Fire SAFETY! Be Sensible about Passover Preparations.

B'SD

 14 Nisan, 5776

It's that time of year again, when Jews worldwide have cleansed their hearts and homes of chametz, the stuff that we may not have during Passover.

The leavened foods will be burned before the holiday begins, so I'm sharing safety tips from a rescue organization before you light the first match. (Psst: Bring a bucket of water to extinguish embers before you leave!):

Subject: [BS/RBS list] Erev Pesach Safety Tips from Hatzala Beit Shemesh

Once again, we have reached Biur Chometz time! In previous years, Hatzala Beit Shemesh has been called to burn cases where children and even adults have been burned, in some cases seriously.. Here are some tips to stay safe this Erev Pesach:

*1. DO NOT EVER!!! place lighter fluid or other chemicals on a raging fire. We'll repeat it again: DO NOT EVER!!! place lighter fluid or other chemicals on a raging fire. A number of years ago, a man and his grandson were seriously injured as they walked near a fire, where children were spraying chemicals on the fire. To this day, they are still dealing with the after effects of this terrible tragedy.*

2. Children should NEVER start or be left alone by a fire, without proper adult supervision.

3. Plastics and other non-combustible items should not be thrown in the fire. This can cause breathing difficulties.

4. Never, ever throw an aerosol can or sealed bottle in the fire! The can can explode, sending shrapnel and shards into the crowd - and leaving people with injuries similar to a bomb blast!

Some quick burn tips: If, Chas V'Shalom, someone does get a burn, taking these immediate steps will alleviate some of the pain and time of healing.

 A. If a person's clothes are on fire, roll them on the ground and attempt to extinguish the flames. Have someone immediately call emergency!

 B. Immediately remove whatever clothing is covering the burned area. However: DO NOT PEEL OFF CLOTHING WHICH IS STUCK TO THE SKIN!

 C. Place the burned area under cool, but not cold, water until responders arrive on the scene.

 D. Remove any rings, bracelets, or other tight fitting jewelry or body ornaments, as swelling may occur.

 E. DO NOT put any lotions, salves, or creams on the burn without speaking to a medical professional, such as a doctor. These items can trap in the heat, and create more complications to healing.

*Hatzala Beit Shemesh advises you to call for any burn, even if it seems superficial or a minor burn. 02.999.999.2*

We hope these safety tips keep you and your children safe, so you do not need to call us for a burn!

Wishing everyone a Chag Kosher V'Sameach and a very safe and happy Yom Tov!

Lessons to be Learned from the Fire

B'SD

3 Nisan, 5775

My present thoughts about the horrific loss of life in the fire that decimated the Sasson family are focused on perspective.

My dear friend David Morris, head of the charitable organization Lemaan Achai, expressed some excellent perspective on his blog, today. Please join me in reading and re-reading The Brooklyn Tragedy - Are there Lessons to be Learned?

The spiritual dimensions of the disaster are not something we can easily comprehend. This is a time of grief.

Please hold back from the temptation to lecture anyone, to impugn or to insult anybody. Adding pain to aching hearts is not going to improve anyone's life.

Causing fresh pain does not solve problems.

Sometimes, life is not about asking GOD for what we want. We can instead ask GOD "What do YOU want from me?"

Before that can happen, we need to be quiet, to let our hearts and minds adjust a bit to unspeakable pain.

Each person adjusts at their own rate of speed.

This is not a time for making demands of anyone.

And if you need help to know how to discuss what happened with young children, listen to this broadcast by Chai Lifeline's Trauma and Crisis Intervention Department.

SKIP the 4th of July Fireworks! Here's Why...

B'SD

25 Tamuz, 5773

Year after year I listen to medical professionals moaning about the self-inflicted damage of people who've lost their eyes, hands and other body parts due to using fireworks.

Sometimes, other people are hurt by simply being nearby.

Please click on Artificial Eye-Maker's Message to the Public.

Find a safer way to have fun. Nothing explosive, OK?

A SAFE, Affordable Way to Get Rid of Bugs!

