How to Get a Good Night's Rest in 4 Simple Steps

B'SD

14 Sivan 5770

I'm among the lucky few people who do not suffer sleep problems despite traumatic injury to my brain*. But other TBI sufferers need sleeping solutions. I hope this item will help to solve your problems. It can reassure you and your loved ones that you're not "making up" a sleep disturbance problem:

Poor Sleep Persists After Brain Trauma (CME/CE)

Trouble sleeping long after traumatic brain injury may be due to disruption of both melatonin production and sleep architecture, a study has found. More than one year after traumatic brain injury, patients had significantly reduced levels of melatonin... full story at http://www.medpagetoday.com/Neurology/HeadTrauma/tb/20276

Solutions exist. Keep to a regular sleep/wake pattern. That means:

  • Relax with quiet, comforting activites such as reading or board games, pleasant conversation and the like before bedtime.
  • Get to bed at the same hour nightly.
  • Use your bedroom only for sleeping and dressing/undressing. Otherwise you risk too many distracting thoughts about the PC, TV, etc. Keep sleeping simple.
  • Try taking Valerian capsules a hour or so before bedtime. Valerian is an herb that induces relaxation/sleep (you can buy it in health food shops and some pharmacies). Let your medical team know that you want to take it so they can advise you of any concerns.

Let me know what works for you. Sweet dreams.

Do You Prefer Print Books or E-Books?

B'SD

Readers, here's my quickie question of the day:

Do You Prefer Print Books or E-Books?

I'm considering going to a print edition with E-book It's MY Crisis! And I'll Cry If I Need To: EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge, too. Want that option?

It'll cost a bit more, to buy the print version, though.

I created an E-book to keep your costs down as you find soothing thoughts or helpful resource information on your preferred monitor. But some readers might want to cuddle up with the paper version of the book in bed, outdoors or somewhere far from a PC or Kindle arrangement.

Let me know your preferences. I look forward to hearing from you at giveretgolani@gmail.com

Free to be Uninsured

B'SD

4 Sivan 5770

MedPage Today has another superb Op-Ed. It addresses the USA's legal dilemma and president Obama's determination to defy free market economy:
Free to be Uninsured.

Obama does not seem to care that he's freezing out poor people from medical coverage. I wonder if that's his actual goal. I'm curious why his critics fail to mention that tax monies could perhaps be set aside in health care funds for all US citizens (Israel does this and it's quite a healthy country) rather than allocated to anti-American or otherwise wasteful causes. So far, all the US president is achieving is excessive stress on emergency rooms. Too many people use them for primary, and all forms of health care.

Read the right-hand margin of this blog carefully. I've been providing terrific worldwide solutions to politicians and insurance rules that complicate your medical life.

Doing for You What the Medical and Mental Health World Can't Do

"Asking 'Why is this happening?'
can only disempower you.
Asking 'What do I want

does exactly the opposite."

"Making something productive of 'This'
is very, very empowering."
-- Yocheved Golani

I've heard fellow author Mitch Albom, author of Tuesdays with Morrie, speak of his charitable efforts. He insists that if everybody pitched in to do what they can, then a lot could be achieved.

I'm especialy impressed with one result of Mitch's initiative in financially damaged Michigan:

I well understand the phenomenon. I understood how to survive a horrific medical crisis and to recover my sight. When? When far too many people in the medical and social services world had no clues about how to help me through or past my medical crisis.

So I spent my recovery time doing for you what the medical and mental health world can't do. Imagine how you can minimize your stress and medical expenses with this book:

How to Feel Better in a Heartbeat!

B'SD

26 Iyar 5770

One of the maddening things about medical crises is that it's so easy to be in a bad mood and stay stuck in it. The thing is like a monster, sucking life out of you and everyone trying to help you.

I know, you want to break out of this problem. So, here's an inspirational quote from a folk hero:

If you want to lift yourself up, lift up
someone else. ~Booker T. Washington

You can use this idea by praising the people at your beck and call. You can thank everyone for doing anything in your interest. Your words and actions can make moods pleasant. Go on, try it. Do it again and again until being gracious becomes automatic for you. You'll feel better in a heartbeat. Everybody else will be better off for it, too.

The Cell Phone Poisoning of America and...

B'SD

21 Iyar 5770

I received some criticism of my concerns about cellphones, especially my fight against the 7 (and counting) cell phone towers in my small town. Here's the give and take of that online conversation:

Critic 1 - "what about people's in-house wifi? wireless links use more power and emit more radiation than cellphone antennae, something that bears looking into, if one is worried about such radiation."

