Hug Time!

B'SD

Adar 4, 5773

Today's Valentine's Day around the world, though it's not celebrated by Torah-minded Jews. No matter your religion, that doesn't stop some people from feeling wistful about wanting to love someone else, to  be loved or to love yourself on a deep, spiritual level.

The whole concept of love is multifaceted. Wanna take some of the mystery out of it?

Rabbi Noah Weinberg z'l defines love as "The pleasure we experience when we identify someone with their virtues, while accepting them with their faults." (OK, singles and everyone else, heed the life-lesson and end some self-inflicted misery).

Worried that you're at odds with
someone you're trying to love
despite hardships between you?

Laugh. The experience can promote a sense of joy that turns the sense of terror and concern in our hearts and minds into harmless stuff. Your fears can melt away with the sense of restored happiness. You can even learn to laugh at them.

Go out and find something to enjoy. Listen to silly comic routines (try The 2000-year Old Man for starters), rejoice over someone's victories (babies have them each time they reach milestones), and coax yourself to be willing to loosen up a bit.

Competent therapists can help you if necessary.

Quality Spouse Time: Giver Her a Delicous TREAT for Valentine's Day!

B'SD

9 Adar 5771

Ladies, you'll love this blogpost. It's delicious!

Get your husband to read this with you (or be subtle as a brick: leave this on his monitor so he can read it alone):

Mahalabeya is a light, delightful dessert served in a cup or bowl (halab is the Arabic word for milk). Here's how to prepare it:

1 Cup milk
1 Tablespoon cornstarch
1 Tablespoon sugar

Dissolve sugar and cornstarch in the milk, with a wooden spoon. Heat the well-blended ingredients in an enamelware, Pyrex-type or porcelain saucepan almost to a boil. Turn off the heat. The mixture will thicken on its own.

Take the saucepan off the fire as soon as it boils. Let it cool gently on the countertop/a trivot while you gently, gently stir the foamy concoction with the wooden spoon. Add a dash of organic rosewater, a bit of shaved coconut flakes, vanilla and/or some raisins.

Play with the recipe over time.
Eat the luscious results warm or after refrigeration, served in a cup or bowl (pre-warmed if you wish).

Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on top. Decorate the surface with a light rain of freshly ground nuts (cashews are wonderful for this recipe!). Place a dainty teasoon on the saucer.

Serve the still-warm drink to the woman you love.

This recipe is sure to turn almost any day into a cuddle-fest. Here's to your emotional health!

Female Hearts Need Different Medication, Surgical Instrument Sizes, and...

B'SD

14 Shvat 5769

I've blogged about female cardiac health before and I'm still puzzled at the enduring lack of awareness about a woman's need for medical care tailored to the size and chemistry of her heart. The medical world, and the world at large, overlook some critically important realities about female cardiac health. The information is not top-secret, it is in the public domain and horribly overlooked!

That ignorance can kill you, if you're a woman!

I hope to end the ignorance to some degree with today's blogpost.

Here are are some snippets of
necessary information
for women worldwide,
from the Heart Truth Campaign:

"Women must get serious about heart disease and take control of their heart health, starting at an early age," said Elizabeth G. Nabel, M.D., director of NHLBI (the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute). "Younger women need to take steps now, like eating a healthy diet and being physically active, to help prevent heart disease later."

A new survey, conducted in January 2009 shows that 65 percent of women are aware that heart disease is their No.1 killer, a slight increase from 2008. [NOTE FROM YOCHEVED: Ladies, this means that most women fail to understand that 1. female hearts are very physically different from male hearts and therefore have different medical and physical needs, AND that 2. women need to learn how to care for their physical hearts so they can live healthier lives.]

However, even with awareness on the rise, many women do not take this message seriously or personally. One-third of women still underestimate their own personal risk of getting heart disease, and too many -- one in four women -- still die from heart disease. "Understanding your personal risk of heart disease really matters. Having just one risk factor for heart disease -- like high blood pressure or being overweight -- doubles your chance of developing heart disease. And the alarming fact is that more than 80 percent of midlife women have one or more of the risk factors," said Dr. Nabel.

Here's why I'm so irked at the high level of society-wide ignorance about female heart health: the necessary information is in the public domain, not hidden away in a drawer!

But too many medical "professionals" IGNORE THE INFORMATION!!!!

I wrote about some ground-breaking research and revelations about female cardiac health several years ago. In brief:

  • Women need smaller surgical instruments since our hearts are smaller than those of men.

  • Women have different symptoms of heart disease and heart attacks than men.

  • Female bodies require different medications and in different amounts than men.

  • Medical research about heart health too often fails to include significant numbers of (or any!) women among the research cases!

If your female heart is not healthy,
then you owe it to yourself to hire
the most compassionate, capable,
well-informed cardiologist and cardiological surgeon
possible.

Your LIFE depends on them!