B'SD

19 Adar 2, 5771

A grateful neighbor asked me to share one of my uber-affordable Home-Safe-Home tips with you. Here goes:

The weather is rather unpredictable around the world these days. Hot, cold, earthquake, fire, who knows? We're not the only ones confused by it all. BUGS are seeking indoor shelter to escape cold temperatures.

Cold weather is driving crawling creatures indoors to warm up and you might be wondering how to safely get rid of them. Bug-bombing with synthetic chemicals is not a smart idea as larger people breathe that stuff and children (plus pets) also lick it from the floor. Here's a simple solution for those of you wondering how to safely rid your homes of the creepy crawlies: sage oil (called shemen marvah in Hebrew).

Buy an incense burner (they're available in gift shops, health food stores and maybe at some regualr grocers) and fill the cup with tap water. Add a drop of sage oil to the water, then ignite a tealite in the little chamber below. Keep this out of a child's reach and on a stable surface that won't be harmed by the heat under the ceramic incense burner holding a lit candle.

You'll smell the sage oil and so will the bugs. Cockroaches, worms, flying insects will leave as they dislike the odor. I suggest burning sage oil a few times weekly to keep them away.

You can burn citronella oil in mosquito-ey summertime. You'll remain itch-free with food uninfested by flying insects.

Health food shops sell sage oil and citronella oil. Remember to use them in incense burners safely situated while the candles burn.

Here's How to Help Israel to Recover from the Haifa Fire

B'SD

29 Kislev 5771

Americans outside Israel can donate here https://www.afmda.org/afmdapublic/index.aspx?Type=1

Israelis and all nationalities can donate here (click on your country's flag)

How BIG is the devastating story?
Myanmar News covered it!
To put this in perspective:
Israel is about the size of Delaware,
smaller than New Jersey.

Imagine losing that much LIFE
& acreage in those places, and you can
realize the devastation
upon Israeli society & forestry.

Here in the Middle East, its hard to grow greenery. Israeli law FORBIDS picking flowers in public spaces. Flower-picking may be done ONLY in private gardens. And, as always, we don't consider life to be optional. Lost lives & bereaved families across the religious spectrum (Druse, Christian, Jewish) are heartaches I can't describe.

Eretz HaKodesh - the Holy Land - is being kissed by HaShem/GOD and blessed with rain today. Some of us have literally danced in the streets over this.

Thanks for helping.

Fire Safety and an Update about the Completed Walk around the World for Brain Tumour Awareness

13 Cheshvan 5768

The Walk Around the World for Brain Tumor Awareness is over. Read about some of the heroes and heroines of the trek:

BRAIN TUMOUR SUPPORTERS WALK THE EQUIVALENT OF MORE THAN TWICE AROUND THE WORLD

tp://virtualtrials.com/news3.cfm?item=4018

The world is waking up to some gritty realities for brain tumor patients and survivors of the surgeries. I hope this message soothes readers who are struggling with loved ones and friends who just don't "get it" about the struggles to cope with Meningiomas, Glioblastomas, Acoustic Neuromas plus other types of brain tumors.

Trying to understand what treatments such as Chemotherapy, Gamma Knife, Brain Surgery, Radiation and their after-effects are all about just adds to the fear of having the tumor in the first place. The good news is that compassionate people are working to improve the whole situation. On many levels.

My prayers for the people in California join yours . May they be blessed to have strength to recover from the horror burning their homes and state.

I've added this update about FIRE SAFETY to my blog as a timely lesson. Everyone needs to know its message.

Do you know the SAFE way to handle a flaming pot or pan on the stove top?

Here's a Life-Saving tip about putting out grease fires: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZGzbd0IvUE

Important Points:

NEVER toss water onto a grease fire. Water is heavier than cooking oil. Water sinks to the bottom where it instantly becomes superheated. The explosive force of the steam blows the burning oil up and out. On the open field it becomes a fireball resembling a nuclear blast. Inside a kitchen the fireball would hit the ceiling, filling the entire room.

And NEVER throw sugar or flour on grease fires! The explosive force kills and maims its victims.

May all your meals be as pleasant as this spread:
