UPDATE: Medical Considerations When Making Aliya

B'SD

Whoa - I'm a bit taken aback at the number of E-mails and calls I've suddenly received, from people asking for information about how to cope with medical conditions when they visit or live in Israel.

I recently wrote a relevant article about that very topic, at the Ezrat Nashim site. See
http://ezratnashim.com/articles and scroll down to find my suggestions about Medical Considerations for Aliya.

Hmm, I wonder if there's a need to alert Prevention Magazine...

Survival in 10 Easy Steps

B'SD

8 Sivan

Whew, the early 21st Century has been through a dramatic time in history for the world at large: Economic collapse, Swine Flu/H1N1 sweeping the globe (after frightening AIDS, Bird Flu, SARS and other diseases have devastated humanity), political shocks, piracy on the high seas, nuclear missile tests, never-ending slaughters of defenseless populations, and two lingering, frightening questions:

"WHAT'S NEXT?" and "What am I supposed to DO?"

This blog usually focuses on physical and mental health issues (as in coping with medical adversity and the severe stress it can cause). But my Self-Help Coaching services expose me to more diverse issues (e.g., spiritual, social, employment, financial, self-esteem, identity crises, moral and ethical matters).

It all comes down to one core issue:
HOW can I/you/we Survive the Situations we're in???

My circle of acquaintances includes some very influential, upbeat people. One of those acquaintances, Rabbi Pinchas Winston, is a highly educated and very amiable educator/writer. He and I have explored the possibilities of how to help people facing increasingly complicated and baffling problems affecting folks around the globe.

Put all that together and you'll understand why I'm pleased to share this announcement from Rabbi Winston's Thirtysix.org organization:

A Miracle that's Unfolding...

B'SD

5 Sivan 5769

I didn't post anything yesterday as I was in emotional shock to some extent, then quite busy on a medically related phonecall made TO me. Here's why:

I keep thanking G'D for the wonderful news I received this week: my prescription for eyewear has been LOWERED for THE 12th TIME since August 2005 emergency surgery to remove my former Petroclival Tentorial Meningioma strangling every nerve leaving my spine and entering my head.

I went into surgery BLIND and nobody quite knew if or how well I'd ever see again. I came out of surgery with one paralyzed eyelid that couldn't open and other complications.

The eyelids are now open almost equally. Strangers long ago stopped asking me why one eye seems to be at half-mast.

My vertigo seems to be significantly less as I can now run downstairs at will, even carrying heavy objects or wearing a heavy backpack. I still walk near handrails when I'm using stairs, but I'm not holding on for dear life anymore. I glide gracefully as I did years ago.

Whodathunk????????

My medical team is in so much shock at the recovery that one of the docs is now consulting with me on how I observe my organic healing diet/lifestyle
and prayers so she can better help neurodegenerative patients at a major hospital for such problems (that's the phone call referenced above).

WAHOOO!! I can see better, I'm not at great risk for more sudden falls/broken bones and my sense of dizziness is markedly LESS! Just a drop left to tell me that the healing is almost 100%.

Oh - women in the 'hood wanna know how I keep my figure. I was puzzled at the recent questions until I realized that I've been walking long and longer hikes without quite realizing that... OMIGAWD I'm walking huge distances without assistance, fatigue or falls!!!! It must be toning my muscles. And I didn't have to join a gym!

MORE MIRACLES!!!!!!!!!

Readers, recoveries are possible. I'd been written off as "going to further deteriorate" by some medical professionals and now I'm showing a prestigious medical practitioner how to promote HEALING for her neuro patients!!!

I'm dancing my way into the Shavuot holiday that begins in a few hours. La da da, G'D is healing a shnook like me!!!!! What a favor!

I wanna Pay it Forward and coax all of you: Pray for dear life, do life-promoting things and hang on for the Physical and Spiritual Rollercoaster Ride of Your Life.

Brain Tumor Talk Radio?

B'SD

People in the media business began approaching me only recently to discuss the development of a health-related call-in radio show. Why? So listeners could ask me questions about a wide range of medical issues and how to cope with them. My book and I have many good answers!

