A Medical Ethics Issue that MUST be Resolved to Serve Humanity

B'SD

19 Av 5770

Whew, it's been a busy week. I was interviewed for a news article about how people benefit from my books and coaching, plus I'm teaching Social Media Savvy to some interested business people while spending time with friends visiting from another country.

Here's some food for thought I'd like to share with you over the weekend:

How would you feel
if your life were
threatened by disease
and doctors refused
to share your tissue
samples with
researchers seeking
a way to save you?

The hospital administrators and relevant doctors cited in the article below, and others like them, are missing a superb health-promoting and public relations opportunity. They could develop the legal means of sharing patient tissues in an effort to preserve and to improve a person's life.

I'm awestruck at the failure to appreciate this! Lawyers could perform some public service by lending their skills to solving this heart-breaking dilemma.

Let me know what you think after you click on Niki Perry's story at
Patients, hospitals wrestle over tumor tissue.

Er, no, I cannot explain the odd color of the patient's "hair."

Solutions for Childhood Insomnia

B'SD

16 5770

Kids have been running around playing, making mischief and having fun since the dawn of history. Parents are relieved when they finally get to bed and sleep off a hard day, let alone their children ;^ )

But something odd happened at the dawn of the Digital Age. Children stopped moving about so much. Why? They sat still to play video games, iPods, iPads, with cell phone calls and texting, and PC nonsense (including hours of sit-still digital TV and movies). Scholastic scores began dropping in percentages reflecting time spent awry. Young brains and bodies became flabby, not developed to maximum potential.

The lessons of the "Babysitter"
Television Age went unheeded.

Kids konked out, losing more sleep as time went by, especially if they've had PCs and cellphones in their bedrooms. Articles such Insomnia in Kids on the Rise began filling air waves and pixels.

Non-developing muscles, bones and brains were not feeling tired from hard days at sedentary play. Young minds overstimulated by sugary short-term energy foods, counter-productive access to gadgets, games and pointless communications began sitting atop underused bodies. Too much fast food piled on the calories as the rates of obese and diabetic pediatric cases scared the willies out of medical professionals.

The above is a prescription
for misfired biological signals.

Here are the Solutions for Insomnia in children and adults: STOP eating processed foods and move around more. Close your eyes and enjoy restful sleep when the sky goes dark. The world will continue spinning on its access if your children do not play one more game or text another message or make a cell phone call.

Eat simple, organic foods high in nourishment, flavor and preparation ease. Processed
foods are fulll of phthalates (found in plastics, shampoos, etc.), pesticides (weed-killer reaches your dinner plate in trace amounts your gut just does not need), lead, mercury and food colors. This blog and I already warned you of the xenoestrogens in expensive hygiene products and some foods, They are wreaking havoc with body functions.

Need a one-phrase concept that describes the above? SELF DISCIPLINE.

Parents, the purpose of long childhoods is so you have time to teach your offspring repeated lessons they need to know for satisying, productive adulthoods. Re-read this post as often as you wish and get busy. Your children need you to mold them into well-educated, decent people who don't need medical attention for unwarranted lifestyle mistakes.

All of you will be sleeping deeply and regularly in the foreseable future.

Do Hospice Workers HASTEN a Patient's Death?

B'SD

14 Av 5770

I'd written feature stories about hospice services in the years when they were relatively new on the medical scene. I can't hotlink you to the stories because they preceded the now-popular Internet. But I can let you know that I wondered about the downside of people who only work with pending deaths. Psychology has a way of messing up the best psychological wiring and minds. Deeply good character traits developed on purpose have a way of preventing that from happening.

I offer you a cautionary tale, written by a former neighbor in the USA. I know her thinking and speaking manner. It is clearly portrayed in this essay:
Angel of mercy or angel of death? A cautionary tale.

As It's MY Crisis! And I'll Cry If I Need To: EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge and this blog caution you,

You need to consult board certified
medical and mental health professionals
in all matters relating to your health,
and for suspected symptoms of illness
requiring diagnosis or medical
attention (including simple first aid).
For spiritual matters, consult
sensibly behaved clergy who
demonstrate complete respect for
your wellbeing.

There are many fine, morally grounded hospices and hospice workers in the world. But you will be wise to observe small details. Look for consistency, genuine versus merely professed compassion, and ethics in hospice and all medical settings. THAT can serve your interests and your loved ones' very well. And, it's a way to EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge.

