Get that Child OUT of the Car NOW!

B'SD

14 Av, 5773

Many hearts are broken after people leave children in cars while running errands. The time saved can turn into a lifetime of grief.

When you exit a vehicle, take the child/ren with you.

Children first. Period.

No shortcuts.

I understand that firefighters recommend that when breaking a window you should

(A) pick a side window (not front or back) as far away from the child as possible and

(B) try to poke it from the corner rather than smashing it through the center.

Children first. Period.

Even if you're forgetful.
Lives depend on you.

Children first.

Take a look and save a life.

A glance into parked cars can save lives.

If you walk past a vehicle, look inside.
Make sure children were not left in it.

If they were,

Color Your Life with Respect

B'SD

17 Tamuz 5771

Today is a sad day on the Jewish calendar, 17 Tamuz. But despite the somber message of the day, I'll share a sweet message with you.

My neighbor's little girls adore playing in my large garden of vegetables, flowers and tiled patio. We spend considerable time chatting with each other in the kitchen, or on walks with the dog, too.

The other day, one of the children brought over a bouquet of colorful pictures she'd crayoned for me. "She loves you," her mother crooned. "She loves the way you treat her and her sister. She really does."

It was a touching moment. It bespeaks the respect I shower on the children, paying attention to their many questions, correcting their grammar with a cheerful remark, and simply getting down on their level to understand how they see the world. I keep responding to them in a way that invites the girls to think a bit harder, to consider new ideas and to behave a bit more maturely.

Does that come easily to me? Not always. Sometimes I'm rushed to meet a deadline or to accomplish some task. But children only know one thing: how you behave towards them. And my little neighbors now show mutual respect for me ;^ D

I hope that you will color your life with more time and respect for children and everyone in your life. The safety and kindness you create can help all of us to weather the storms of sadness, confusion and despair. Take time to figure out how you can do that, then keep at it until being more patient becomes easier and easier for you.

May you be blessed with gifts as sweet as the pictures now gracing my home.

Mourning the Victim of an Unspeakable Murder

B'SD

16 Tamuz 5771

I'm having a hard time finding topics to share with you as we mourn the unspeakably monstrous murder of Leiby Kletzky H'YD (Hebrew acronym for May his blood be Avenged). I suspect that all of us need to mourn him more. Ultimately, we'll learn life lessons from this part of life. Lessons I'd alerted the wider world to in a long-ago blogpost: Perverts Do Not Change. Demand Total Protection from Them.

Here's an overview of the search for, then burial of, the defenseless child.

Abusers do not deserve harbor.

EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge advises readers to seek help only from people who provide complete respect to them. Photocopy that excerpt. Post it far and wide.  Buy the book from Booklocker Publishing.

Several Solutions if You or the Family Need Dental Care

B'SD

15 Tamuz 5771

Sad news in the healthcare world: Millions of Kids Lack Dental Care, IOM Reports

Dental health is essential for the rest of the body. The ability to properly chew food affects our digestion and absorption of nutrition. Teeth and gums in poor condition create pain and a chain of reactions that damage health. Kids lacking basic dental care now can be severely affected by lack of oral hygiene and competent dental care for the rest of their lives.

Dentists can identify serious health problems by looking at your mouth - even if if you brush and floss regularly and see a dentist on a regular schedule. Oral health has a Mouth-Body Connection.

The solution can be simple in many parts of the world. England's National Health Service offers low-cost and free dental care to citizens who can prove financial need for it. America's National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research published up-to-date Finding Low-Cost Dental Care news this past March. Israel provides free dental care for children (many of Israel's immigants had never been to dentists until arriving here). Other places provide free or affordable dental care at teaching colleges or charitable institutes. YOUTube is full of videos about that.

and other health problems.

A SAFE, Affordable Way to Get Rid of Bugs!

B'SD

19 Adar 2, 5771

A grateful neighbor asked me to share one of my uber-affordable Home-Safe-Home tips with you. Here goes:

The weather is rather unpredictable around the world these days. Hot, cold, earthquake, fire, who knows? We're not the only ones confused by it all. BUGS are seeking indoor shelter to escape cold temperatures.

Cold weather is driving crawling creatures indoors to warm up and you might be wondering how to safely get rid of them. Bug-bombing with synthetic chemicals is not a smart idea as larger people breathe that stuff and children (plus pets) also lick it from the floor. Here's a simple solution for those of you wondering how to safely rid your homes of the creepy crawlies: sage oil (called shemen marvah in Hebrew).

Buy an incense burner (they're available in gift shops, health food stores and maybe at some regualr grocers) and fill the cup with tap water. Add a drop of sage oil to the water, then ignite a tealite in the little chamber below. Keep this out of a child's reach and on a stable surface that won't be harmed by the heat under the ceramic incense burner holding a lit candle.

