Seeking Families with Children Who Have Fanconi Anemia

B'SD

8 Tishrei 5772

Today's blogpost is a 2-parter. The first part is a plea for communication about coping with Fanconi Anemia:

From: Beineinu <beineinu@beineinu.org>
Date: Wed, Oct 5, 2011 at 8:32 AM
Subject: Beineinu Parent match--Fanconi Anemia--PLEASE FORWARD!!
To: Beineinu <beineinu@beineinu.org>

 HELP ANOTHER FAMILY------
PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO YOUR ENTIRE CONTACT LIST

Dear "Beineinu Family", Thanks to all of you, we have been able to make many successful parent matches between families dealing with the effects of their children's diagnoses.  This is especially helpful for those families dealing with the devastating effects of some of the rarer disorders. We have received a request from parents looking to talk to another family dealing with "FANCONI ANEMIA", which is a genetic disorder causing bone marrow failure, kidney, heart, gastrointestinal or bladder abnormalities, arm and finger deformities (such as misshapen or missing fingers, underdeveloped or missing forearm bone), light brown birthmarks, and short stature.

Children with fanconi anemia usually need to undergo bone marrow transplants due to bone marrow failure, and are at higher risk of cancer.

If you know of someone matching this description, please ask the family if they are willing to talk to another family dealing with the same issue.  They are looking for the information and support that only another family can give. The requesting family talks English and some Hebrew.  They are willing to call or email anywhere in the world. If you can help, please contact Golda@Beineinu.org. We will forward the information to the requesting family.

Thank you again for all of the help that you have given so far.  May Hashem grant you many years of good health for your entire families. Golda Turner

Would You Believe THIS Medical Malpractice Story?

B'SD

7 Iyar 5770

"Would You Believe THIS Medical Malpractice Story? "

That's a question I hear often on my speaking tours. And yes, I tend to believe them: Severe pains that turned into undiagnosed appendicitis leading to a burst appendix. A systemic blood infection that led to the loss of corneas and then to lifelong vision problems. An overlooked pneumonia infection in a helpless infant who then suffered respiratory problems. His poorly oxygenated body led to the loss of a tiny hand and fingers that would never stroke mommy's face or hold a toy.

I could go on but you get the idea. You probably know of a medical horror story or two.

Want to ease the pain and suffering?

SOAR with the Eagles!

B'SD

12 Cheshvan 5770

I received a charming story on E-mail and decided to share it with you. It's delicious food for thought for nourishing you this weekend. And beyond ;^ )

Ducks Quack, Eagles Soar!!!

No one can make you serve customers well. That's because great service is a choice.

Harvey Mackay tells a wonderful story about a cab driver who proved this point. He was waiting in line for a ride at the airport. When a cab pulled up, the first thing Harvey noticed was that the taxi was polished to a bright shine. Smartly dressed in a white shirt, black tie, and freshly pressed black slacks, the cab driver jumped out and rounded the car to open the back passenger door for Harvey. He handed my friend a laminated card and said: "I'm Wally, your driver. While I'm loading your bags in the trunk I'd like you to read my mission statement.'

Taken aback, Harvey read Wally's Mission Statement:

"To get my customers to their destination in
the quickest, safest & cheapest way possible
in a friendly environment."

This blew Harvey away. Especially when he noticed that the inside of the cab matched the outside. Spotlessly clean!

As he slid behind the wheel, Wally asked, "Would you like a cup of coffee? I have a thermos of regular and one of decaf."

Harvey said jokingly, "No, I'd prefer a soft drink."

Wally smiled and replied, "No problem. I have a cooler up front with regular and Diet Coke, water and orange juice."

Almost stuttering, Harvey said, "I'll take a Diet Coke."

Handing him his drink, Wally remarked, "If you’d like something to read, I have The Wall Street Journal, Time, Sports Illustrated and USA Today."

As they were pulling away, Wally handed his passenger another laminated card, reading, "These are the stations I get and the music they play, if you'd like to listen to the radio."

And as if that weren't enough, Wally told Harvey that he had the air conditioning on and asked if the temperature was comfortable for him. Then he advised Harvey of the best route to his destination for that time of day. He also let him know that he'd be happy to chat and tell him about some of the sights or, if Harvey preferred, to leave him with his own thoughts.

"Tell me, Wally," an amazed Harvey asked the driver, "Have you always served customers like this?"

