Another Medical Professional Praises EMPOWER Yourself!

B'SD

7 Av 5771

I found this book review at the Barnes & Nobel bookselling site:

Yocheved Golani has written a comprehensive manual for the ill and those helping the person experiencing a medical crisis. Her approach is compassioante and filled with messages of hope and universal faith.

I found the book to be pro-active, not reactive. In Ms. Golani’s encouragement to use positive language, she enables a reader to look at their circumstance as a point of growth. She has productive exercises for the reader, using one’s own words to approach a medical crisis (or chronic illness) is going to last much longer than the “you should” messages so many ill people face.

The list of resources is a valuable commodity! Whew, everyone experiencing illness should have access to this comprehensive list- it’s action oriented, for sure. Ultimately, the most endearing and enduring message one can receive from this book is: Medical crisises may happen, but who you are, how you manage- it’s in your hands. Pick up this book and be your own best advocate!

Many readers of "It's MY Crisis! And I'll Cry If I Need To: EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge" are European men who are now my Facebook friends or E-mail buddies. Gentlemen, how about recommending my book in your part of the map? You need not say why you know about it, only that you do (& that medical and mental health pros recommend it).

Oh - while I was chatting with a publicist today (I handle some of his work), I learned that he'd complimented me on LinkedIn, a business network:

"Yocheved is a great writer. It is as simple as that.
But if you have looked for good writers....you know
it really isn't that simple. Whatever she writes
about - she sounds like an expert, a pro. And
her writing is 'excited' - she sounds like she
enjoys the topic and I am sure that has an
impact on the reader.

Plus, she is fast and very nice!"

Sweeten Your Indoor Life in 1 Simple Step

B'SD

Summer's hot and humid, the thunderstorms messed up your barbecue. You just don't want to risk your health recovery/coping process on severe weather conditions. Here's a simple 1-step solution: Indoor Beach Party!

Grab your gear: sunglasses, beach towels, tan lotion and food. Set it up indoors and play some funky music while you enjoy the silly setting. Arrange for someone to prepare barbecue'd food and feel better fast.

My classmates and I did this in college and it truly is fun for people on the mend - and everybody else. Yep, college. Not a waste of time as too many critics feared ; ^ )

Seriously, readers, I've witnessed Recreation Therapists in medical institutions do this sort of activity and the staff, patients and visitors ate it up with glee.

Today is the joyous day of Purim, when Jews celebrate miraculous survival from attempted annihilation with song, silliness and good cheer.

There's a universal message in the holiday.

You'll learn about it in this video.

No matter your situation, YOU can fulfill a role as no other person in the world can. Be the most dignified, gracious and productive person you can be. Even if you're facing illness.

Sorry for the late posting. I filmed my newest video today. That took travel & performance time. Once we've edited out my "Um"s and "Hmm"s I'll post it here.

Okay, on to Tapping into YOUR Potential. I knew I had an important choice to make when I faced death by a benign brain tumor literally crushing all my nerves. I had to invent a way to remain alive, thriving and healthier as time went by.

I burned my Bridge of Fear and forged ahead. Thank GOD I succeeded (HE gets most of the credit ;^ )

I want to follow up recent blogposts with something that can get you into a different and dynamic dimension of reality.

You're sad and tired over being sick. Life seems to have slowed down, gone all wrong.

"Why me?" and "Why can't I be like everybody else?" might be questions haunting your heart and mind.

Lectures from the pulpit aren't helping you. Clergy, therapy, whatever. They're not making your life better. You even wonder if GOD cares about you and your suffering.

I understand.

Well, sometimes GOD talks to us in astonishingly unexpected ways. Here's a blessing: A YouTube video that demonstrates the answer to the question "Why must you be like everybody else?"

I thank Randy Gage for alerting the Twitter world to this video.

Sellout!

B'SD

4 Tevet 5769

Last night I spoke to a crowd about my book. My supply of colorful copies was gone within minutes of ending my presentation. A neurologist in the crowd congratulated me for helping people to understand that "We can make the best of what's left" after a devastating medical experience.

The decision to go forward is up to each of us. The possibilites are unknown.