Critic 2 - "That is a good point. It seems a bit hypocritical to fight someone else (who is making a lot of money) and companies (who are making a lot of money), whoare both really serving the community of those who want cellphone servicebecause of the health danger they impose if one self-imposes worse radiationdangers (wifi) themselves because it would be inconvenient otherwise!

(I wonder how far one can take that argument. For that matter, those who eatmargarine, butter and fats, and don't exercise are self imposing a healthdanger (cancer risk and other ailments), and perhaps it is not fair to causea loss of money to others if one is not really serious about guarding one'shealth in other areas when inconvenient ..)

Just food for thought(!) (I am not taking a position or stating anything definitive or clear-cut)"
_____

My response to both critics - "If a person chooses to eat something with battery acid, then wash it down with arsenic, does that mean that those of us who prefer not to have either chemical in our food chain must endure them because we like to eat? I have been warning readers against WIFI and cellphone + cellphone tower radiation for years. Just because I live in the neighborhood does not mean I wish to be exposed to other people's preferred poisons. YG"

Read this report,
The Cell Phone Poisoning of America. And know that it's not just the USA's problem.

Got a cell phone? Hang up on it. Permanently. Lose your WIFI too. Not all technology takes us forward.

Cellphone Tower Radiation Alert!

B'SD

20 Iyar 5770

The world will continue spinning on its axis if we rely on landlines and hang up our cellphones forever. Check out these informational articles by medical researchers:

This Cell-Phone Towers: How Far is Safe? epidemiological study examined people living within 350m of a long-established mast in the Israeli town of Netanya. Researchers found a four-fold (sound familiar?) increase in cancer compared with the general population of Israel and a TEN-Fold increase in cancer in women compared with those outside the 350m zone in Netanya.

If you live 1/4 mile from a cellphone tower
look out!

Why Would You Paint Your Floor Yellow?

B'SD

19 Iyar 5770

I thank my friend David Morris for letting me retool an essay on his blog, Tzedek Tzedek. Here we go:

CAMT is a factory in Israel's Negev desert region. It does metal machining and other material processing.

The manufacturing process removes materials, such as steel, aluminum or ceramics, from a block of other material, using heavy grinding and milling machines.

Bits of material go flying about and liquid slurries splash with much noise and hubbub.

But the CAMT factory is clean, giving the impression of being very efficient – signs that can promote worker confidence in their products and an uncompromisingly high level of workmanship. CAMT workers give the impression of being leaders in their field.

But CAMT machines are reasonably standard for this business. Workers appear to be a standard melting pot of Israeli society.

Yair Shneor, the chief engineer, explains why the floors are yellow. He’d picked this idea up from a visit to Iscar, the tool factory in the north of Israel. Iscar was founded by Israel’s most famous (and richest) industrialist, Steff Wertheimer. Iscar IS the leading company in its field.

The floors of Iscar
are painted bright yellow.

Yair explained that, with a bright yellow floor, not only does the factory look bright and cheerful, but one can also spot any dirt and trash from one end of the manufacturing floor to the other. The floors have to be kept spotless, otherwise messes become obvious.

CAMT’s machines are also kept spotlessly clean. A set of standard hand-tools (screwdrivers, spanners, hammers etc) on the wall, was complete, with a profile drawn around each item, so that any missing item would be obvious.

Production practices and quality assurance seem to state-of-the-art at CAMT.

Having a bright yellow floor presents a dilemma that we can all relate to. On the one hand, it’s great to be seen to be clean. On the other hand, it shows every spot of dirt and any mess.

Now that you're confronting a medical situation, you might want to keep YOUR FLOORS yellow, so to speak, too.

Your life and the quality of your life are at risk. One of the best ways to protect all that is to hold yourself to a higher standard. Prevent slip-ups, mess-ups and missing out on effective tools, preparation techniques and mind-sets. Mentally paint your coping skills floor bright yellow.

Forgetting appointments, losing important documents, and failing to nurture yourself with good humor, good nutrition, exercise and self-respect would be dirty marks on your bright yellow floor.

Do you already have a dirty mark or more on your yellow floor? Use this as an opportunity to get the mop and clean up.

You can choose to repaint your floor in mid-grey, and set yourself a lower standard – or paint it bright yellow, proudly aiming, like Iscar and CAMT, to be effective, competent and proud.

Turn YOUR floor competent yellow! Read
