Making the World Accessible from Hollywood to Here!

B'SD

6 Av, 5772

Whew, I've been busy under increasingly hot and humid weather. I've filmed a few episodes of the Refua Radio show, interviewing some practitioners of highly successful alternative healing techniques. But I pulled the shows that have all concerned looking exhausted and soaked with perspiration. We'll probably shoot those segments again so that we come out looking less worn out.

This week I'm preparing a feature story about improving on accessibility issues for children with physical or other limitations. Here's an item I found stuck in my research notes. Feel a grin spread across your face when you read

Hollywood Pros Teach
Adults With Disabilities
Moviemaking
.

My feature story is full of solutions for children of all ages and their parents. I have more information for adults. That will possibly appear in a future article.

If you or someone you know need insights on how to travel with physical or cognitive limitations, be sure to read pages 59 and 98 of EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge (Buy it from Booklocker). They address solutions to travel issues for people with disabilities.

Tips for securing employment despite a disability are in there, too.

FYI on Sukot, Wheelchair Accessibility in Barcelona and Easy Reading!

B'SD

14 Tishrei 5772

YAY, tonight is the start of the weeklong Sukot holiday, when Jews thank The One Above for getting us through the desert after slavery in Egypt. Miracle after miracle is celebrated while we dine and sleep in specially prepared huts/booths. Read this Sukot FYI  & this one, From Fasting to Feasting.

Back to day-to-day concerns, consider what it's like for a person in a wheelchair to move about in a foreign location (let alone at home!). Alan Broadbent participates on a LinkedIn group for people with disabilities. He posted information about wheelchair-accessible Barcelona. I asked him if I may share the item on this blog. Alan graciously replied, "Please feel free to share information with anyone via your blog, twitter, facebook etc."

FREE! Barcelona, A Wheelchair Users Guide now available for pdf download
Barcelona, A Wheelchair Users Guide is a 'warts & guide to Barcelona covering such issues as travelling from the airport into the City, eating out, money, touring, hotel accommodation and much more. This 10 page guide is available for free at the moment in pdf format. For people using screen readers I have the guide available using the DaisyPipeline software so hopefully a download should work fairly easily, ditto a version is available for download that can be printed in braille, both these last options are experimental on my part at the moment. When the EPUB ebook version goes live next month the others will no longer be available free and those versions will be sold at a nominal fee to cover admin time. Email me at wtm@disabledaccessibletravel.com for a copy.

Read up on the etiquette tips for interaction with people who use wheelchairs in a very affordable book! They'll appreciate you for that! Buy the E-book or print edition of EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge so you and everyone else can...

Gmail Motion can Help People with Physical Limitations?

B'SD 29 Adar 2, 5771

This isn't as elegant an old-fashioned stationer's paper but "Gmail Motion" can be far more effective if you behave sensibly with the technology.

Gmail recently launched a new technology called Gmail Motion '>"Gmail Motion" (click on the blue bar that says "Try Gmail Motion") that enables someone to do many E-mail tasks with body motions and a web camera.

After you download "
Gmail Motion" you can fill out full sentences with a simple gesture e.g., to fill in the sentence "Have a nice day" simply wave your hand in front of the web camera.

It's possible to train the software to learn new gestures by using the "Configure" button inside the software. If you use specific sentences on a regular basis, you can define a new gesture to fill them out automatically for you.

Download the list of sample gestures at
http://mail.google.com/mail/help/images/motion/motion_printable_guide.pdf

Get information about the technology at
http://mail.google.com/mail/help/motion.html

REMEMBER: E-mail is never private. Thousands of eyeballs can see your messages whether or not you want them to. Behave sensibly online: do not divulge secrets or sensitive information.

Wheelchair Etiquette 101

B'SD

15 Tevet 5771

Sorry for late-in-the-day blogposts that seem to be few and far between. GOOGLE and/or my PC seem to be having some problems, making my efforts to update this blog tedious and time-consuming. My PC technician and I are seeking solutions to the problem. Meanwhile, here's the skinny on Wheelchair Etiquette 101:

People who use wheelchairs don't do that for your convenience. Think of it this way: the wheelchair is similar to an arm, leg or any other necessary body part for the person sitting in one.

Please know that a wheelchair is literally the extension of a person's body. It's not a toy nor your handy-dandy catch-all. You don't smear fingerprints on someone's glasses, do you? Try out their hearing aids? Of course not. That's crossing personal boundaries. When you fail to heed the personal boundaires that wheelchairs represent, you're sort of like that bull up above, making people uncomfortable.

Please visit the

to get perspective from a wheelchair user. You'll know how to be better behaved from now on. Pretty empowering, huh?
