

Download the list of sample gestures at
http://mail.google.com/mail/help/images/motion/motion_printable_guide.pdf

Get information about the technology at
http://mail.google.com/mail/help/motion.html

REMEMBER: E-mail is never private. Thousands of eyeballs can see your messages whether or not you want them to. Behave sensibly online: do not divulge secrets or sensitive information.

Incremental Improvements: Adding Up One Victory at a Time.

14 Tamuz 5768

I recently shared some insights with a woman whose husband is recovering from major surgery. She'd been upset at his non-stop television watching and bored behavior. My remarks are true for this couple and for anyone trying to cope with a medical challenge or crisis. I hope you'll benefit from them:

" ...it's not simply your husband's thoughts that are adjusting to his post-operative reality, it's his body's readjustment period, too.

"He's been zapped of a lot of physical strength and he's facing the emotional shock of it all. Remember: men don't identify well with being helpless, ill, or dependent (women are mentally prepared for it cuz that's how we recover from giving birth). Meanwhile, his muscles and nerves are learning to work together again after being heavily drugged. The surgery itself was a trauma to his body, let alone the tumor's influence on his body functions. What a mix to master!

"What you need to do is to think of incremental improvements over time. It goes something like this: one day he walks to the end of the lawn. A few days later he reaches the end of the block. One week he endures walks to the end of the block 2 or 3 times that same week. A month later he's increasing his speed, sense of balance and his smile. He gets the mail and the paper, maybe runs errands to a corner grocery. He might gradually increase the time spent reading a newspaper or book. Eventually he starts doing the things he always did, at a pace that accommodates his present strengths. Play his favorite music. Maybe he'll dance with you or sing to favorite tunes, stuff like that.

"Be sure to have nutritious food on hand for snacks and meals: fresh fruits and veggies, lots of fresh (not sugared) juices, water, some of his favorite meals to perk up his appetite and sense of joy. Help him to build himself back up from the inside out.

"PRAISE HIM for every improvement he makes. One day at a time, each improvement as it develops. Keep reassessing your husband's progress over the long term, not moment-by-moment. Keep a progress journal if that appeals to you. It can fill gaps in your memory as you cope with competing details. That can be sooooo reassuring."

To summarize the above, here's what you need to focus on in someone recovering from serious medical treatment:

Incremental Improvements: Adding Up One Victory at a Time.

Okay, readers, there you have it. Medical setbacks cause us to behave less lively than we once were.

We go into the future one accomplishment at a time, celebrating individual victories. Those celebrations offset/cancel out the unhappiness from previous setbacks. And the victories add up over time into MANY victories.

My book includes humorous stories and jokes from famous people throughout time.
They overcame personal tragedies and pain, too.

Cure Your Crankiness!

13 Tamuz 5768

Some days, coping with an illness or medical problem just seems to be too much to ask for. You want to SCREAM! You want to holler words that would make your mother blush.

And you want to throw a pity party that could fill the headlines of gossip columns.

Ready to eat that yummy bowl of ice cream or bag of french fries that will cause pain you never knew existed, despite that loss of your fat-processing spleen or gall bladder?

You gonna skip the tiring, boring exercises that let you move your arthritic or somehow sore back, legs, arms and neck more easily? Uh-oh! You know what physical therapists say: "Motion is Lotion!"

Want to let your doctor hear some really AWFUL vocabulary and a threatening tone of voice from your throat and telephone?

TIME OUT!!!

Don't let your blood pressure percolate out of your head.

Read my book to soothe your psyche & soul.

It's My Crisis! And I'll Cry if I Need To: A Life Book that Helps You to Dry Your Tears and to Cope with a Medical Challenge

teaches you how to sort out your emotions, to deal with conflicting issues and to regain your sense of humor in one colorful paperback workbook.

Share it with someone you love and trust, or read it by yourself. Cure your crankiness. And for extra protection against your next temper tantrum, keep a copy near the refrigerator or phone.

You and everyone around you will be better off for it. Promise ;^ )

All it Took was a Phone Call...

22 Adar Alef 5768

Today I took an early-morning call from abroad that lasted an hour. An Israeli woman in another country had heard of my survival/recovery from surgery to remove my formerly life-threatening though benign brain tumor (called a Meningioma), and she'd heard about my book for coping with medical crises.

She's in serious need of surgery similar to mine. She was terrified of her situation (a very normal reaction) and wanted reassurance as well as information from me, a fellow Hebrew-speaker.

I used my Self-Help Coaching techniques with my caller, responding to her concerns one by one and offering some insights about how to take control of her medical life. We reached a point when she giggled at her situation. She understood the context in which she can cope with her medical crisis and its challenges.

Our conversation ended after she'd mentioned "feeling better now" several times.

We'll be speaking with each other again, most likely. She wants to benefit from my sense of humor and from my familiarity with finessing the medical world and its baffling mazes.

It all comes down to finding the courage to accept treatment.

Fear is quite a monster,
a very real complication to medical crises.

Overcome your fears, step by step. Read my book and/or access my Self-Help Coaching services.

Oh - I want to add a BIG "Thank You" to Sandy Scherlis, who directed that caller to me. Sandy and I are fellow listmates of that very informative and helpful
Meningioma Mommas (and Poppas) site.