Sweeten Your Indoor Life in 1 Simple Step

B'SD

Summer's hot and humid, the thunderstorms messed up your barbecue. You just don't want to risk your health recovery/coping process on severe weather conditions. Here's a simple 1-step solution: Indoor Beach Party!

Grab your gear: sunglasses, beach towels, tan lotion and food. Set it up indoors and play some funky music while you enjoy the silly setting. Arrange for someone to prepare barbecue'd food and feel better fast.

My classmates and I did this in college and it truly is fun for people on the mend - and everybody else. Yep, college. Not a waste of time as too many critics feared ; ^ )

Seriously, readers, I've witnessed Recreation Therapists in medical institutions do this sort of activity and the staff, patients and visitors ate it up with glee.

How to Create a BEAUTIFUL FUTURE for Someone Who Needs It

B'SD

9 Av 5770

Today is a very sad day on the Jewish calendar, Tisha B'Av. It commemorates the destruction (yet again) of Jewish lives and our holy Temple/Bet HaMikdash by people who despise morality.

However, Torah-observant Jews are ever-optimistic. We believe in The One Above's promise of a blessed future.

I am just now
experiencing
evidence of that
beautiful potential.

I'm weeping in relief and pleasure at kindnesses coordinated in a hurry. They're helping some families to recover from their devastating medical and emotional situations in different spots on the globe. I initiated relevant contacts for all concerned and hope to teach the world at large:

ONE PERSON
can accomplish a lot!

Reflect on what
the parties need,
how you can help to
meet those needs,
and DO THAT.

It's not about genius.

It's about compassion,
a careful assessment
of what's needed,
of what can be done
and
of how to do more.

Create a beautiful future
for someone who needs it.

Let's call the phenomenon

News YOU NEED to Protect Your Feet and Knees

B'SD

7 Tamuz 5770

I'm sharing this update to clue you in that human feet and knees need more than well-fitting shoes. They need good sense.

While racing around one early morning last week, preparing for an especially hectic day packed with appointments, I chose not to wear slippers or shoes during my "Gotta get dressed, pack my papers, water bottle and wallet" haste. So, naturally, I slammed my foot into a metal doorjamb, busting a baby toe in the process.

OW.

I incidentally met my podiatrist a while later at the bank. He looked quizzcally at my limping self entering the waiting line. I said, "Busted the baby toe, bandaged it to the next toe in a secure manner and now it's splinted." He winced and let me know there's nothing further he can do about the situation.

So, in my gracious acceptance of physical realities, I offer you some necessary "knews" about feet, toes, knees and shoes. sigh...

How to Make Your Medical Setbacks WORK for You!

B'SD

4 Av 5770

Medical setbacks can unravel your employment hopes, dreams and realities in awful ways. As a woman who has recovered from not one but several brain tumors and treatments to get rid of them, lots of physical and occupational therapy to recover from that, then a crushed elbow on my dominant arm and MORE physical-occupational therapy, I know from deep inside what you're feeling about medically-induced unemployment problems.

Today's post is for helping you to see things another way, and productively too. Here's a message I shared on LinkedIn, about unemployment problems for immigrants who don't speak Hebrew at all or even passably well. Please apply my insights to YOUR employment picture and make it as productive as possible:

Richard your comment about Torah Codes caught my attention. I wrote the first two installments of an espionage trilogy based on nevua [ed: Biblical prohecy] and Torah Codes in the USA. Part 2 was greatly revised and published soon after my aliya [ed: arrival in Israel], after I met with some Torah Code experts who shared information I had not known before. I had decided not to publish Part Three before my publisher asked me in some alarm if realize how closely headlines are following my plotline. I do not want readers to fear that I give ideas to bad guys, and sighed, "Now you know why the last part of the story isn't coming out."

Why share this with the list? Because I cured my unemployment problem with self-employment by re-writing the previously completed Part Two manuscript immediately after my aliya [ed: arrival in Israel]. I supported myself with odd jobs while advancing my Hebrew skills. I now assist people in medical and governmental settings (yeeesss, I have loads of patience and a keen insight into how to get productive, effective services from civil servants aka pakidim. I don't offer gurantees, but I have won some amazing successes for myself and other people).

I still dabble in journalism and focus on writing book reviews, a sedentary, calm activity for one de-frazzled chick trying to keep up with Israeli life. I provide writing services to clients, including occasional, small translation work.

