YOU are Your Own BEST Medical Advocate!

B'SD

The reason that EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge advises you that "YOU are your own best advocate" is clearly explained in a recent New York Times article!!!

Boston — The 96-year-old patient with pneumonia in Bed 11 was angry. “Do you really need to check my vital signs every four hours?” he asked.

YOU are Your Own Best Medical Advocate!

B'SD

The's an entire passage in the EMPOWER Yourself book entitled YOU are Your Own Best Advocate (page 31). If those words and the explanation which follows them don't  impress you enough, try reading this article about surgeons who operate on more than one patient in the same session:

Double-Booked: When Surgeons Operate On Two Patients At Once

Rickert and others advise patients who want to avoid overlap to ask detailed questions well in advance and to put their request in writing and on the consent form.
“If you say, ‘I want only you to do the surgery,’ doctors will typically do it,’” Rickert said. “They want the business.”
He also recommends asking, “Are you going to be in the room the entire time during my surgery?” and then repeating that statement in front of the OR nurses the day of surgery. “If the doctor’s not willing to say yes, vote with your feet.”
If a surgeon says he or she will be “present” or “immediately available,” a patient should ask what that means. It may mean that the surgeon is somewhere on a sprawling hospital campus but not in — or even near — your operating room.

There's enough information in that article to make your blood pressure rise startlingly high. Click the link above, and read every word.
And when you're ready to advocate for yourself even more than indicated in the advice above, read what's written in

There are valid reasons that medical and mental health professionals recommend the book.

Words to the Ever-Wiser: YOU are Your Own Best Medical Advocate!

B'SD

7 Tevet, 5777

Words to the Ever-Wiser:

The other day my general practice doctor questioned why I'd requested a blood test for my hemoglobin and a few other blood chemistry levels following the unanticipated loss of blood during my hand surgery this month.

I responded: "I used to be a medical coder. Anyone in that profession would know of the necessity to check blood levels following significant blood loss. Since follow-up surgery is scheduled in a few weeks from now, we need to know FAST that my body can safely endure it!"

He wrote the hall pass for the blood test after saying "Ah, you know what you're talking about."  I took it this morning as nurses carefully checked to fill each necessary vial with my red stuff. Hat tip to my dear friend and fantastic nurse, Terri , who reminded me to have the blood check done.

Life Lesson: Find out relevant facts about your medical situations and be proactive regarding your medical care. Doctors lack time to do much more than check boxes, patients and time slips. YOU are your own best advocate.