You'll smell the sage oil and so will the bugs. Cockroaches, worms, flying insects will leave as they dislike the odor. I suggest burning sage oil a few times weekly to keep them away.

You can burn citronella oil in mosquito-ey summertime. You'll remain itch-free with food uninfested by flying insects.

Health food shops sell sage oil and citronella oil. Remember to use them in incense burners safely situated while the candles burn.

Solutions for Childhood Insomnia

B'SD

16 5770

Kids have been running around playing, making mischief and having fun since the dawn of history. Parents are relieved when they finally get to bed and sleep off a hard day, let alone their children ;^ )

But something odd happened at the dawn of the Digital Age. Children stopped moving about so much. Why? They sat still to play video games, iPods, iPads, with cell phone calls and texting, and PC nonsense (including hours of sit-still digital TV and movies). Scholastic scores began dropping in percentages reflecting time spent awry. Young brains and bodies became flabby, not developed to maximum potential.

The lessons of the "Babysitter"
Television Age went unheeded.

Kids konked out, losing more sleep as time went by, especially if they've had PCs and cellphones in their bedrooms. Articles such Insomnia in Kids on the Rise began filling air waves and pixels.

Non-developing muscles, bones and brains were not feeling tired from hard days at sedentary play. Young minds overstimulated by sugary short-term energy foods, counter-productive access to gadgets, games and pointless communications began sitting atop underused bodies. Too much fast food piled on the calories as the rates of obese and diabetic pediatric cases scared the willies out of medical professionals.

The above is a prescription
for misfired biological signals.

Here are the Solutions for Insomnia in children and adults: STOP eating processed foods and move around more. Close your eyes and enjoy restful sleep when the sky goes dark. The world will continue spinning on its access if your children do not play one more game or text another message or make a cell phone call.

Eat simple, organic foods high in nourishment, flavor and preparation ease. Processed
foods are fulll of phthalates (found in plastics, shampoos, etc.), pesticides (weed-killer reaches your dinner plate in trace amounts your gut just does not need), lead, mercury and food colors. This blog and I already warned you of the xenoestrogens in expensive hygiene products and some foods, They are wreaking havoc with body functions.

Need a one-phrase concept that describes the above? SELF DISCIPLINE.

Parents, the purpose of long childhoods is so you have time to teach your offspring repeated lessons they need to know for satisying, productive adulthoods. Re-read this post as often as you wish and get busy. Your children need you to mold them into well-educated, decent people who don't need medical attention for unwarranted lifestyle mistakes.

All of you will be sleeping deeply and regularly in the foreseable future.

Pedophile on the Loose!

B'SD

Readers, this urgent update concerns something happening in the Jewish world, but the threat pertains to all of us anywhere, any time. We are all human, vulnerable, and need each other. I've blogged about pedophilia before. Here's today's message:

Prevent a Purim Tragedy

B'SD

12 Adar 5770

The Jewish world is gearing up for the exciting, fun holiday of PURIM!

Parents, teachers and vendors, you are obligated by Jewish law to protect children and everyone from safety hazards. Masks, matches, fireworks, costumes, liquor, etc. all present health concerns and legal limits. There is not one reason to endanger health or happiness by ending the holiday in tragedy.

Keep to the spirit of the day. See
PURIM SAFETY TIPS and click on any one of those pertinent messages. Celebrate as you should: with good sense and respect for other people. Enjoy the celebration of life from your sickbed, wheelchair, or other location.

And remember...

The "Ad lo yada" mitzva can be accomplished with a nap.

Let Younger Kids Enjoy Sensible Internet Time

B'SD

30 Shvat 5769

Today and tomorrow are fun days on the Jewish calendar: The beginning of Adar, the month of the joyous Purim holiday! Now, WHAT does that have to do with Sensible Internet Time and Internet Safety? Read on!

Parents and other guardians need to handle the concern about child-safe Internet access for the children in their care. One good strategy is to keep the
computer in an area where parents can always monitor what children are doing on the PC (family room, kitchen, etc.). Keeping a computer in the child's room or anywhere far from parental eyes is NOT a healthful thing to do!

Here's a fun project the kids can enjoy: setting up their own website: See
http://www.kids.gov/ and find kewl research tools (among other kid-safe stuff) at the US government's interagency kids' portal.

A handy homework helper, that above link connects to many kinds of informative sites. Now kids, let the adults have a chance to view the information, too. Then all of you can discuss what you've learned about the arts (music, literature, sculpture, painting, dance and more), computers, geography, government, health, plants and animals (Animal Planet is not the only fun resource on the topic), safety, space and transportation.

And oh, yes, here's what this post has to do with Purim: click on the following link to check out the fun-filled pages at what I call
Purim-palooza!

Happy, Healthy Internet Time!