Wally smiled into the rearview mirror. "No, not always. In fact, it's only been in the last two years. My first five years driving, I spent most of my time complaining like all the rest of the cabbies do. Then I heard the personal growth teacher, Wayne Dyer, on the radio one day. He had just written a book called You’ll See It When You Believe It. Dyer said that if you get up in the morning expecting to have a bad day, you’ll rarely disappoint yourself. He said, 'Stop complaining! Differentiate yourself from your competition. Don't be a duck. Be an eagle. Ducks quack and complain. Eagles soar above the crowd.' That hit me right between the eyes," said Wally. "Dyer was really talking about me. I was always quacking and complaining, so I decided to change my attitude and become an eagle. I looked around at the other cabs and their drivers. The cabs were dirty, the drivers were unfriendly, and the customers were unhappy. So I decided to make some changes. I put in a few at a time. When my customers responded favorably, well, I did more."

"I take it that the effort has paid off for you," Harvey responded.

"It sure has," Wally replied. "My first year as an eagle, I doubled my income from the previous year. This year I’ll probably quadruple it. You were lucky to get me today. I don't sit at cabstands anymore. My customers call me for appointments on my cell phone or leave a message on my answering machine. If I can't pick them up myself, I get a reliable cabbie friend to do it and I take a piece of the action."

Wally was phenomenal, running a limo service out of a Yellow Cab.

I've probably told that story to more than fifty cab drivers over the years, and only two took the idea and ran with it. Whenever I go to their cities, I give them a call. The rest of the drivers quacked like ducks and told me all the reasons they couldn’t do any of what I was suggesting. Wally the Cab Driver had made a different choice. He decided to stop quacking like ducks and start soaring like eagles.

I personally and truly love such customer service. Give it a thought, how true it is. How many times we just start our day by complaining "Oh No! It’s a Monday," and then feel miserable the entire day. How many times, have we woken in the morning, felt the excitement within and exclaimed "THIS is going to be the BEST day of my life!"? Now even if after saying that you seem to not have a good day then you can turn around to say and to feel "This too shall pass." At the end of the day, go to bed content that you know and feel right from the bottom of your heart that you have done the best you could. At the end of it, you will be the one who would have changed your own life forever.

Okay readers, the above story makes a point worth considering: "COPING with adversity beats the alternative." YOU can become your own client, and serve your needs in a superb manner, offsetting sadness and downward psychological slides.

Soar with emotionally strong eagles.

Need a friendly voice to help you to stay on course so you can cope better with the illness that you or a loved one is facing? I know of a book that makes those points quite well. It even suggests terrific coping strategies and worldwide resources for getting what you need. Click on

Make Smart Choices to Cope with Medical Situations

B'SD

13 Elul 5769

Here's a joke to illustrate an important point for people facing illness:

Joe bumps into his old friend Bob.

"Bob," he says. "You've put on weight!
Your hair turned gray, man."

"You seem a few inches shorter than I recall.
Your cheeks are puffy. Ya even walk differently.
Ya sound different. What's happened to you?"

"I'm not Bob," the gentleman replies.

"Wow! You even changed your name," Joe says.

Moral Lesson: Patients can err the same way, mistaking any & all medical people to be Information Man/Woman.

Your doctors, nurses and therapists are not Bob - Information Man/Woman - either.

Sure you need affordable insurance, a means for buying necessary medication, coping skills for the pain that seems to make you "crazy," and a way to manage all the mounting details in your medical life.

You want to know HOW to do all that. You politely ask, maybe insist on, or eventually demand answers from your doctors and nurses. NOW.

But your medical team can't possibly know
the answers to all your questions.

Doctors and nurses specialize in medical care. They owe you competence, respect & acceptance. They're not computers or librarians though you wish they were.

You need resources, not a captive audience.

Reexamine your demands. Empower yourself with smart choices and coping information.

Do You Need a Hug?

10 Cheshvan 5768

Facing a medical crisis is frightening. You wonder who will be a good friend to you. Who will help? Will you be cured? How can anybody stop the pain you're in? Can you find anything to smile about? Will you make it to the happy events you want to attend in the future?

So many questions and nobody to give you guaranteed answers. The answers you so much want and need to hear. You sigh, or cry, maybe show a temper to somebody trying to help you. You so much want a wonderful friend to be with you. Someone who never runs out of patience. Someone who can make you smile again. Someone to embrace you like the elephants kissing each other above.

I can't hold your hand or give you a hug, but I can suggest that you read my It's MY Crisis! And I'll Cry if I Need To. It's all about compassion: how to forgive yourself and others, how to face the pain, the questions, and the fear. It can teach you how to become emotionally stronger.

