Burn the Calories before Eating Anything!

B'SD

20 Kislev, 5779

Hanuka happens in a week, and it's so exciting! A holiday for everyone to respect, it's about stopping bullies in their tracks. There's more to the Hanuka happening, but too much to explain here.

Psych yourself up to improve your muscles with increased strength. I shared some ideas about affordable holiday gifts the other day, and all of them can be used to improve your overall health, let alone your muscular health.

Here's some more information that might benefit you:

Finding the Right Number of 'Reps' When Strength Training
When you first start strength training, almost any weight you lift will bring some results. But also use this time to learn proper form, the American College of Sports Medicine...

Do those repetitions before you dine on anything, and you'll be burning calories before you begin to eat!

Do the exercises daily (until you feel tired!) and you can reset your metabolism to burn calories more than you do now.

Okay, now you  know how to burn off the extra calories that you're likely to swallow during the hectic holiday season. Minimize the overindulgence temptation by eating proper meals before you go to parties. You'll be less hungry when you're feeling full. Sip water instead of sugary drinks overloaded with calories.

You'll be trimmer for the effort. Losing weight is good for lowering blood pressure and other health risks.

Refine Your Inner Silver!

B'SD

27 Kislev, 5777

Need another peek into EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge before you decide to buy it for yourself or someone else? Here you go:

Refining Silver

A group of women met regularly for a Torah/Bible Study class.  While they were studying the book of Malachi, in chapter three, they came across verse three, which says: "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver."

This verse interested the women and they wondered how this statement applied to the character and nature of G-d.  One of the women thought it might be a good idea to find out more about the process of refining silver, and get back to the group at their next meeting.

The next week, the woman called up a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him while at work.  She didn’t mention anything about the reason for her interest, beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver.

As she watched the silversmith work, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up.  He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire, where the flames were the hottest as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about G-d holding each of us in such a hot spot, and then she thought again about the verse that "He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver."  She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit in front of the fire the entire time the silver was being refined.

The man answered yes, that not only did he have to sit there holding the silver but he had to keep his eyes on it the entire time it was in the fire.  If the silver was left even a moment too long in the flame, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment.  Then she asked the silversmith,

"But how do you know when the silver is finely refined?"

He smiled at her and answered, "Oh that's easy – when I see my image in it."

Remove the Wrinkles in Your Gift List: How to Handle the Gift-giving Season

B'SD

26 Kislev, 5776

I've enjoyed the warmth of friendship plus the glow of Hanuka candles at parties for the past two nights. I'm invited to another party this evening, and making one of my own tomorrow night.

I realize that it is Kwanzaa and Christmas season, too, and that many of my readers are wondering about suitable and affordable gifts for friends, family members and work colleagues. I have a list of ideas to offer that could very well meet your needs:

1. Gifts from the heart. Promise to run specific errands or to teach someone a skill you can impart to them. Your investment in time and someone's quality of life is a gift from the heart.

2. Love notes. Leave them around the house or office, praising some behavior, remark or insight in the person you appreciate. A show of appreciation is a gift that lasts forever. All it costs is a bit of time to share your thoughts.

3. Give the person something that they need. If they're ailing or dealing with someone who is sick, they might appreciate a book that they and their loved ones can share to minimize problems and to maximize happiness. Buy a copy of

I hope that the above ideas took the wrinkles right out of your furrowed brow and gift list.

Finding the Light in Life's Challenges

B'SD

25 Kislev, 5776

Today is the first day of Hanuka (the first candle was lit last night). It's sometimes spelled Chanuka, Chanukah or in other ways. But the source of the word is the same: Dedication.

In brief, Chanuka is about being dedicated to the moral ideals given to humanity by The One Above. We Jews have been repeatedly forced out of Israel by many groups of people, or allowed to remain in our country but pressured to  abandon our way of life. That's a morally troubling problem on many levels.

At one point in history, a small group of Jewish men called Maccabees rededicated the holy Jewish Temple that had been defiled by yet another entity struggling to separate Jews from their moral imperatives. Those Maccabean efforts led to the holiday of Hanuka.

and how Jews have responded

throughout our history.

Perhaps you'll find the information
soothing in today's nerve-jangled times.

Mental health is a gift good any time of the year. Help little ones, and older kids, to develop socially upbeat points of view.