The audience was well aware of my vision problems and that I am still under considerable medical care. They appreciated my "Go for it!" attitude knowing full well that my sight is unpredictable. Doctors have explained to me that I literally see a different picture each time I blink. It doesn't stop people from cheerfully supplying a helpful arm to assist me when I walk on stairs or bumpy terrain. In fact, my desire to persevere motivates people to step forward when I need assistance.

You can buy a copy of my book by clicking on the right-hand margin. Look for the colorful hotlink and get your copy of my "Lifebook for Drying Your Tears and Coping with a Medical Challenge" today!

Here's looking to the future. Please mark the start of 2009, and your entire future, with reasonable care.

3 Elul 5768

WOW, sorry I didn't post anything yesterday. I've been on the road speaking about my book and how I've made phenomenal recoveries from medical crises.

But, ah, the other reason I lacked time to write to you is because after I completed several days of speaking engagements, my phone line filled with callers from across the country and abroad. Some of those callers were DOCTORS!

It was time-consuming and so very rewarding to speak with so many people from diverse walks of life: A retired NY City police detective, surgeons, therapists, and regular people. My thoughts are literally richocheting around the world and helping people to cope.

I'll be in the USA on speaking tour this December and January, doing my best to cheer up whole communities. I look forward to meeting you, perhaps, while I'm on tour.

Good News spreads, and much more nicely than the other stuff. Cheer up YOUR community, or maybe just someone you know who's facing a medical crisis and feeling crushed by it, when you buy a copy of my book for them or hire me to speak in your area.

All the best,

Yocheved

Nurture Your Inner Giggle

19 Tamuz 5768

Today, someone asked me how I cope with stress and continue smiling. Here's one technique that I shared with her (you can sort of listen in on the conversation as I relay it below):

"I believe that each of us has an Inner Giggle and it needs nurturing.

"Crises tend to cancel out our sense of joy and hope. But the fact that we yearn to be happier than we are is the best signal that our senses of joy and hope remain alive. Battered, but alive. So, I recommend doing what it takes to puff more life back into those parts of our brains and hearts. I've learned that when we can master our emotions, we can place a problem into manageable perspective, and cope with one aspect of the problem at a time. It can be a medical crisis, an emotional issue, or something else that really whomped your sense of well-being.

"To give you an example of what I mean, listen to how I helped a friend of mine going through the train system with me. She'd misfed her tickets in the turnstile that lets passengers board the train. She had no way to join me as I began boarding! Cursing herself into a frenzy, she noticed that I stepped out of the car and bought 2 ice creams at the vending machine just beyond her reach. As the ticket agent resolved the problem with a credit card, I welcomed my friend 'to the other side of the tracks,' handed her an ice cream and ordered her to start licking hers so she could nourish her 'Inner Giggle.'

"HUH?" She asked. "My inner what?"

I smiled over my ice cream cone and replied, "Your Inner Giggle. Times get rough. Even a lowly turnstile can attack and eat up your travel tickets. But hey, you need to chill out. Let the ice cream feed your sense of happiness so you can get your giggle back."

My friend grinned and bit into her ice cream. In minutes she was laughing, grateful for the break from being angry at herself and able to reassess the situation in a far more user-friendly way.

Trust me, I didn't want to travel with a friend cursing herself for the next few hours. I did what I could to humorize the situation and she followed my lead. We laughed at the problem, not at her. That's a critically important point.

Feeding your Inner Giggle. You can do so much to restore a sense of control in your life. Healthy laughter minimizes the destructiveness of a given problem. It also releases tension, giving it a safe way to leave your system.

Stuck in bed and feeling helpless, bored, angry, filled with physical and emotional pain? Fill in the blank as you wish. But realize that you CAN do something to help yourself cheer up.

Listen to music you enjoy by asking someone to set up the radio, CD player or other device for you. Select your music. Go on, you KNOW what you like!

Decorate your surroundings despite limitations on your present abilities. Consider arranging some pictures or flowers nearby, or spray-painting pine cones with a bit of assistance and an open window. Look at some mementoes you enjoy. You get the idea. Do something you want to do.

Ask someone to share jokes with you.

DO NOT poke fun at or ridicule yourself. That's not user-friendly. Ethnic and off-color jokes hurt. Keep the humor wholesome.

