B'SD 30 Nisan, 5777 Today the Jewish world celebrates the start of the month Iyar. The Hebrew letters of the word are an acronym for the phrase "I am GOD your Healer." We humans can make our utmost efforts to cope and/or to heal, but success depends on having GOD's help with them. Pray, do nice things for yourself and others, and practice feeling calm. That can only improve your chances of success. This Wall Street Journal article is a classic. It might help you in your coping plus healing efforts.

B'SD 4 Kislev, 5773 It's been a helluva week since last Sunday's update. I spent the Sabbath praying for the safety of my people and listening to Shidur Shaket, silent radio, which broadcasts warnings of incoming missiles from Israel's enemies (too many to count!). The defensive Israeli response to the incessant rocket-fire was long in coming, not the offense that mainstream media has made it out to be. Anyone wishing to recite tehilim, psalms, to ask for HaShem's (GOD's) mercy on the Jewish people can focus on chapters 20, 83, 121, 130, and 142. Read them to see why they're appropriate to the occasion. Any pro-Israel prayers, straight from the heart, are welcome. Jews have been under attack since the days of Abraham (the world's first monotheist) and Isaac, when Ishmael tried to murder his half-brother. Judaism advocates compassion, the polar opposite of what Hamas, the PA and the Koran stand for.
Political concessions are worthless as you see below.
Israel shrinks and the attacks to obliterate the Holy Land and her Jews continue.
A political, moral, and theological crisis - you'd cry too, if it happened to you. Use your tissues and handkerchiefs with my blessings borne of experience. GOD gives you Permission to Weep. And you can say that to any critics after explaining that "It's MY Crisis! And I'll Cry if I Need To." Meanwhile, ill people around the world need to know how to lower their medical costs, how to reduce their overall stress and how to to receive the care they need as they improve their moods and organization skills. Solutions for all that fill the E-book or print edition of EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge. Buy a copy for yourself or a loved one today! Face Your Medical Problems with Dignity. B'SD 26 Tishrei, 5773 One of the activities of that face-to-face Facebook group members meeting the other day was to pray for ill people to heal emotionally, physically and spiritually. The impetus for that was the stunning news that a heroic lady and her husband have been faced once more with her battle to defeat cancer. You can read their touching, motivational blog Crossing Jordan (the Yarden in Hebrew) and join the people in Stella's army praying for her recovery. Stella's Hebrew name is Tzureeya Kokhevet bat Sara (Tzureeya Star daughter of Sara. Sorry, Tzureeya doesn't translate into easy English).
I'm trying to get a copy of
to her via a mutual friend, as it lists worldwide organizations willing to pay for part or all of Stella's (or anyone's) medical and medication costs. If you want to help us to accomplish the mission of mercy, contact me via giveretgolani@gmail.com. You can see a few of us holding on to our prayer booklets in this photo by fellow blogger Batya Medad
(my booklet is in my hand but was cropped out of the photo to fit this blogpost). Joy is part of life. A little guy let me dance with him to make a mood of happiness to improve anyone's outlook and life. GOD willing we'll dance again to celebrate Stella's healthy victory.

B'SD 28 Av, 5772 You just learned that you might have a medical problem. Your life might even be on the line. Or maybe you're facing some other issue that feels like the wrecking ball of your life. There are times I comfort someone deeply unhappy with the way their life is going: abusive relatives or acquaintances (they're definitely NOT friends!), choices that backfired, scary news of some sort. Heartache, physical pain, emotional upheaval, mental or physical workouts and expenses of different kinds can be part of the picture. They sap energy and sometimes hope. That's normal. Are you condemning yourself for pulling back, for withdrawing from some activities and situations? Are you loading up on feel-good calories that will bloat you? Have you done something else you hate to realize? The good news is that you're aware of better choices you can make. Let's look at some of your options. "The road to success is almost always under construction," I comment to troubled people. "Sometimes you just need time and rest to recover from the strain of it all. Then you can pick up where you left off. You might even have thought through some innovative ideas to help you along. That’s why your life is a work in progress. You work at it, rest, pick up where you left off and watch the progress." The nifty thing about that recovery period is that it lets you charge up your emotional and physical batteries. That enables you to be exceptional, to rise above the turmoil. How about just coping with the adversity in a way that restores your self-respect? Okay, here are three terrific tips for doing just that:
1. Make a list of your inner negative beliefs
on the left side of some paper
2. List your survival instincts in the middle column,
pairing them with the problems you're facing
3. On the right margin, briefly state the positive and negative thoughts or reactions you have to specific problems
Discuss all that with someone who totally respects you and can provide you with insight for how to have a better future. Face your unfolding future with empowering statements of "I will..." such as "I will control my eating behaviors," "I will plan a realistic budget," "I will find out how to behave in better ways with X, Y or Z problems." You can start crossing off the negativity notes as you make progress with your unfolding future. You're realizing your better self, now. Enjoy the process and take notes on what improves in your life!

