Urgent Update: Pig Farms and Swine Flu

B'SD

Gosh, It was only two days ago that I shared my thoughts on filthy pig farms as a prime cause for Swine Flu crossing the animal/human barrier. I haven't heard back from medical folks yet (though the CDC indicated interest, via E-mail, in the ideas I'd posed).

Now the Associated Press is sharing evidence that those suspicions might be right on target (can I think and write well about health, or what?!):

Keep washing your hands, avoiding dirty food and surroundings, and stay tuned to health organization updates. And eat certified organic meat, for your health.

Don't Let Cats Make You Crazy!

Sivan 28 5768

I've held back from sharing the information below, concerned that some readers would consider it anti-kitty cat and worth ignoring. But I'm going to forego that concern now. I know of some people who've been badly affected by the filth cats present to human environments.

In brief, America's prestigious Walter Reed Army Institute of Research discovered that cat feces, undercooked beef or pork can literally cause schizophrenia in humans. Click on
Selected Infectious Agents and Risk of Schizophrenia for news released this past January.

(sorry, but the
American Journal of Psychiatry link isn't working so well at this time)

Did you skip that longish article with all the sophisticated medical words? Here's a quick review of it's major points:

1. PEOPLE EXPOSED TO TOXOPLASMA (the bad stuff in cat poo and undercooked meats) HAD A 24 PERCENT HIGHER RISK OF DEVELOPING SCHIZOPHRENIA THAN PEOPLE WHO HADN'T BEEN EXPOSED.

2. The difference is important, according to researchers, because the ability to explain even some of the 2 million cases of schizophrenia in the USA may offer clues to the disease and some possible treatments.

The lesson here is to mind your hygiene inside and outside the kitchen. Feline pets - even housepets kept relatively clean - aren't the only problem. Improperly prepared pork and beef are problems, too.

Do what you can to get rid of the risks.

As in get rid of the kitty (and all the cat poop), which was meant for the wild anyway.

If your children or grandchildren play in sandboxes (where cats LOVE to pee and poop), spend the money to provide sandboxes with snap-down lids for when they're not at play.

And see to it that you only eat properly cooked foods at home and elsewhere.

Need a motive to mind your menu? Americans are puzzled by an outbreak of salmonella that was once thought to be from commercially grown tomatoes.
Investigators aren't so sure about the cause anymore. But it is obvious that you need clean food. Meanwhile, do what you can to protect your health (including your mental health) and that of your loved ones.