Feed your inner giggle with nourishing thoughts and actions. Let yourself laugh despite the pain as you learn to retake control of your emotions.

We can't control our medical situations, only how we respond to them. My book holds laugh-out-loud anecdotes from famous people about how they coped with stress. Buy your copy today, and share their ideas with them!

Compliments are Coming In!

24 Iyar 5768

As a journalist and book/music reviewer I've left myself, the writer, out of the story career-long. I'm unforgiving about self-promotion in what's supposed to be impartial analysis. It blurs the lines. But selling a book I've authored requires that I step into the "picture" despite my preference to live my life simply, without fanfare.

So here's the scoop: A popular website is preparing a feature story about my approach to coping with medical or any crises (trust me, adjusting to life in Israel is no picnic for a former Motown woman who did line dances long before she knew how to dance the Hora and was used to Western world culture. Talk about Culture Shock!). The interviewer is gathering quotes from my friends and acquaintances who've been sharing their thoughts about me and my book. Read on to find out what a few of them think of my spiritual and general takes on LIFE, on ADVERSITY and on GREETING LIFE WITH A GRIN:

“Yocheved Golani is living proof that emuna is the greatest power on earth. With faith and perseverance, the supernatural miracles in her life have become the natural course of events. She is a shining example of what Rebbe Nachman of Breslev teaches, that 'There’s no such thing as despair.'” - Rabbi Lazer Brody http://lazerbrody.typepad.com/

"She amazes me with her strength and femininity. Yocheved makes me laugh and makes it OK to cry as well. We should all grow to posess these qualities that this phenomenal woman holds." - Galia Sapozhnikov, L,M.T, D,Ay

"Yocheved Golani is a determined woman. She has battled the most difficult trials and tribulations and emerged standing with her head held high. I respect her perseverance and highly recommend her book!" - Lenny Solomon, Shlock Rock

"Yocheved is a fighter who does not want to give up, extremely important at this time of history. She knows how to roll with the punches. In spite of difficulty, she remains steadfast in her faith in Hashem (G'D) and His good, and lives to make her contribution to Klal Yisroel (the Jewish People) and the geulah shlaimah (Redemption). If anyone deserves the proverbial pat on the back, it is Yocheved." - Pinchas Winston http://thirtysix.org/

Stay tuned. I'll let you know when the TO-BE-ANNOUNCED site's story about me goes live. ;- D

Pay Your Medical Professional Compliments and Say "Thank You," too

21 Iyar 5768

Hmmm, perhaps some patients should read the book pictured above. Miss Manners' Guide to Excrutciatingly Correct Behavior could prevent some serious headaches, perhaps save some lives.

I'm giving some equal time to beleaguered medical professionals today.
Read Wanna Kill Your Doctor? then reflect on how well, or how poorly, you're communicating your thoughts as you face a medical crisis.

This is not merely Australia's problem. Professional medical journals worldwide have addressed the problem of
violence toward medical staff. I've been a patient in Israeli hospitals, witnessing soldiers standing guard to prevent attacks on medical staff and patients alike.
Some of the "clients" in Israeli medical institutions don't appreciate the Jewish help saving or improving their lives. Nor do they like sharing medical materials with Jews.

Politics aside, you owe gratitude and gracious behavior to the medical staff doing its best to serve your needs. Praise your medical professionals for their awesome efforts and say "Thank you" too. They appreciate it as much as anyone. Without that help from your medical professionals, you might not have a life to complain about. Here's one such example:
Cancer Research Bank.

Temporary Leave of Absence

3 Adar 2 5768

Sorry to have to type this at you, but I'm about to leave for the hospital. I need further surgery on my arm, the one broken in a freak accident on Dec. 20 2007, then surgically repaired Jan. 7 2008.

I've needed this follow-up surgery for weeks. But hospital beds have been filled with other, more fragile patients and victims of terrorists. I simply could not access the surgeon I need until now.

Doctors are sort of amazed at how well I endured the agonizing wait for a bed in the orthopedic surgery unit until today. So am I.

My medical team is reading my book a bit more closely now, to better comprhend how I've endured the excruciating pain of the Grade 3 Elbow Fracture, Comminuted Ulna Fracture and broken wrist plus what we believe to be the unexpected (and VERY painful) shift of the metal plates and screws holding my arm together.

