Happy New Year

B'SD

26 Elul 5775

Business: Be sure to read Social Media and the MMR Controversy and Heads UP Parents and Coaches.

Life: I'm cooking up a delicious collection of food for friends at Jewish New Year time (the Rosh HaShana holiday begins on Sunday).

Here's a look at the seed crackers I've prepared.

Here's a message I've shared far a wide. I hope that you'll ponder and enjoy it.

When you pray with tears, you unlock the Heavenly gates;
when you pray with joy, there are no gates.
~R. Lazer Brody

Who you are is a gift from G-d.
Who you become is your gift TO G-d!!!!
~ Rabbi David Aaron

Those messages are not just for the Jewish kids in the class.

May the world be blessed with unending goodness in 5776.

See you next year!

Get that Child OUT of the Car NOW!

B'SD

14 Av, 5773

Many hearts are broken after people leave children in cars while running errands. The time saved can turn into a lifetime of grief.

When you exit a vehicle, take the child/ren with you.

Children first. Period.

No shortcuts.

I understand that firefighters recommend that when breaking a window you should

(A) pick a side window (not front or back) as far away from the child as possible and

(B) try to poke it from the corner rather than smashing it through the center.

Children first. Period.

Even if you're forgetful.
Lives depend on you.

Children first.

Take a look and save a life.

A glance into parked cars can save lives.

If you walk past a vehicle, look inside.
Make sure children were not left in it.

If they were,
SUMMON HELP!!!!!!!

Cooling Down Dramatically from the Heat Wave

B'SD

12 Av, 5773

I feel miserable just reading about America's heat wave, and I live in the always-hot Middle East!

Boston to Chicago: More Than 100 Million Feel Stifling Heat
www.accuweather.com
Plain and simple, this week may feel the worst of any week for this summer in the Northeast and parts of the Midwest. The region will be a virtual sauna bath.

Britons aren't doing much better. Roads are melting in Cambridge, possibly elsewhere. Wildfires and drownings are part of the horror

The heat and humidity can be physically plus emotionally draining.

Lack of sleep due to heat stress worsens the problems.

Surfing Past a Heat Wave!

B'SD

10 Av, 5773

I came through yesterday's 9Av fast day without problems, as usual. I was grateful for the blessing of lower temperatures, which made thirst less of an issue.

But WOW I'm doing double-takes at HIGH temperature readings around the world.

Do yourselves, your kids and anyone ill or elderly a favor: Make sure that EVERYBODY drinks lots of liquids such as water

Tea is fine, coffee is not (it makes you urinate more often than if you didn't drink it). Soup is good, too. Cold soup like borscht or cucumber soup would be delightful, delicious and a lifesaver.

Cool down more with sedentary activities such as reading, doing crafts, watching videos or listening to soothing music. You can surf through and way past potential problems that way.

Make triple sure that children and pets are NOT left in hot vehicles or other places.

Heat kills quickly. Heat stroke is no joke.

Let me know what you're doing to stay comfortable.

Exhausted from High Heat & Humidity? Skip the Donuts, Reach for Refreshing...

B'SD

13 Elul 5770

WHEW! I've been facing unusually high temperatures and humidity for a long time, causing me to slow down my schedule and physical efforts. Now my schedule is slowing more as friends arrive from outside Israel. Five planeloads of people arrived at Ben Gurion airport this morning but only two passport control staff members are on duty.

I'm preparing several jugs of chilled water and bowls of refreshing fruit to greet the arrivals when we finally meet. We'll need to keep replacing our energy to cope with the stresses of weather and messed up schedules. Scientists are aguing, as you read this, about how all that tiredness happens:

Contrary to Popular Models,
Sugar Is Not Burned
by Self-Control Tasks

Contradicting a popular model of
self-control, a psychologist
says the data from a 2007 study
argues against the idea that
glucose is the resource used to
manage self control and that
humans rely on ...
full story

My guess is that doctors will debate this just as they've argued for and against hot/cold/moisture-only humidifiers for congested people.

I suggest you sensibly and safely do what works for you in exhausting weather and situations. A nutritious diet rarely fails to provide the basics of bodily needs. Rest as needed and prioritize tasks that must be done versus those that can safely be delayed.

Sleep Better on Hot Nights - Without Air Conditioning!

B'SD

23 Av 5770

I live in Israel where summers have one temperature: HOT. We're used to coping with heat. Fellow Israelis and I find it surprising to earn of shockingly high temperatures around the world these days. We sympathize with your discomfort. You're not used to the situation.

I'll share some tips with you:

1) Partially fill water bottles, cap them tightly and place them in the freezer. You can later add water to the newly formed ice. It will stay chilled for hours as you carry the bottle with you during the day. Keep another at bedside during summer nights that keep waking you up thirsty. Enjoy the refreshing drinks.

2) Click on this WIKI to learn
how to stay cool at night.

Pleasant dreams,