You'll giggle at some of the humorous thoughts in the book. You'll try the ideas that excite you, and best of all, you just might find solutions you need in the RESOURCES section.

Let my book be a friend to you. Read the parts you enjoy again and again. Look at the front and back covers and see all the hands reaching for yours. The opening words of It's MY Crisis! acknowledge your agony. Cry when you need to. Find the License to Cry in the first few pages.

Make Your Emotions Work FOR You, Not Against You!

16 Tishrei, 5768

A survivor of five brain tumors and various treatments to successfully remove them, I'm an avid fan of www.meningiomamommas.org, a site devoted to survivors of Meningioma Brain Tumors. The site has several posts this week about negative emotions following diagnosis and surgery or other treatments. The messages pain my heart.

One of the features of It's MY Crisis! is the number of emotional coping resources that I present throughout the book. I hope that members of the Meningioma Mommas (and Poppas) group, and people with any sort of medical or psychological diagnosis, will make good use of my book.

I want to put in a plug for Liz Holzmer, creator of www.meningiomamommas.org. She is a powerhouse, raising funds and public awareness about the type of brain tumor labeled Meningioma. It is hardly the benign anomaly that much of the medical world believes. Meningiomas are devasting to mind and body, let alone to the heart and soul. ICD-10 creators and the rest of the medical world need to realize this in order to help people with meningiomas to heal faster and better.

ICD-10, for those of you who do not recognize the term, is the name of an important book compiled by the World Health Organization. It lists every known disease and form of medical treatment worldwide. ICD-10 is a resource for insurance reimbursement, statistical research, and overall medical record supervision. It and the MERCK manual are indispensable to the medical industry.

It's MY Crisis! And I'll Cry if I Need to: A Life Book to Help You to Dry Your Tears and to Cope with a Medical Challenge bears praise from medical and mental health therapists, a Fortune 500 motivational speaker, clergy of different faiths, an NIH researcher, and other relevant individuals. They all agree: It's MY Crisis! can help you to bear the strain of a medical crisis. The book teaches you how to EASILY use your emotions to help your healing along instead of passively letting them drag you down in the dumps.

I use humor, slices of real life and a personal understanding of how to redirect deep emotional turmoil for your personal betterment or that of a loved one in my book. That helps me to present my ideas to my readers. Many of them (and their care givers) report significant emotional improvement after reading my book.

Buy my book, ease your heart and mind for a mere $13.95. The "Resources" section of It's MY Crisis! will alert you to global outlets for assistance that you might want or need.

* Free or price-reduced medicine? I list ways to get them.

* Want to join clinical trials and receive free medical care? Find out how in my book.

* Need some uplifting stuff to read or to hear on CD, tape or in mass media? Check out my book.

* Want to hire medical clowns?

* Order meals for the bed-bound?

* Learn how to travel across town or around the world in dignity despite debilitating realities?

Buy It's MY Crisis! and learn what to do in one reading!

It's MY Crisis! is a book to share with loved ones, friends, and clients of medical and mental health organizations. Pharmacists , owners of gyms, spas and other health-oriented businesses can provide It's MY Crisis! to their clientele. Hospital gift shops can easily stock my book.

Buy your copy directly from Booklocker publishing at http://www.booklocker.com/books/3067.html and in select stores. It’s MY Crisis! can be shipped worldwide. Specialty editions are available for large organizations.

You Can Now BUY THE BOOK

21 Elul, 5767

My publisher took Labor Day Weekend seriously, making sure that you can buy my book. Booklocker has a reputation for delivering books by its authors faster than other book vendors. After all, it is the source of materials by Booklocker authors. Go to http://www.booklocker.com/books/3067.html
and follow the prompts.

You can also purchase copies at Amazon.com, but it might be slower to arrive: http://www.amazon.com/Its-Crisis-Ill-Cry-Need/dp/1601452780/ref=sr_1_3/105-0730610-7576447?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188900605&sr=8-3

My book teaches readers how to cope with medical crises emotionally, spiritually and practically. The Resources section informs readers of how to join clinical trials, find cutting-edge professionals, suggested reading materials, resources for ethnic groups with specific disease issues, and more. I recommend that readers buy directly from my publisher so they can receive it faster than through other channels.

Share my book with friends and loved ones. Heal together.

To your good health, Yocheved

Mid-September or Late September

8 Elul , 5767

Snafus in the snail mail system led to a delay in the publication of my book. I know you're eager to read it, and I'm even more eager for that to happen! But fate set up the more traditional mid- to late September scenario for my book's debut. It has long been the traditional time for books of the new season to be launched.