It's all in my book, dear readers. I practice what I preach regarding coping mechanisms.

Learn how to cope with your medical challenges by reading It's MY Crisis! And I’ll Cry if I Need To.

MORE Cell Phone Hazards

1 Adar Alef, 5768

Folks, I've called your attention to cell phone dangers in the past. Now another alarm is going global:

Unconvinced that you'll be better off without that killer convenience?

You're busy taking care of business, maybe the family, with your cell phone. But ask yourself if it's worth the wraparound response to know that you may end up too miserable to enjoy the time you saved. Or worse.

Read It's MY Crisis! And I’ll Cry if I Need To and see my Resources section. It lists the titles of some books explaining the hazards of cell phones. They were published long before my book's 2007 debut.

Trust me, your provider left out critically important details. Hang up on potential misery. Please.

Lower Your Pain in One Step with a Personal Pain-o-Meter!

24 Shvat 5768

My recovery from a severely broken arm (doctors had to install a permanent metal brace under the skin, along my bones, in order to save the arm) has been challenging, to put it politely. I've wept from awful, awful pain that major painkillers (including morphine) hardly affected. But I learned to cope with the agony by reducing it at will. Now I'm ready to share that technique wth you.

Want relief from the physical pain of your medical condition? Try this nifty trick.

Turn down the dial on your Personal Pain-o-Meter, a terrific technique that friend/Life Coach Ben Goldfarb taught me. Pain that does not serve a function is pain we can banish at will.

Go on. Study the dial in your mind. Say the level of your pain out loud e.g., "I have a gazillion watts of pain!!!!" or "On a scale from one to ten, ten being the worst level of pain, I have a pain level of... (fill in the blank with a number from 1-10)", then say out loud, "I can lower my pain. I'm lowering it to (name the ever-lower wattage)..."

Then do it. Imagine the arrow on your Personal Pain-o-Meter dialing downward. Push it down with your mind. Choose to reduce your pain. Aim for less than half your present pain level.

Go on, try again until you make progress. Yes, I know it's difficult. I do this exercise, too. My physical therapy workouts are not pleasant. C'mon. Try it again.

You can set aside time as often as needed to work at aiming that arrow increasingly down. You'll know you've succeeded when you realize that your discomfort feels significantly less than it felt earlier. Keep spinning that arrow down until your pain is as low as possible.

Ta-daaa, this is your one-step solution for pain reduction:

CHOOSE TO LOWER YOUR PAIN, AND REDUCE YOUR SUFFERING.

And be sure to buy my book so you can learn other terrific techniques for coping with even emotional distress!

OW That Hurts!

6 Shvat 5768

I apologize for the unexpected, longish break in my posts. I was badly injured in an accident that damaged bones in my dominant arm. The doctor who initially treated me misdiagnosed the fractures, then gave me the wrong type of cast and an ineffective sling. My pain was indescribable.

I later entered a hospital emergency room on December 30 2007 and eventually received orthopedic surgery. I came home 10 days later, just before this weekend. I am grateful to my surgeon, who dealt with my complex case in a realistic and competent fashion. We're giving my arm a few weeks to heal by letting it rebuild healthy new bone. Then I'll need physical therapy once my immobilizing arm-brace is removed.

***
The horrific mismanagement of my medical emergency plus the nature of the freakish accident will likely be the bases for one of my future feature stories for the press. Editors and publishers are welcome to contact me for comments.
***

I'll update my blog with news about my book as I'm able.

Offbeat as this "marketing strategy" may be, I gave a few hospital staff members copies of It's MY Crisis! And I’ll Cry if I Need To. The result? Chaya Har-El, head of social work services at Hadassah Ein Kerem recommended to administrative heads that my book be offered to English-speaking patients of Hadassah Hospital. My surgeon grinned as he looked over his edition and shook my uninjured hand. Ask for a copy if you're ever in Hadassah Hospital.

Meanwhile, if you're in Israel and NOT hospitalized, buy It's MY Crisis! And I’ll Cry if I Need To at Pomeranz Books on Rechov Beeri 5 in Jerusalem. Online purchases can be made through
