If You Have Periodontal Disease - Gingivitis, You Might Also Have...

B'SD

My informative face-to-face interview with research scientist Shiela Strauss PhD took place last week (I'm still a journalist, folks). Now I'm preparing my feature story about her proof of the HIGH likelihood that people with Gingivitis a.k.a Periodontal Disease already have, or will soon develop, Diabetes.

Yes, you read that correctly. Now read
Study Finds Over 90% of People with Gum Disease Are at Risk for Diabetes; Concludes That at Least Half Could Be Screened in Dental Offices, then call your general practitioner to request a Fasting Blood Sugar test. Untreated Diabetes can be life-threatening.

The facts are in: Gingivitis a.k.a Periodontal Disease is clearly related to having Diabetes, even Gestational Diabetes. What's more troubling is that the reverse is true, too. My feature story will explain the bi-directional realtionship as I present the methodology used to prove it.

By the way, Dr. Strauss endorsed the 2007 print edition of It's MY Crisis and I'll Cry if I Need To, as an NIH researcher. She admires the updated E-book, too.

EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge. And if you have PD or Gingivitis, make that FBS appointment FAST!

Many diabetics don't need to read this headline to know it's true:

The good news is that EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with Medical Challenge references someone who helps diabetics to heal. And the book includes her contact information!

Enjoy your reading time ;^ )

I have a question for you, readers: "What's the one question that none of your medical professionals answer, to your great disappointment?"

PS - the next time I post will be in the new Jewish year of 5770. Shana tova umetuka (a sweet new year) to my Jewish readers!

Diabetes and Pregnancy News

B'SD

6 Av 5768

Check out the "Comments" for the August 5 update about Postpartum Depression. Tiffani made my day when she let me know that my efforts are helping still another group of people with medical challenges and crises: pregnant and new moms plus their families!

Here's more good news about pregnancy from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK):

NIDDK RESOURCE HELPS GUIDE WOMEN WITH DIABETES THROUGH HEALTHY PREGNANCIES

Pregnancy is a time of great excitement and anticipation. It also can be a time of anxiety, especially for women with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Pregnancy in women who have diabetes is automatically considered high-risk. But a new, easy-to-read booklet has information to help women with diabetes experience safe, healthy pregnancies.

You can get the illustrated "For Women with Diabetes: Your Guide to Pregnancy" 44-page booklet with information about checking and controlling blood glucose -- also called blood sugar levels, maintaining a healthy diet, staying physically active and taking tests and diabetes medications during pregnancy.

The importance of planning for pregnancy and getting blood glucose levels under control before pregnancy to decrease the risk of birth defects associated with diabetes is emphasized. Logs for recording daily blood glucose and ketone levels, food intake and physical activity are included.

Produced by the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (NDIC) information dissemination service of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) at the National Institutes of Health, the new booklet is available at
www.diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/pregnancy.

A Spanish-language version of the booklet will be available soon. Order a free copy at
http://www.catalog.niddk.nih.gov/. Copies also can be ordered by calling the Clearinghouse at 1-800-860-8747 or writing to the NDIC at 1 Information Way, Bethesda MD 20892-3560.

The Clearinghouse also has an easy-to-read booklet about gestational diabetes and many other resources about diabetes in English and Spanish. The A-to-Z list of topics and titles at www.diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/a-z.asp lists these resources in alphabetical order.

All NDIC publications are available free of charge.

Here's another tactic for managing diabetes with pregnancy SIMPLY - with your hands and voice:

EFT, Emotional Freedom techniques.

You can learn about EFT's non-invasive, drug-free and often astonishingly effective results for many medical and emotional problems at
