2 Wheelchairs + 1 Wedding = A Match Made in Heaven on Earth

As you'll read in

"The purpose of this workbook is to be a tool for strengthening your resolve. Emotions go on a roller coaster when a person learns of the medical and/or emotional/spiritual crisis that seems to be engulfing them. That’s a sign of being human, of being normal. Despite your yearning to master and to control the situation you’re in – or even to get rid of it, reality dictates that you remain calm and logical. The temptations to go ballistic are innumerable. We all suffer with that problem.

The mark of a refined human being, a "decent person," is that he or she behaves pleasantly and intelligently despite the pain, setbacks and sadness of the problem in their life. In the 21st century, however, a huge sense of confusion clouds our thinking: we became used to instant solutions back in the 20th century.

Technological advances gave us instantly cooked food zapped in microwaves. We advanced from s-l-o-w snail mail or telegram-facilitated communication to real-time Faxes, Instant Messaging, quickly received and responded to E-mail, cell phones, PDAs, blackberries and more. We lost the sense of having to wait for results.

That loss of perspective affects our understanding of emotional restraint and spiritual growth. They develop with the repetition of polite behavior despite inner turmoil. Time and patience are crucial factors for becoming refined individuals. They’re critical coping tools for medical challenges.

You turn every mistake into a blessing when you decide that it will not weigh you down and choose to use it to rise to greater heights. Growth means rising above present limitations, after all."

Watch these ideals come to life with people who live them without ever having read the EMPOWER Yourself book.

Welcome to Haveil Havalim Roundup #357!

The past week held Yom HaZikaron, Israel's national day of mourning for its soldiers and defenseless innocents murdered by terrorists, followed by the Yom Ha'Atzmaut day of joyous celebration for Israel's national independence. Israel is a home for Jews to cherish. I was so caught up in things that I did not blog much.

Passover/Pesakh had already been an emotional experience that remains with me until today. During the times when we focus on personal thoughts at the seder, I kept thinking "This an apropos time for Israelis to dismiss the appeasement fantasies of the kneset, the UN's opinion on anything (care to repair life in the Sudan or UAE, hmmm?), and the USA's messed-up take on Middle East life - let alone MSM's."

We'd spent the seder night recalling how only HaShem (GOD for non-Hebrew speakers) saves us time and again, and that politicians plus other meddlers are part of our problems. I'd like every Israeli to end their subscriptions to depressing, con job newspapers, pray harder, do more mitzvot, convince chutznikim to make aliya already (empty promises belie inactions) and to watch H's promises come true (Mashiakh must arrive on the scene when all the world's Jews are in Israel as Commanded).

Okay, on with the HH Blog Carnival!

Marriage is a mighty controversial word in the Orthodox Jewish world. Well, "marriage crisis" or "singles' crisis" might be better phrases for capturing the scope of the problem. A BIG argument about that debate broke out in The Jewish Press; click this Tyranny of Beauty link to learn about that (it became a BIGGER mess at this link) and on Gila Manolson's wonderful response link.

Here's is Yiddishe Cup's critical contribution to the HH blog carnival today: 1. Shidduch Myth #1 Just because a man doesn't want to go out with you, doesn't mean he's gay. and 2. What Shidduch Crisis? Ladies, we're on to you!

While we're on the topic of truth in advertising, check out Ruth Palatnik's plea to end fraudulent advertising: No Shortcuts

You can read Dr. Yoel Finkelman's review/critique of a recently published book. It's topic: Masculinity in the Orthodox Jewish milieu. Dr. Finkelman is the author of Strictly Kosher Reading: Popular Literature and the Condition of Contemporary Orthodoxy. For those of us who take Torah and mitzvot seriously, including parshat Kedoshim (in which GOD rules out homosexual activity), let's up our spiritual ante. Am Yisrael is in DEEP doo-doo !

I'm looking forward to the next HH Blog Carnival on May 06 2012 at Ruth Palatnik's Beneath the Wings blog.

4 Steps to Getting Unstuck!

B'SD

21 Cheshvan 5771

Pretty splashy image up there, huh? I hope to fill you with as much optimism as that picture implies.

Why?

Jews around the world are reflecting on the Jewish New Year season that passed last month. It seems that everybody else is looking forward to January, but all of us are worrying about the daunting lead-up to it: Thanksgiving season. Xmas parties. Kwaanza fests. Bills. More bills. Tempers. Fourth quarter reports. Bosses cut losses by firing staff. Fear. Panic.

Here's some nifty advice I found in a recent Psych Central Newsletter. I blended it in a way to help you more than the original presentation might:

Here are 4 steps to get unstuck:

Name the stuckness – In other words, simply say to yourself, this is the feeling of being stuck

Find the physical sensation – Take a brief scan of your body and become aware of where you notice the greatest sensation. Get a sense of how large it is, it’s shape, does it have a color? Get curious about it. Getting curious helps us break outside of the box.

See choices – Ask yourself the question, is there another way I can see the situation I’m in? What choices do I have here? See if you can do this without judgment, more as a brainstorm.

If your marriage is taking a beating from you and/or your spouse's reactions to life's little and major stresses, read How to Beat the Odds: Tips from the Very Married.

Take action – Put one foot in front of the other and begin engaging in one of those choices.

Even if the choice doesn’t stick at first, know that this practice in itself is training your mind to get unstuck from the cycles it gets caught in. When you notice yourself wandering into past habitual ways of being, know that is expected and just gently guide yourself back.
