Vacation Station

B'SD

15 Sivan 5772

I decided to get out in the wider world a bit and took a mini-vacation for a few days. I've seen some pretty flowers, trees and grasses dancing under the breezes in the countryside. Today I watched the waves at lovely Carmel Beach, on my return trip.

Kindhearted people assisted me with my luggage as I traveled on trains, and used staircases. I'm grateful for their gracious generosity of spirit.

I'm simply breathing in the happy memories of the people with whom I interacted, the healing work I've accomplished with people who needed it, and the friendships that have grown stronger with real life interactions.

This blog served as a bit of a Vacation Station as I sought out ideas for innovative content to benefit my readers. I've readied some posts to go "live" in the next few days, by using distant PCs and plain old paper and pen.

Looking forward to your responses to the new content, starting tomorrow,

Have Happier Holidays: Here's How to Report Groping TSA Staff

B'SD

18 Kislev 5771

My E-book holds money-saving information about safe travel for ill people. But I never imagined that I'd need to address the safety and dignity of everyone else as I prepared the manuscript.

Anyone going through US airports faces humiliating defenselessness as strangers feel up your body parts! GOOD GAWD people we go through hoops to prevent perverts from moving into our neighborhoods or preying upon defenseless children and adults! This OUTRAGEOUS Terrorism sanctioned with government laws is beyond reason!

Americans, YOUR tax monies are paying for people to touch you in places you prefer to protect. Worse, the perverted pat-downs of TSA employees are another security problem altogether. TSA staff overlooks dangerous behaviors of terrorists while harassing law-abiding decent people.

This NY Post article is worth reading to save your dignity and to enhance your genuine security

When Smart Apps Aren't

B'SD

15 Elul 5770

Smart Apps (i. e., applications on digital devices such as smart phones and websites that remind you what to do and when) make news and fun feature stories. But I'm going to level with you: I rarely err when I predict future trends. And I predict that Smart Apps will eventually turn you into one wondering human when the power goes out. Possibly into a person who's sicker than necessary.

Today's Technology can
help travelers to cope
with health issues on
the road and even
before you leave.

BUT travelers and
stay-at-homers
need to take PROPER
health precautions.

If you're traveling to
far-flung locales or
stay-cationing in your
own back yard, you
already know of
global fears about
blackouts regarding
excessive power
demands and/or
terrorism.

Total reliance on
electronic devices
isn't wise. A good
back-up plan perhaps,
but not full coverage
of your medical needs.

I advise you to invest in paper and pens or pencils. Markers are nice, too. But be sure to note your medical must-dos on low-tech paper products as a sensible back-up Plan B.

Photocopies of your eyewear, other medical appliances plus medication prescriptions, instructions for your medical behaviors (exercise regimens, nebulizer usage etc.) and other necessities should be part of the notes you make and guard carefully.

When the power goes out, and it will one of these days, you'll be healthier for having protected your non-digital interests long before the new crises affect your neighbors and fellow patients.

UPDATE: On another tact, I'm worried about Facebook Places, a new online resource about medical establishments in local communities. I fear it will backfire as a milestone for healthcare social media. At first blush it seems like an opportunity for information overload, lawsuits regarding defamatory statements, and mass confusion. The pendulum will swing towards low-tech solutions once people realize that the Internet complicates life.

Sept. 15 2010 UPDATE: See what I mean? Chase Bank Website Down Due to Technical Difficulties

Sept. 24 2010 UPDATE: If my predictions above were on-target, rest assured that my book is ahead of the curve. Time and headlines prove me right: Malicious computer worm launched at industrial targets (... designed to cause serious damage in the physical world, security experts are warning).

Oct. 19 2010 UPDATE: Is Facebook Protecting or Endangering Your Privacy?

Have a Safe and Correctly Medicated Vacation

B'SD

19 Av 5768

Two items of interest today:

1. My colleague Star Lawrence had an interesting post on her health-oriented blog yesterday. See Traveling With Medication for some intelligent advice. And note the ideas I posted on the COMMENTS section:

I recommend making photocopies of
each prescription BEFORE you take them to pharmacists.

The doctor's contact info can be scribbled in along the margin (NOT for the customs clerk's benefit. That's for YOUR benefit)
or on the back of each photocopy.

Do the same thing for your eyewear (glasses, contact lenses, prescription sunglasses).

2. Today's news sites and news shows are full of dire warnings about Diabetes and Arsenic. I want to clarify some facts for you: You need to distinguish between INorganic Arsenic (dangerous) and ORGANIC Arsenic (safe).

Contaminated drinking water is only one source of INorganic Arsenic. Foods such as flour and rice can also hold small quantities of INorganic arsenic, especially when they're grown or cooked in areas with arsenic-loaded soil or water.

What can you SAFELY dine on? Seafood, including sushi and other leafy foods from the ocean such as Arame, Kelp, Kombu, Laver, Nori, Spirulina, and Wakame.

Seafood is a source of ORGANIC (safe) Arsenic compounds with little or no toxicity.

Enjoy your vacation and delicious nutrition in the best possible health. A refreshing break from the daily routine can be a blessing.

To your good health, wherever you may be,
