How to Reduce Risks of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - SIDS

Johns Hopkins University and the USA's National Institutes of Health have released online information, also published in Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine about how to minimize the risk for SIDS. Some remarks stand out in the report:

"A large body of research has shown that
placing infants on their backs to sleep
reduces the risk of
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS),
the leading cause of death during the
first year of life in the United States."

Placing infants on their backs for sleep
remains the single most effective
means we knowto reduce the risk
of sudden infant death syndrome,"
said Marian Willinger, Ph.D.,
Special Assistant for
SIDS research at the
Eunice Kennedy Shriver
National Institute of Child Health
and Human Development
(NICHD), which funded the analysis.

"For the vast majority of infants,
concerns about choking while
back sleeping are unfounded."

Dr. Willinger noted that
certain conditions might prompt a
physician to consider recommending
against back placement.
However, such recommendations
are arrived at only after
careful deliberation and
after taking into account all the
potential risks and benefits
for the infant involved."

And PLEASE be aware of something I've mentioned on this blog before: There is significant evidence that SIDS became more common after crib mattress manufacturers began using synthetic materials to make baby bedding. There are 100% natural fiber and safe-for-baby crib mattresses to buy around the world. Simply ask your local health food society members, or look up the information in phone directories and on the Internet.

Make Sure YOUR BABY Doesn't Have a KILLER CRIB!

Many of my blog fans are in Europe. You might not realize that the USA is filled with horrifying news of a crib recall promoted by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The company involved is Stork Craft in Canada. I have no doubt it ships cribs overseas.

Check the labels on your baby's, grandchild's and other cribs. Compare them to those featured at

Read the instructions there and follow them. If it makes you feel better, call the phone numbers posted at the site for reassurance and instructions on what to do:

Firm's Recall Hotline: (877) 274-0277
CPSC Recall Hotline: (800) 638-2772

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome: Prevent Crib Death (Cot Death for UKers)

16 Cheshvan 5768

Do Everything You Can to Prevent Crib Death!

It's MY Crisis and I'll Cry if I Need To addresses medical situations for every age. This blog, however, usually addresses more adult issues. Today we take a serious direction change to focus on a mysterious and terribly sad reality: Crib Death as it's known in North America, or Cot Death as it's known in the UK. The medical world calls it Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, SIDS for short.

It is when babies suddenly die without warning or previous illness. Caregivers find them lifeless in their strollers, cribs and cots. The nightmare is raw and deep. No warning cries from the beloved baby, no symptoms at all that anything bothered them. All that's left are undeserved feelings of guilt and an unending sadness.

A newish discovery might have the answers to solving the mystery and for preventing future infant deaths. It can help grieving people to absolve themselves of a crime they've never committed.

The source of the problem might be the baby's bedding! A combination of chemicals and fungus combine in a lethal mix of unseen, unsmelt gases that many people have not learned about. Unaware of the danger, many loving parents, grandparents, and other caregivers have placed children upon bedding that just might be killing them.
