More HELP for SICKLE CELL Anemics

14 Sivan 5768

(sorry for the late-in-the-day post. my present schedule is causing some delays in my usual daily routine)

I've posted about Sickle Cell Anemia treatments before, including
the path to a possible cure for the disease. Today's post is about Hydroxea, a drug some doctors are reluctant to prescribe simply because they lack sufficient information about it.

"We know that many people with sickle cell disease aren't being offered this drug, which is the only one we have to treat this disease," says Sophie Lanzkron, M.D., assistant professor of medicine and oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and director of the
Sickle Cell Center for Adults at Johns Hopkins.

There's some interesting research to back up Lanzkron's statement. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, paid for that research. Read about it
HERE and be sure to share the findings with relevant medical professionals.

Find out how to search for and how to contact the medical professional you need when you read my book. It's all about Patient Empowerment.

- By the way, I APPRECIATE your votes for my various blogposts (I installed that starred widget thingy just last week, even though it appears on every page of this year-or-so old blog). Feedback from YOU makes my day! If you don't mind, let me also know why you've bought my book. Sales rose sharply this month and I'm curious to know why it's selling so briskly just now.

Sing a Song of Spiritual and Physical Fitness

9 Tevet 5768

As I recover from my broken elbow I am left with time and occasion to reflect upon my life and its meaning.

My acknowledged purpose on this planet is to demonstrate how a mortal human can face utter disaster, work through it, and raise the bar on personal performance. One of the prayers I recite daily is Perek Shira, the song of Creation. It refers to the majesty of the universe and the Creator. GOD (HaShem in Hebrew) is beyond human comprehension. Though we cannot fathom GOD's Master Plan, we can sense its innate purity of power and purpose.

Here is a video that people of any religiion can appreciate. It is by my friend Rabbi Lazer Brody:

PHYSICAL EDUCATION, ACTIVE PLAY HELP TEENS MAINTAIN NORMAL WEIGHT AS ADULTS

Adolescents who participate in physical education at school are more likely to maintain a normal weight as young adults, according to a study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

For each weekday of physical education at school the odds of being an overweight adult decreased by 5 percent. Participation in all five days of physical education decreased the odds of being an overweight adult by 28 percent. The study is published in the January 2008 edition of the journal Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.

These findings underscore the important role that school-based and extracurricular physical activities play in reducing the likelihood of becoming an overweight adult," said Robert Wm. Blum, MD, MPH, PhD, the study's senior author. "While physical education was not a good weight-loss mechanism over time, it appears to have a positive impact in helping teenagers maintain a healthy weight into young adulthood," added Blum, the Bloomberg School's William H. Gates Sr. Professor and Chair in Population and Reproductive Health.

… The likelihood of being an overweight adult was most reduced among teens who participated in wheel-related extracurricular activities such as rollerblading, biking or skate-boarding more than 4 times per week.

… The American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend physical education at all grade levels. Studies show that…only 6 percent of junior high schools and 5 percent of senior high schools offer daily physical education...

"Sixteen percent of adolescents in the United States are overweight or obese and 85 percent of obese teens will become obese adults. School-based physical education could be a low-cost strategy and a long-lasting solution to adult obesity," said Blum.

Blind People Might Soon “See” Graphs, Diagrams and Other Visual Formats

3 Kislev 5768

This development makes Braille keyboards low-tech!

Researchers from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins, The City College of New York's Grove School of Engineering, Baruch College, CCNY, Northwestern University and the University of Maryland, College Park are making a marvelous invention called "A Dynamic Tactile Interface for Visually Impaired and Blind People."

The DTI tool will likely have three layers:

1. A bottom layer touch screen connected to a computer for audio feedback to communicate the position touched on the screen.

2. The middle layer will have embedded isolated electrodes to address segments of the polymer top layer.

3. The top layer will consist of an electro-active polymer film covered with a thin gold film. Segments of the top layer will be able to extend out from the surface as voltage is applied from the corresponding electrode in the middle layer.

The tactile interface team is utilizing its collective skills to move electrical charges through manmade materials. In brief, the device is being designed to rise slightly and possibly to wiggle in response to electronic signals, allowing the user's fingertips to sense a pattern. If all goes according to plan, sound feedback will steer a user’s fingers along the lines of a graph or a diagram.

As their collective expertise improves, the team plans to enable vision-impaired people to see pictures, too. They’re already bringing people with little or no physical vision to the digital age. It’s all good news for blind individuals and people whose sight has been reduced by accidents, brain tumors, cataracts, congenital deformity, and more.
