How to Protect Your Online Medical Information

B'SD

12 Kislev, 5776

Today we can look at an important issue in today's digital world: Poor online protection of, and dauntingly easy global access to, your medical files.

I suggest that you keep copies of each and every medical visit plus medical test you experience, as a protective measure should online loss of your medical information happen.

You'd be wise to rehearse, in your mind, how you'd finesse breaches of your personal information, before a sense of panic envelopes you should that breach happen. One idea is to focus on your inner and outer progress since a given point in time. Life lessons, enriching experiences and emotional growth can save a person from despair. So is knowing that you're not the only person vulnerable to irresponsible, evil and harmful people.

How to End the Dramatic Increase in Abuse of Prescription Painkillers

B'SD

7 Tammuz

This headline article Dramatic Increase in Abuse of Rx Painkillers doesn't address some relevant issues:

  • Men are unfairly pressured to pretend they can cope with heartache and physical pain

  • Men too often feel or believe that they can't trust someone to help them even after courageously admitting they need some sort of help

  • The medical world too often fails to monitor the use of a patient's drug use and potential for drug abuse

  • Society and the medical world need to admit that men are human, deserve compassion and pain relief - psychological, spiritual and physical

We can turn those realities around into a can-do coping strategy. It takes courage, some training by competent therapists and clinicians, an attitude adjustment in society (start a movement among your friends and colleagues!) and a desire to prevent tragedy.

By the way, many of the "Thank you" letters, E-mails and phone calls I receive for

are from men! I suspect that I know why:

  1. The book is FILLED with privacy-protected answers to questions they need/want to ask. Too often men are simply unaware of whom they can trust to answer them and to protect their confidentiality. The EMPOWER Yourself book is a safe outlet with information that men need.
  2. EMPOWER Yourself lets them calm down, read and re-read the sections important to them in the confidential surroundings of their home, office or wherever they read the book.

Men, you deserve many healing, helpful breaks. As I tell my Self-Help Coaching clients and book buyers, "A medical crisis - you'd cry too, if it happened to you. Use your tissues and handkerchiefs with my blessings borne of experience. GOD gives you Permission to Weep. And you can say that to any critics after explaining that 'It's MY Crisis! And I'll Cry if I Need To.'"

Be sure to read pages 4 and 5, to get that FYI on your license to cry.

The 5-Step Plan for Getting Copies of Your Medical Records

B'SD

24 Tamuz 5770

My cyberlife includes a LinkedIn presence, where I communicate with professionals and laypersons from all walks of life.

One of those people posted a question yesterday, asking how to obtain someone else's medical records with proper authorization. She also asked if everything is in digital format these days, what's called EMR or Electronic Medical Records. My reply to her might be helpful to you, too:

A former Health Information Management
professional who helped the public while I
conferred with lawyers, insurance
companies, statisticians and in-house
personnel, I can tell you how to
accomplish your goal.

1. Electronic Medical Records
do not exist at all
medical offices. Some
practitioners still
use paper only.

2. You need to reach the person
in charge of medical records
at each & every relevant
office, ask about the procedure
for obtaining medical records
and/or abstracts (snippets/
summaries of the main
points in the patient's
medical files), and follow
the protocol as it exists.
Cutting corners won't work as
it endangers the patient's
confidentiality, the
medical office's integrity
and your trustworthiness.

3. Keep a detailed log/diary
of all communications so you
can follow up your efforts
with accurate information.
Note names, dates, contact
info and comments made by
all parties.

4. Keep whatever you receive
in confidence. DO NOT share a
hint or a peek of anything.
Patient confidentiality is a
most sensitive area. You have
no idea whom or how badly
you're hurting someone by
disclosing private medical
information. There's a reason
it's so hard to get hold of
someone else's medical files.

5. For ease of review, I
recommend that you buy a
multi-pocket binder so you
can insert each packet of
information (discs, paper
records, whatever) separately,
keeping things accessible,
readable and safe from
folding, spindling and
other mutilation. DO NOT
EAT OR DRINK near medical
records. Spills obliterate
necessary text. Usually the
part you need most.