A journalist as well as an author, my schedule is filled with several complicated projects. One of them was not contracted for. It was a recent conversation with friends over a dinner together.
Those friends informed me of people suffering medical problems and all the emotional and financial costs that tend to go with them. We sighed together. I then named the pages of
that held solutions for the specified problems. As promised, I met with one of the affected individuals to offer some words of comfort and direction. Several days and book sales later, a grateful parent thanked me for having written the book: "Yocheved, now I feel like I'm catching up after I felt like life had left me and my family behind."
I'm still crying over the privilege of having been able to help yet another person struggling with medical, mental health or disability issues.
The first part of the book lets you know how to stay organized despite blizzards of paperwork, piles of business cards for doctors and treatment sites, pressing appointment schedules and the need to pack for hospital stays. It even includes tips for keeping or recovering your sense of humor despite all the pressure.
The second part of the book, the Global Resources section, clues you in to worldwide organizations willing to pay part of all of your medical costs and then some!
The Passover seder on Friday night was lovely and meaningful. The focus on freedom from any sort of slavery was uplifting. And I realized at the table that one form of slavery is the hyper-focus on medical/mental health issues that pretty much takes over the lives of some people. That can be prevented, though you're wondering "How?"
Let's look at that sudden or chronic condition
dominating your life, or your patient's, now.
There are far too many different topics that doctors and therapists are “supposed” to discuss with their patients. The expectation is not realistic. She or he lacks the time, energy and focus to hold your hand and to guide you through an increasingly large, complicated maze of medical options. Think about it: doctors are busy treating or operating on people, and documenting facts about their patients. They also attend meetings, continuing education classes to learn of newer drugs, newer procedures and newer laws. Plus, they wade through blizzards of licensure paperwork let alone medical records they must study, sign and understand.
Lives - and the quality of those lives - are on the line
Then the doctors and therapists are supposed to tend to their private lives without letting the stress of their work adversely affect their relationships. Being a medical or mental health professional is a time-consuming, gargantuan task! That presents serious doctor-patient relationship and quality of care issues to finesse on both sides of the bedrail or doctor's desk.
Patients are struggling to find out what they need to know, facing feelings of shame, despair, fear, rising and fallling hope. Just name the emotional complication - let alone the confusing, frightening and EXPENSIVE medical problems dominating their lives!
Social workers and case managers are available for explaining medical facts and options to patients, their friends and/or loved ones. Check out their reputations for competence before divulging your personal details and investing your hopes on people who might or might not be able to assist you or your loved one. You might need to work with someone else.

A reporter looking for "Mood boosting Strategies" to round out her article on the topic just received this mesage from me:
"... medical and mental health professionals recommend the mood-boosting messages in It's MY Crisis! And I'll Cry If I Need To: EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge. World renown psychiatrist Dr. A. Twerski gives copies to people on chemo and overcoming addictions. He tells me they call him less as the book is so helpful to them. Methodist minister Carl Phillips found the spiritual content 'Right on!' Rabbis approve of it too. Readers around the world are buying the book and feeling happier for it."
I've even shared those mood boosters in the book with friends in the south of Israel, where terrorists have been bombarding civilians with rockets since March 9th. The tips are indeed helping my acquaintances to cope with their fears and then some.
