While we're on the topic of dealing withSTRESS,I hope that you'll benefit from the heartwarming message below.
B'SD 5 Elul, 5775 Let's keep focusing on resilience for a bit. The EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge book and this blog have explained how to lower your pain with the Pain-o-Meter technique, laughter and more. Here's something from today's headlines. It's based on a sound principle. See if it works for you:
If I understand the premise of EFT correctly, it has much in common with the techniques described in the article. So do other de-stressing strategies. Speaking of stress, yesterday I endured my semi-annual vision exam at the eye clinic of the hospital where'd I'd had life-saving brain surgery 10 years ago. The agony of anticipation about scary news at such exams long ago turned into wonder, delighted laughter and spiritual insight. My vision, once written off as "impossible to recover," has made enduring progress for a decade. Not steady progress, rather the stuff that makes medical professionals and merely human me realize that GOD is controlling the result of my efforts, I recently began following a macrobiotic menu, in the hopes that the focus on "Balance" could well serve my once traumatized, ever-recovering brain. I even invited you to share a delicious macrobiotic dinner with me, so to speak. Perhaps macrobiotic menus have promoted the phenomenon recorded in yesterday's findings: My double vision is abating. I see a binocular "picture" from time to time, with increasing frequency and over increasing amounts of time. I plan to celebrate the development at a gourmet macrobiotic dinner with some friends, next week. Stay tuned. Sometimes the efforts we make pay off in surprising, unpredictable, unforeseen ways. Today's the last day of Hanuka/Chanuka. I'm wistful for it to linger. The 8-day holiday is about problems and goals, raw courage, and leadership. Lots of life lessons are packed into those historical days. For example: You know about the male Maccabees. Click on What Do Jewish Women Have to Do with Chanuka? to learn more.
Okay, back to today. I decided to prepare some Hanuka food this past week. My arms are tired from hand-grating potatoes and onions, then frying them into luscious livivot aka latke treats in a cast iron skillet.
Making the potato pancakes, then cleaning the mess (a BIG, messy mess), were goals and problems met and solved with some tried and true solutions.
Now let's digress into some medical matters. Those can be a bunch of problems and a "How do I - or you - meet important goals?" headache of a goal to meet!
Suffering tends to wear us down, along with our thinking skills. You know all about it. What you might not know is how to overcome the sorrow, fear, anger, forgetfulness, temper tantrums and other emotional issues so that you can think clearly again. Your emotions are one thing. But life, especially a medical or mental health issue life, can be complicated by the emotions of other people, too. The emotions of your family members, colleagues, and friends are a whole 'nuther universe. Let's deal all of that, one person at a time: You, you and you.
There is guidance about how to deal with all the problematic people in your medical life throughout

B'SD 9 Adar, 5773 One of the complications about having a medical, disability or mental health problem is that people tend to run out of sympathy for the sufferers over the long term. It is the sufferers responsibility, and opportunity, to improve their response(s) to their dilemmas and lingering issues. That's what maturity is all about. Mature people make cultured, reasonable responses to their overall situations and to the specifics of their problems. Whining is not an adult response to stress. Pity parties will happen from time to time, though. That's life, and a signal to strengthen your sense of self and inner strength. But what can you do when criticism is aimed at struggling you as you work on mastering that cultured, mature response to whatever's ailing you? Share this story with the critic.
A young lady confidently walked around the room while leading and explaining stress management to an audience while holding a raised glass of water. Everyone knew she
was going to ask the ultimate question, "Half empty or half full?" She fooled
them all. "How heavy is this glass of water?" she asked with a
smile.
Audience members called out answers ranging from 8 ounces to 20 ounces. She replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I
hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have
an ache in my right arm. "If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an
ambulance. In each case it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the
heavier it becomes. And that's the way it is with stress. If we
carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes
increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on. "As with the glass of
water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again.
When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden - holding stress longer
and better after each time we practiced our coping strategies." [Back to me, Yocheved, now] Now you can look your critic(s) in the eye and say "I'm doing the best I can given the situation. I'm making efforts to deal with stress better over time. I'd appreciate your patience and compassion the whole time.