The good news is that you and I will go with the flow and reap our rewards as soon as my book reaches the market. Meanwhile, I still respond to private E-mails upon request, with information from my "Resources Around the World" section. The facts that I share indicate contact information about benefiting from cutting-edge therapies and therapists, reduced-price medications and medical appliances, and a whole lot more.

Food for Thought

July 28, 12 Av 5767

Scott Rose is a NYC-based writer. He read increasingly better drafts of my manuscript over time these past two years. Here is his recent assessment of "It's MY Crisis!":

"One of the things that makes you and your book so special is that in facing a truly dreadful crisis, you summoned inner and outer resources to a positive personal outcome, and you are able in the book to communicate what was involved in your doing that to people who will benefit from learning of your experiences and recommendations as regards coping."

I invite readers of this blog to send comments to me directly or to post them to this blog, as you wish. The interactive forum enables me to share information with readers who need it, prior to the distribution of my book. That arrangement has helped several people already, as you can tell by clicking on "Comments" to my posts.

Here is one of several such "interactive" examples that started with a message that appeared among my personal E-mails. It is one of many instances when the information in my book provided concrete assistance to people facing medical crisis. I removed personal details to protect the privacy of all concerned:

Subject: [BS/RBS list] Urgent appeal to help a young South African boy

Please can you forward this e-mail to any friends or family who may be able to help. A few weeks ago, while [abroad] on [a particular] one year training course for counselors to teens, [a young South African man] was admitted into [hospital] and diagnosed with leukemia.

[He] matriculated last year… is a popular member of [a specific social group]who has displayed leadership skills, drive and commitment to his charges and a love for imparting [knowledge and skills] as a counselor.

Seriously ill, he will now be requiring ongoing chemotherapy and in due course a bone marrow transplant…. [He] will need to be medically treated [in his location abroad] over a sustained period of time. He will need the support and care of his immediate family for the duration of the necessary treatments.

[Several international organizations] have endorsed a fund that is being set up to provide financial assistance to [the young man] and his family while [abroad]. The main areas of need will be in assisting with travel costs, accommodation and subsistence in as well as any other necessities.

* An urgent appeal is made** to the [wider] community to contribute towards this fund, which will be administered by a responsible communal panel with representatives of the above bodies, and the input of a professional social worker. *

*The appeal has been made on behalf of a family that really needs support at this very difficult time. Without it [the young man] would have to undergo major treatment while being separated for a long time from his mother, father and sister and with no immediate family to care for him. *

* *

[Contribution information was included with the message.]

Identity Deleted for Reasons of Privacy

I "CC'ed the writer above as well as some social workers involved with the case with information about potentially helpful medical organizations and individuals named in the "Resources" section of my book. Here is the result so far, a comment by one of the social workers on the case who permits me to use his name:

July 25 2007

Shalom Yocheved

Thank you for this important info

I will pass it on to our Social Worker, ____, who is dealing with the case

Regards, Dorron Kline

The social worker alluded to soon indicated to me that the young man's family is cheered with the list of resources I provided for both the foreign country in which their son is hospitalized, and for relevant resources in the wider world. My goal is to help people to prolong their lives and/or to heal, and to maximize their human dignity throughout their medical crisis. I hope to let you know that this goal is achieved with the young man referenced above, and with other people communicating with me. All the best, Yojeved

More Publishers Express Interest in Producing My Book

June 20, 4 Tamuz 5767

Book publishing is a risky, complicated business, though many people daydream of writing best-sellers. Stardust from famous best-selling authors can close one's eyes and mind to gritty realities. It’s an uphill and interesting struggle to find the right publisher for a particular book. The process is not unlike finding the perfect relationship.

I'm fascinated to witness new expressions of interest from more and more publishers who want to produce my self-help text. These publishers realize the far-reaching sales possibilities of my mansuscript. In the past, some publishers only envisioned "niche" marketing.

"It's MY Crisis" is an opportunity to help other people (no matter where they live, what ails them or how they look at life) with my cutting-edge collection of resources for healing and my simply explained coping skills for finessing medical crises/challenges.

Judging from the international and diverse types of people who've either called, E-mailed or otherwise contacted me about wanting to read the book already, "It's MY Crisis" has quite a promising future.

I look forward to announcing the name of my book's publisher, and the release date when you'll be able to order it online or buy it at your local book store.
