Israel-based Dr Singer-Jordan remarks that "... the salient point in this country and our hospital is that the actual portal of access to the system is through OB/GYN - I don’t admit patients, [I] just do plumbing…"

He alerted that I'd erred a bit with yesterday's post:

"This is known as Interventional Radiology, so the term non- invasive is not quite accurate.

"All those 3 videos are showing the same thing, the injection AFTER embolization when we see the normal blood vessels and no bleeding - they are just at different frame rates. [Note from Yocheved: I'd meant to note that yesterday. I've had several technical difficulties with blogspot, though. I'm keeping the videos up to suit various online needs for speed].

"Although Vancouver is a beautiful city I am actually from England via Edmonton (11 years) and Toronto (11 years) and now Ma'alot (19 years)."

"Placenta Accreta is a condition in which the placenta penetrates abnormally into or beyond the wall of the uterus and can cause catastrophic bleeding when it detaches. It can usually be diagnosed by ultrasound; women with previous Caesarian section are a high risk group.

"To avoid massive bleeding we place tiny balloons in the arteries that supply the uterus immediately before Caesarian section. By inflating the balloons we drastically reduce the bleeding and most times the uterus can be repaired.

"Persistent bleeding or postpartum bleeding from other causes can be treated by embolization - using a small tube inserted through the artery in the groin to inject material directly into the bleeding blood vessels and close them from the inside."

The good doctor (he seems magical!) works with Prof Ofir, the head of the hospital's High Risk Pregnancy unit.

Clinical Trials for HIV adults amd H1N1 Vaccine

Important news for people with HIV:

HIV-infected adults currently are being recruited to participate in a clinical trial of 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine. The study, sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health, will enroll approximately 240 men and women between the ages of 18 and 64.

"People with suppressed immunity caused by conditions such as HIV infection are at increased risk of serious illness from 2009 H1N1 influenza, and should be vaccinated against the H1N1 virus," says NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D.

"However, such immune suppression may hamper the response to influenza vaccines," Dr. Fauci adds. "While people with HIV infection are a high-priority group to receive 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine, the optimal dosage of 2009 H1N1 vaccine for people with HIV infection has not been determined through clinical trials. This study will help address that gap in knowledge."

All study participants will receive two doses of an inactivated 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine, administered approximately 21 days apart. The vaccine is manufactured by Novartis. Half of the volunteers will receive two 15-microgram doses and the other half two 30-microgram doses of the vaccine.

Within each dosage group, volunteers will be further divided into two groups based on their CD4+ T-cell levels. CD4+ T cells are infection-fighting white blood cells that are targeted by HIV. Healthy people usually have between 800 and 1,200 CD4+ T cells per milliliter of blood. Over time, most people with HIV show a drop in CD4+ T-cell counts, though antiretroviral therapy can help restore them to healthy levels.

The trial is being conducted at six sites, including these five NIAID-funded Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Units: Baylor College of Medicine, Houston; Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center; Saint Louis University, Mo.; University of Iowa, Iowa City; and University of Maryland, Baltimore. The University of Washington, Seattle, also is participating in the trial.

Don't Drown the Baby!

"TOO MUCH WATER RAISES SEIZURE RISK IN BABIES
--Breast milk, formula best for hydration"

Hopkins pediatrician and head of the Children's Emergency Department Dr. Allen Walker, M.D., says ""Babies need extra fluids in the hot weather, but straight water is not one of them. "A parent's natural instinct is to give the baby water to prevent dehydration, but too much water can disrupt the delicate balance in a baby's body, leading to water intoxication. Before you know it, the baby is seizing."

Walker says that ADDING WATER TO FORMULA IS DANGEROUS. Babies under a year of age need Mom's milk or formula. Straight water can lead straight to the emergency room - NOT what the baby needs!

SYMPTOMS OF WATER INTOXICATION in infants include:

* Changes in Mental Status, i.e., unusual irritability or drowsiness

* Low Body Temperature, usually 97 degrees or less

* Facial Swelling or Puffiness

* Seizures

"Though any infant who consumes too much water can suffer water intoxication, the risk is highest among children who are already dehydrated, typically after a bout with viral or bacterial infections that cause vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms of dehydration in a young child include dry mouth, increased thirst, irritability and reduced sweating and urination. An easy way to spot dehydration is if a child has fewer than three wet diapers in 24 hours," Walker says.