While my resume makes media world rounds, here's a radio show "on call" for you when your doctor is not:

If you have questions and concerns about brain tumor issues (fatigue, when it'll be safe to re-start dying your hair, how does X, Y or Z treatment work, how do I tell my family/friends/co-workers about my diagnosis, will I be able to resume sports activities, etc.) be sure to check it out.

Solutions for Ill People Who Won't or Can't Eat

B'SD

26 Iyar 5769

Let's continue the line of thought about good nutrition.

The need for nutrition is true for any seriously ill person, no matter who is facing a medical crisis or why. Look at the situation from the situation of a sick child, elderly person, or anyone who's ill and their worldview.
Do they lack teeth? Do they have mouth sores that will be further irritated by food and hot or cold temperatures? Is the person's gag reflex going to be problematic?

Are emotions part of the problem?

Scolding is NOT appropriate. Making fun of the person refusing or unable to eat is
cruel, not helpful. The same is true for guilt trips.

Cook up a meal and a plan to get the suffering person to eat it. Focus on pleasure, soothing results, and compassion.

Find solutions.

Use blenders to create smooth, easily swallowed textures (hospitals call blended food "puree"). Straws make food fun for little ones sipping blended food with soup or water added to it.

Warmish jell-o is a quick picker-upper for someone trying to build strength to swallow more nutritious fare (it also soothes sore throats).

Use towels as bibs for larger diners who spill food despite their best efforts to be neat. DO NOT COMPLAIN about the laundry this will cause.

Here's a nice dessert for everyone involved: by helping the ill person to eat better, you'll feel better for expressing a level of kindness unparalleled in the medical world.

Why Kitchens are Important for People with Cancer

B'SD

One of the worrisome - and dangerous - problems for people with cancer is loss of appetite from chemotherapy. That causes an ever-lowering calorie count. Not a good side-effect!

Cancer upsets metabolism. Chemotherapy traumatizes the human body, creating the need for superb nutrition. Side-effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and physical weakness from chemotherapy make food most unappetizing. Both problems combined mean the affected peson keeps losing weight, mostly from muscle loss.

Read about a delightful solution to the problems here:

A Taste of Help to Keep Cancer Patients' Pounds Up

Now, put some thought, family and friendship energy into preparing highly nutritious and visually appealing meals for a person with cancer.
Imagine the good that can do for someone who desperately needs body-building food.

Guess which book addresses the need for nutrition no matter who is facing a medical crisis or why?

Clearing Up Kombucha Confusion

B'SD

25 Iyar 57769

Once in a while some new fad runs wild and people are hurt in the process.

Kombucha Tea passion seems to have swept the "I'll heal myself" world into a bit of a tizzy. Let's take a moment to review relevant facts.

Kombucha might have potential to be a good thing, but some of the people making it are amateurs, ending up with just another sweet drink that harms them with too much sugar. That means risking new dental problems, unbalanced sugar level complications, and increased risks for hypoglycemia, diabetes candida and cancer.

Ouch.

Kombucha tea is traditionally made with white sugar and black tea (two nutritionless non-food items!). This mixture is put into a jar with a particular fungus. The fungus eats the mixture, creating an allegedly pro-biotic mixture that's fizzy (bubbly for you non-English speakers).

Some drinkers find the result "yummy." The problem is that Kombucha tea can't be made with other teas, honey or natural sugar. The white sugar and black tea combo seem necessary for this particular mixture to work. To really make it right, a "master" brewer is called for, to know just the right moment when it is really ready to stop fermenting.

By the way, the fungus "starter" is passed around from other people. You just can't know if it picked up something bad for your health due to traveling from house to house. The "unknown" factor can cause unforeseen problems.

Have you counted how many potential health complications I've referenced above? Care to wonder about what I haven't listed?

If you want an effective pro-biotic drink, ask a board-certified medical professional who practices organic dining for recommendations.

Swine Flu/H1N1 Level 6?

B'SD

24 Iyar 5769

Sorry for the late-in-the-day post. My schedule suddenly filled with some quickly pending due dates in the journalism world (whew, that's GOOD news for me in the chaotic news world) and I'm working hard to satisfy my editors.