Richard's right: think out of the box. Options exist such as Anglo employers here in Israel; offering goods & services to the Anglo Israeli commmunity; learning new skills, etc. All that is good for brain health and agility: my book and blog provide documented evidence of this.

Do things to promote your joi de vivre: treat yourself to something you don't usually induge in such as a food or activity. Listen to energizing, soothing and inspirational music, videos, art shows, etc. Be good to yourself and prevent the buildup of a negative mindset - THAT is a job prospects killer.

I'm working on two prospective employment models myself: 1) Launching the Refua Radio Show to help cholim [ed: ill people] worldwide with called-in requests for information and inspiration (I need sponsorships from medical businesses paying for ads and a means of broadcasting the show) 2) Creating and broadcasting humorous Public Service Announcements about how to behave with refined manners in Israel (giving your bus seat to pregnant women and older folks who need to sit down, not biking or scootering in front of pedestrians, providing all relevant information - maybe an insight or two - to clients and customers who prefer not to remain clueless... ). I handle scriptwriting. I need investors and accolades from public institutions before those PSAs go live.

The energy generated by pursuing and refining my goals is fun to experience and lots more appealing as a conversation-starter than "Omigawd, I still don't have a job."

Not too shabby, huh? GO for it!

Yocheved Golani

Readers, rethink what you CAN do, despite your medical setbacks. Use computers as paralyzed people do (wands, blinks, etc.). Offer your insights to disability organizations, create plans of action for making employment possible and pleasant given medical circumstances.

I did everything I wrote of AFTER becoming legally blind, busted bones and all. My sight is still not considered normal and I function to the best of my personal ability. Mimic me. Let me know how you succeed and I just might let you guest-post on this blog.

And for goodness' sake, read my book to learn about organizations that HELP disabled people to live fuller lives ;^ )

One WONDERFUL WAY to Protect Your Feet!

B'SD

3 Av 5770

Did you know that 80% of us develop some type of foot imbalance by age 20, and that almost everybody has a problem by age 40?

Your podiatrist can explain some of the causes (mine is unique to people with vision problems and WOW can I wobble!). Diabetics and people with less than optimal blood circulation especially need to focus on foot problem prevention.

The good news is that
a few excellent
preventative measures exist!

Keep your feet in great shape by wearing well-fitting shoes with low heels. Women, be especially careful in selecting footwear. Banana-toe shoes are dangerous; a built-in tripping mechanism. Long, skinny heels are not effective balancing mechanisms, either. It is not beautiful to break your bones or to bear bruises with something like this:

Women need thicker, low-heel pumps with rounded toes to prevent many foot problems. Colors, textures and materials abound for style-conscious wearing. The improved balance you'll have will make your stride more graceful. Isn't that a beautiful thing?

Cosmetic foot surgery such as toe tucks, heel narrowing, etc. are expensive ways of paying someone to maim you. If The One Above blessed you with body parts that work, use them instead of lopping them off for whimsical reasons you might regret later.

Guys, keep using those sensible lace-ups with ample room for your toes, heels and movement.

Well-fitting sneakers for sports and walking are increasingly acceptable at workplaces where bosses appreciate having you show up each day without complaining about foot pain. Invest in a quality pair to last you a while.

Air out all footwear for about 24 hours
between wearings no matter
who you are or what you wore.
That prevents odor and fungus problems.

Here's What Happened While I was Away from Your Monitor...

B'SD

1 Av 5770

Sorry for my recent absence, readers. A PC hijack/virus load on my PC knocked me out of cyberspace for a while. I have some catching up to do. I hope to begin posting health-oriented updates later this week. Meanwhile, I offer the health-promoting suggestion below.

Since many of us sit down for much of our lives, I offer this cardio-beneficial tip with despairing dieters and anyone else living sedentary lives: Walk UP the stairs instead of using escalators or elevators (but not in safety-challenged shopping malls). Place only the first half of each foot on every step, letting your heel hang in the air. The aerobic "push" you invest to keep moving skyward burns calories. This can be quite a relief to cramped legs. It also fends off DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) after long flights, sitting at your PC for hours at a time, and too much TV. It's good for your heart, thighs, and sense of success.

People in wheelchairs, on bedrest or simply refraining from over-exertion can ask their medical team about helpful calorie-burning and muscle-building exercises that you can do while seated. Occupational and physical therapists probably have wonderful can-do ideas for you.

To your optimal health,
