Something Exciting

B'SD

20 Elul, 5777

It will soon be Rosh HaShana, the weeks-long Jewish New Year season, a time preceded by month-log introspection across the Jewish world. The goal of that reflection is to become an ever-better person, stretching our capacities in untried, sometimes simply necessary directions.

One of the things that has long been on my to-do list is to learn to use different tools for conveying deep thoughts so that people can benefit from the insights. Presented in a dramatic and non-threatening way, those deep thoughts allow an observer to look at issues with objectivity, to be able to see life from another person's perspective.

I took specific actions to achieve that long-considered goal this summer. I've made a video for which I wrote a script and innovated a presentation designed to rock the public's realization about the depth of an important mental health issue.

I hope to share the results with you in a few days. I hope that you'll find them as exciting as I do.

Meanwhile, my videographer and I are about to finish editing the video. We had quite a bit of material to work with.

Please bear with me as I tend to some tedious technical details, a meeting with my journalism boss (he'll be the first person to view the video other than me), accomplish a few work-related interviews with mental health professionals, and take a trip to visit friends celebrating a joyous occasion.

I plan to post another update to this blog by Thursday. I definitely need some time off for the next 48 hours.

My prayers and wishes for well-being are with people suffering around the world in Mexico, the Caribbean, Florida and elsewhere. I've literally lost sleep from praying so much.

Many normal people cry at the shock, pain and frustration of a medical or disability diagnosis. Anger and sadness are  other dimensions of the problem. So is a sense of guilt.

A medical crisis - you'd cry too, if it happened to you. Use your tissues and handkerchiefs with my blessings borne of experience. GOD gives you Permission to Weep (read about that on pages 5 and 6 in EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge). And you can say that to any critics after explaining that "It's MY Crisis! And I'll Cry if I Need To."

Kids with Type 1 Diabetes Will Soon Have a New Resource!

B'SD

19 Kislev 5770

Children do not relate well to illness and restraint. Childhood is the learning ground for developing mature behavior in about 1.5 to 2 decades. They need user-friendly lessons and approaches that meet their non-adult needs for complying with dietary rules, physical limitations and uncomfortable medical treatment.

Diabetic children need to cooperate
with blood checks, too.

The Children with Diabetes website has addressed those needs for a while.

Now Israel's child-friendly and fun-oriented Kav-Or Distance Learning site for hospitalized children is about to add another page to its web presences: Type 1 Diabetes information geared to children with that condition.

Kav-Or means "Connection to Light" in Hebrew. Ending the darkness of lonely hospital stays and of being different from other children definitely connects little ones to lighter days and outlooks. The multi-lingual site informs readers of how to manage their medical conditions and have some fun in Arabic, English, Hebrew and Spanish.

Lighten your child's life with a visit to
Kav-Or online. And check out its soon-to-debut site dedicated to Children with Type 1 Diabetes. You'll find out about sugar levels, insulin use and nutrition there. The content is being created based on the questions often asked by children with diabetes. The site will offer solutions to enjoying holiday meals and school trips, restaurants, sports activities, and more, providing tools and information for handling those situations. Be sure to check out the interactive Flash carbohydrate calculator with visual and textual elements for calculating the insulin-to-carbohydrate ratio of various meals!

Hmm, some adults might need
to see that, too ;^ )

Want some other terrific, kid-friendly resources that the Kav-Or and Children with Diabetes sites don't have? They're inside my book! Buy and read it today!

"I think the medical establishment is much more frustrating than the illness."

28 Tishrei 5768

Tears are a call for help. Compassionate medical and mental health professionals respond correctly to them. But part of the medical world does not respond correctly to the fear, pain, and sheer terror that some patients feel about serious medical conditions. That complicates matters.

Many people agree with me: the medical world is NOT meeting all of a patient’s needs. Blizzards of medically-related paperwork that numb the brain happen way too often. Brusque comments from medical professionals add to someone's pain over a dire diagnosis. Emotions tear your heart and mind. Terrible time-consuming delays before treatment (even before diagnosis!), and awful words that chill the soul seem to be a sub-specialty of too many medical offices. Don’t you just want to scream to some compassion-challenged and dismissive doctors and technicians that "It's MY Crisis and I'll Cry if I Need To"?

I wrote my book to help people who need to have their medical issues addressed in optimal fashion. I'm preparing an online video about my book so that patients, therapists and doctors can easily learn more about It's MY Crisis and I'll Cry if I Need To and why they should buy it, then use it together.

One of my journalism colleagues responded to a "Request for Advice" message from me regarding the preparation of that video. She definitely understands how you and I feel. Read on:

This is experience as a listener being told they have cancer. Keep it
simple. There were lots of sources that gave me lots of information,
most of which I already had. The one that was helpful was the one
that said First, relax. Second, take your time. Third, ... I think
there were 10 things to do, in order.

You've already written the book and it may not be 1, 2, 3, but your
presentation can be.

I think the medical establishment is much more frustrating than the illness.