Back to this blogpost:

I've alerted you before to potential dangers of the H1N1 (Swine Flu for the scientific vocabulary challenged folks among us):
World Health Organization Statement

I even specified
my travel warning

Why bring all this up?

I'm increasingly concerned at WHO's reluctance to declare a Level 6 situation as it notes progressively far-reaching cases of infection:

Influenza A(H1N1) virus

WHO/PAHO/Harold Ruiz
Antiviral drugs arrive at Mexico City airport, Mexico.18 May 2009 --
As of 06:00 GMT, 18 May 2009,
39 countries have officially reported
8480 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection.

then notes this:

Concern over flu pandemic justified.

WHAT is a concerned person to do in this confusing situation? I suggest that you read
Director-General's address to the Health Assembly

and keep checking in at http://www.who.int/en/ to stay up-to-date on things.

Don't rely on hearsay, rumors, and urban legends. Not even from friends and relatives. DO NOT respond to irresponsible E-mails promising you cures and preventatives for Swine Flu/H1N1.

Stick with verifiable facts.

What Do Smoking, Accidents at Home, Obesity and Mental Health Issues Have in Common?

B'SD

23 Iyar 5769

What Do Smoking,
Accidents at Home,
Obesity, and Mental Health Issues
Have in Common?

You might be surprised to learn the answer: Those four problems pose significant burdens on the health of preschool-age children. Worse, they can badly affect the health of those children life-long!

Want to prevent all that suffering? Great! Here's what to do:

Mom and Dad, stop smoking before the onset of pregnancy. Get medical help if necessary and dedicate yourselves to stopping the habit forever.

Adopt good nutrition practices. Need snacks around the house? Fill the candy dish - better yet a BIG bowl - with nuts, fruits, sliced vegetables, and other high-nutrition/low calorie foods. Fill glasses with genuine fruit juices or water, and skip sugar-filled no-nutrition sodas. Spend the money you'll save from dentist and doctor bills you won't need on something the whole family can enjoy.

Ask health professionals how to make your home as accident-proof as possible.

Study the topic of good mental health practices. Ask questions of respected mental health professionals. Make a hobby of being happy. Be well-behaved even when you feel nasty, unhappy or bored.

And be sure to read this press release from the National Institutes of Heath:
http://www.jhsph.edu/publichealthnews/press_releases/2009/guyer_early_childhood.html

(listen up, medical and mental health professionals read my blog, too ;^ )

If You Work with Formaldehyde, You Need to Know This!

B'SD

The NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH NIH and the National Cancer Institute (

Be sure to pay attention to this paragraph:
"Formaldehyde is widely used for industrial purposes and as a preservative and disinfectant. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies this chemical as a human carcinogen, based primarily on its association with nasopharyngeal cancer. In 1995, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration estimated that approximately 2.1 million workers in the United States were exposed to formaldehyde."

If you've worked with or near formaldehyde, contact your doctor for regular monitoring of you health. And do make dedicated efforts to minimize the danger to your welfare.

Medical Care Alert: Your Social Security Funds Might Not Exist When You Need Them

Travel Warning: H1N1 Spreading "Too Fast"

B'SD

18 Iyar 5769

Back on May 4 I warned you about H1N1's spread and contradictory advice appearing in mainstream media. I also gave you a map for watching H1N1's globetrotting spread.

On May 8 I sent this E-mail to some acquaintances. I've held back from sharing it with you, but now I sense a need to go public with the frightening message:

Influenza A(H1N1) - update 186 May 2009 --

As of 16:00 GMT, 6 May 2009,
23 countries have officially
reported 1893 cases of
influenza A (H1N1) infection.

No rationale for travel restrictions
1 May 2009 --
WHO is not recommending travel restrictions related to the outbreak
of the Influenza A(H1N1) virus.

Now, if an innocent child knew that a
specific illness is spreading throughout
the world because travelers from
Ground Zero (Mexico, in this case) carry and spread it wherever they go,
then that child would decide (rationalize) to stop leaving home.

