Good News for Americans with Fibromyalgia!

Tomorrow night the Yom Kipur holiday begins. I'll join other Jews in begging GOD for worldwide mercy, forgiveness and patience. The High Holiday season is a focused time of introspection and resolve.

Looking forward to other upbeat developments, I'm pleased to be able to share some good news with a population that has been terribly under served by the medical and wider worlds:

The day that many fibromyalgia sufferers have been waiting for has finally come. Fibromyalgia is real and is now recognized as such by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the National Center for Health Statistics.

Effective October 1, 2015, fibromyalgia has its own diagnosis code that is included in the list of official diagnostic codes used by the U.S. healthcare industry including doctors, insurance companies and government agencies. ICD-10-CM (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification) is the most recent revision to the list of these codes that now includes fibromyalgia. Previously, doctors had to use a general code called “myalgia and myositis, unspecified.”

Passover is only a day away (the holiday of spiritual and physical freedom begins Monday night). I've been busy preparing for the fun and introspection these past few weeks (when I'm not studying medical coding or learning how to save lives).

I have not forgotten about the impact of the ICD10 medical coding delay. The situation scares me. Few Americans realize that it could have put money in their wallets with bigger and more frequent medical insurance reimbursements.

How are hospitals dealing with the unaffordable healthcare situation that an apparently clueless congress and healthcare-endangering president dealt to them?

Americans: Tell Your Senators NOW to Promote Better Health Care with ICD10!

BIG news in America's medical world:

The World Health Organization long ago alerted the federal government and the medical world of the USA that compliance with the most recent version of the

International Classification of Diseases (ICD)

had better occur by October 1, 2014. BUT... things did not work out smoothly.

Some medical professionals objected to the most recent version, ICD10, citing its exacting levels of specificity and initially cumbersome use in daily life.

For reasons not clear to me, someone, not yet identified, inserted a single sentence to allow a vote against the use of ICD10 in a bill presented to Congress last week.

The hullaballoo began on Wednesday. On Thursday the House of Representatives voted to delay ICD10 implementation another year.

Today, Monday, US senators will vote to confirm or not to confirm that vote.

The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) cites serious financial and medical objections to the denial of ICD10's implementation/use in the USA.

AHIMA is getting the word out in multimedia and social media. An ICD10 medical coding student poised to be certified with credentials from AHIMA this summer, I hope that you'll join us in asking US senators to vote "NO" to bill HR4302.

IT'S HARD TO COPE The pressure's on. We want to be heroes at saving our own lives, or somebody else wants us to be heroic. [But] we feel like quitting this scary situation. As the mental pressure builds, our minds sort of explode. We might start asking "Why is this happening to me?" We don't ask that question because we necessarily want answers… The question is really about accusing GOD of having made a mistake- a BIG mistake.
