Why Doctors Need to Consult their Patients

B'SD

16 Tevet, 5779

One of the enduringly problematic aspects of medical and mental health care is that clinicians too often fail to heed the patient though WE are experts on what ails us! Medical and mental health professionals tend to dismiss that reality because THEY graduated from medical school, not us (not in every case, anyway).

The problem with that attitude is the condescension shown to and felt by patients.

In the days before health care acts (affordable and unaffordable), some patients considered themselves the clients/bosses of medical and mental health professionals. We knew that we could hire and fire them at will. Insurance brutalities have changed that reality, however. These days, a person needs to be independently wealthy in order to choose only the medical staff members whom they desire on their team. Sometimes we're stuck with snobs in white uniforms, prescriptions pads and stethoscopes in hand.

Thanks to social change initiatives, the overall picture is improving somewhat. The casual mood and almost democratic participation on the Internet has allowed different points of view to be shared, understood, and heeded.

A few examples of that are presented below. As indicated in the EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge book, I suggest that you share pro-patient content with your medical team. Alert the members to some realities that they need to comprehend in order to treat you in more optimal fashion.

“Despite my polite and respectful questioning of my doctors, I never had a treatment plan that addressed all my symptoms.”

The life lessons in the information above
are about the clinician''s need to
LISTEN TO AND HEED THE PATIENT!

We understand our medical issues
with personal experience and insights
that doctors need to know.

There's an entire chapter entitled

Listen to the Person Before You -
a Lesson for Caregivers

It starts on page 42.

Share it with your clinicians, just as the book directs ;^ D

As for people faced with life-altering changes in their health, appearance, and function: I remind myself and my life coaching clients (ill people who need to identify their priorities, then plan to meet their goals) that "This is my new 'normal.' I need to respect it and to work with it, NOT against it."

FUNdraiser! You can Share the Joy!

B'SD

10 Nisan, 5778

Passover aka Pesakh/Pesach begins Friday night. Jews worldwide are praying for our eternal freedom from hatred, violence, spiritual derailment, and other nasty problems so that we can pursue our spiritual destiny without distraction.

Meanwhile, I want to focus on something else, too. Last week I indicated that I'd helped to prepare a fund raising effort. That  happened after I'd advised the woman involved of the healing efforts that she needed to make.

Here's the link to the page, presented by the patient's husband: Restoring Talent Buried by Pain

Here's a look at the healing in progress. You can help it along with a donation to the cause.

Sitting in the beautiful sun for the first time in many months, having walked to this park on my own two feet with very minimal pain, basking in gratitude to Hashem for bringing me to this moment in life, where I feel that I Will Be Able to HEAL. My retreat in Jerusalem at the house of a talented doctor, a Chinese medicine practitioner, is the right thing at the right time. I think I'll heal. I'm beginning to believe it. It's happening.

Please don't ask me to feature YOUR fundraising effort. I have been very involved in this one as a friend of the woman involved. I can vouch for the accuracy of her predicament.

It's been fun to witness Sarah's improving health. May she be blessed for a full, pleasant recovery.

You can share the joy in her recovery with a donation via the Restoring Talent Buried by Pain link.

A Life Lesson for All of Us

B'SD

29 Adar, 5778

Adar is a generally joyous month, but this year it has been challenging to feel light hearted. I have been focused on helping several people in dire medical or mental health straits for weeks. My time, energies and thoughts have been focused on their needs.

An unusual and related event happened this week: A complementary medicine professional reached out to me, due to my respect for the person's work and our mutual acquaintance with a patient (networking matters). We agree on the specific life-saving care that she needs.

This is not a small matter, as you will eventually learn.

With the patient's permission, I have prepared the text for a fund-raising campaign to enable the patient to benefit from a period of 'round-the-clock treatment and observation in this professional's care. The therapy is not simple nor cheap. But it can dramatically improve the patient's quality of life, and it's continuation.

The recommended therapy is not readily available. It must be carefully prepared by someone who knows exactly what they're doing, and with full comprehension of, and compassion for, the patient's needs.

Stand by for the pending announcement when I notify you of the launch for that fund-raising campaign. It will be quite a departure from the usual fare at this blog.

I have never advocated for a specific person or practitioner before. I plan to do so in the foreseeable future. I'm convinced of the life-preserving necessity to do so.

A life lesson for all of us is in the making.