But WHO, the international health organization, can't put those 2 dots together.

OY.

Yocheved

Readers, I beg you: reconsider your travel plans if you're making any. Why? Because of this disturbing headline:

Swine Flu Spreading too Fast to Count, CDC Says...
If long-respected medical institutions don't issue effective - or worse, issue inconsistent - safety precautions, YOU and your loved ones could become unwitting victims of bad advice.

THAT could be a deadly mistake.

Be conservative. Stay home. Travel AFTER the contagion problem is over.

Proof that long-distance travel is endangering human health is in alarmingly evident supply. But sensible and mutual conclusions by venerated medical institutions are not.

Dedicated and Random Acts of Kindness CAN... Save Lives!

B'SD

16 Iyar 5769

teaches you how to cope with medical challenges. Among the lessons in it is this: the need to advocate for the person receiving medical treatment.

The Resources section of "It's MY Crisis! And I'll Cry if I Need To" includes a recommended reading list among other helpful things. One suggestion is the free Zine (E-mail messages sent on regular basis) called "A Daily Dose of Kindness."

One of the "Kindness" readers recently made some marvelous comments, echoing the advocacy lesson I teach in "It's MY Crisis!" I have permission to repost those comments here (highlights mine):

" My mother was in and out of the hospital
more in than out) over an 8 month period.
She’s very ill. When she was in the hospital, we dealt with all types of
nurses, patient care technician’s, etc.
Some were extremely kind and went
out their way to help. Others were so nasty
they made my mother cry.

She’s totally paralyzed except for [her] head, on a respirator and is totally
aware and awake. My sister and I are her only advocates. We are her 'voice.'

We’d like to let all those who are going
through a similar situation know that
giving up is not an option.

No matter how long it takes,
fight for the patients rights.

We started by addressing the nurses directly. When this didn’t work,
we went to the nurse manager,
then to the patient representatives,
then up to the vice president
of patient relations, then to the
vice president of the entire hospital.

It was a lot of work – hours and hours
of it, but in the end, we got our mother
the help she so desperately needs.

Every case is different.

Keep in mind, most hospitals
are in financial crisis.
Insurance companies pay very little for claims. Still, your patient should
NEVER be subjected to mistreatment.

One example (a very common problem):
[is] if the patient isn’t turned often enough.
Find out the protocol. It’s usually 2 hours.
If it’s approaching the 2 hour mark,
gently remind a nurse.
If anything is 15 minutes or more
behind schedule, you have the right
to complain and try to move things along.

We have a 10 minute rule –
we remind the staff every 10 minutes
until it gets done.

No matter how nasty they get, stay calm.
You need their help, especially for
the times the patient will be left alone.
If it goes on too long (1/2 hour or longer),
we go to a higher person in charge.
The staff is overwhelmed at times,
but they are there for a reason.

Offer your assistance if they’ll allow it.

If you can’t be there as often as you’d like,
call an organization like Bikur Cholim
[YG: a charitable organization for ill people] and see if they can send
volunteers to sit with your patient.
They’re available day and night.

Try to get friends, neighbors, relatives, etc. to sit in the hospital just to
keep any eye out. NEVER
be ashamed to ask for help –

your asking could save the person’s life
."

For information about the Daily Dose of Kindness Zine, contact Shmuel Greenbaum .

Like that story? You just might love my book, which advocates the lesson in it, and other lessons to help the ill person you care for.

World Health Organization Statement about H1N1 Flu

B'SD

10 Iyar 5769

Whew, I'm glad to note that mainstream media did not turn present headlines into an allegedly "Level 6" problem (though I've heard broadcasts - later retracted - claiming this fiction to be true).

I've been monitoring conflicting news reports about the name and danger of the "Swine Flu" sweeping the world. If you call it H1N1 or anything else, the name-change will not affect its harmful power.

Here is a rather definitive statement about "Swine Flu-H1N1" from the most impeccable news source I know of - the World Health Organization:

Please use good sense. And please follow my suggestion to ignore assurances that it is "safe" to eat foods made of pigs. I suspect that this will soon prove to be false. And dangerous.
