Healing, Bucket Lists and More.

B'SD

1 Iyar, 5775

Iyar is the name of the new Hebrew month, and the Hebrew letters of the word are often interpreted to stand for the Hebrew version of the phrase "I am GOD your healer." I recommend ramping up your prayers at this time.

This is an auspicious time for blessings. The trick is to recognize them.

Want to keep things in perspective as you wait for your prayers to be answered (or figure out that they're being answered over time)? Read motivational The Moral Bucket List

Speaking of bucket lists, I'm kinda wistful for not having achieved a specific item on mine. The Aurora Borealis effect visited more US sites than usual this year, and I missed out on the phenomenon. I've always wanted to stand within its light show. sighhhh...

Two more quick comments for today:

1) Israeli readers need to know that the paper edition of

http://www.booklocker.com/p/books/3067.html?s=TrackingCode

sold out in Israel. You can buy it directly from the publisher, who ships faster than famous online booksites. Please do. I'll be paid faster that way.

2) Journaling and/or blogging can be an effective way of releasing stress and recovering balancing perspective.

A friend of mine writes a moving, insightful blog Chronicles of an NF Survivor about her struggle to deal with necrotizing fasciitis. You might appreciate her searing honesty and simple humanity. In real life, she's a funny, clever lady and super-wife and mom.

If you need a fast FYI to answer the question "What is fascia?" I'll give you a quick response: It holds us together under our skin. Think of Saran Wrap preventing lots of squishy, gooey stuff from spilling out of or sloshing around in a container, if you're American.

Adding "-itis" to a medical word for body parts means that it is infected/inflamed, BTW.

No matter where you're from, you can check this Wiki entry for a more clinical idea of the stuff.

I'll be back on the road tomorrow, for a week or so. I just might have some nifty medical news to share with you then, so stay tuned for updates.

How to Cope with Stressful Times

B'SD

6 Adar 5772

Readers, I recently experienced a series of unusual circumstances that have left me physically drained and increasingly aware of the psycho-social pressures building up around the world.

Sad to say, I've encountered people who have sabotaged the lives of their families and neighbors, let alone themselves. Many of those saboteurs seem to be operating on some sort of auto-pilot, not thinking things through with clarity and honesty. Their minds seem muddled with inconsistent thoughts and contradictory priorities.

My conversations with mental health practitioners at a recent conference underscored the drama of what I've mentioned above. They're witnessing the same phenomenon.

I ask that all of you step back, reflect on and clarify what you believe to be your core values, and whether or not you're living up to them. Do what you can to shore up your clarity of mind, to refresh your spiritual take on life. Improve your relationships.

Do a reality check. Clarify your values with reputable therapists or trusted confidantes who function in constructive ways.

Integrity is when
your beliefs and actions
remain consistent
with each other.

Build inner and outer worlds. Don't destroy them with preventable mistakes.

Naughty or Nice? These Doctors Need Shrinks!

B'SD

16 Tevet 5771

I just read this medical update and paused to reflect on the issue:

Lab Notes:
Impulse May Be Hard-Wired
A murine model may hold the key to
unlocking the relationship between
stress and PTSD,
while that checkout "impulse buy"
may be explained by genes
rather than marketing,
according to reports in this week's
Lab Notes:
Impulse Shopper?
We've Got a Gene... full story

Some clarification about impulsive and other human behaviors could have accompanied the article. Impulsive, as other behaviors, can be controlled by willpower. Clergy and mental health professionals have taught that reality for millenia. Parents are supposed to teach it to their children. Think of the concepts called "Deferred Gratification," "moral choices," and "self restraint."

They are realistic behaviors.

I can just imagine Hollywoodites
and wannabes, though,
trying to avoid personal responsibility
for their choices and actions with
this poorly presented medical
"information."

Good gosh, we need not keep our minds focused on personal failure. You can choose to be nice, not naughty.

How to Solve the Organ Donation Crisis - Despite Moral and Medical Dilemmas

B'SD

5 Tamuz 5769

Lives are on the line because of much-needed organ transplants. Body parts are auctioned to the highest bidders. Defenseless victims might be murdered, their organs "harvested" for the sales to take place. Poorer patients face death for lack of cash.

Patients at
death's door
might not know
what is going on.

They're simply trying to remain alive until doctors and
donors can save them.

MANY, many lives are at stake.

The organ donation world is not systematic, not morally regulated or by any means risk-free. Click on Scandalous Medical and Moral Issue to get some insight into the problem, and perhaps how to solve it.
