Increase, Even Triple the Odds of Surviving Heart Attacks!
16 Adar 5770
MAYO Clinic's Doctors Tyler Vadeboncoeur & Bentley Bobrow announce a new way to increase the chances for adults in cardiac arrest to survive the problem.
After my latest eye exam today, I wonder if anyone on my medical team is going to need some help breathing pretty soon. Further improvements in my vision and eye health were recorded today.
A film will soon be made, at the internal level, of my eyes functioning. I expect it will become a teaching tool that demonstrates a most unusual recovery. I'm not quite at the 5th anniversary of the surgery to remove the brain tumor that almost killed me after causing sudden blindness and other medical crises. But it's gonna be one fun celebration, I bet ;^ )

Touch Your Toes to SAVE Your Life!
7 Tevet 5770
Friends find it amusing that when I stretch, I go a-l-l-l- the way, touching my toes (no, I don't bend my knees) then reaching for the sky. I follow it up with criss-crossed fingers arched upward as my arms push them skyward. Next, my hands go palms up as I pull on my spine for all it's worth. Oooh, that easy Yoga move gets out some kinks so easily!
Here's some food for thought about cardiac health:

Female Hearts Need Different Medication, Surgical Instrument Sizes, and...
14 Shvat 5769
I've blogged about female cardiac health before and I'm still puzzled at the enduring lack of awareness about a woman's need for medical care tailored to the size and chemistry of her heart. The medical world, and the world at large, overlook some critically important realities about female cardiac health. The information is not top-secret, it is in the public domain and horribly overlooked! necessary information
"Women must get serious about heart disease and take control of their heart health, starting at an early age," said Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D., director of NHLBI (the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute). "Younger women need to take steps now, like eating a healthy diet and being physically active, to help prevent heart disease later."
However, even with awareness on the rise, many women do not take this message seriously or personally. One-third of women still underestimate their own personal risk of getting heart disease, and too many -- one in four women -- still die from heart disease. "Understanding your personal risk of heart disease really matters. Having just one risk factor for heart disease -- like high blood pressure or being overweight -- doubles your chance of developing heart disease. And the alarming fact is that more than 80 percent of midlife women have one or more of the risk factors," said Dr. Nabel.
Here's why I'm so irked at the high level of society-wide ignorance about female heart health: the necessary information is in the public domain, not hidden away in a drawer!
But too many medical "professionals" IGNORE THE INFORMATION!!!!
I wrote about some ground-breaking research and revelations about female cardiac health several years ago. In brief:
- Women need smaller surgical instruments since our hearts are smaller than those of men.
- Women have different symptoms of heart disease and heart attacks than men.
- Female bodies require different medications and in different amounts than men.
- Medical research about heart health too often fails to include significant numbers of (or any!) women among the research cases!

Young Athletes at Risk for... Heart Attacks?!

15 Iyar
If you're a parent or older teen, you might know the drill: Coach gets his athletes out there, running them hard in the hot sun. The guys feel like they're dying of thirst. They ache all over and some team members have headaches the size of Texas. Everybody wants to rest. The shrill whistle screams "No Time Out." Then one of the players collapses on the field. Ambulances arrive as a lot of lip-biting goes on around the unconscious victim.

Wanna reverse that scenario and prevent unnecessary heartache? You can.
Be aware the some African-American players are at special risk of death from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy - oversized, too-thick heart muscle. It can kill. The victim experiences a sudden cardiac arrest or a potentially fatal heart arrythmia after intense physical activity. Their heart is not beating correctly and the body suffers severely.
The problem was hiding in plain view all along. One very wrong combination of exertion, genetic disadvantage and bad timing is all it takes to reveal the facts.
"Many cases go undiagnosed because the young athletes' healthy appearance and peak physical condition may mask their underlying sickness. Experts estimate that one in 500 Americans has undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. But African-Americans are more vulnerable, with two to three times the rate of sudden cardiac death than in whites," says Johns Hopkins cardiologist Theodore Abraham, M.D.
Get your adolescent athlete, of any skin color, into a cardiologist's office for a full workup and screening, and especially if that teen player is black-skinned.
TESTS SHOULD INCLUDE:
1. Cardiac Ultrasound or Echocardiogram - to measure heart size and pumping function, including blood volume, and to check for faulty valves
2. Electrocardiogram, or EKG, to assess the heart's electrical rhythms
How important is this, really? In 2004, the International Olympic Committee recommended that all athletes be EKG-tested every two years for potential heart abnormalities.
I wish you a safe, healthy summer of fun activity.
