Compliments are Coming In!

24 Iyar 5768

As a journalist and book/music reviewer I've left myself, the writer, out of the story career-long. I'm unforgiving about self-promotion in what's supposed to be impartial analysis. It blurs the lines. But selling a book I've authored requires that I step into the "picture" despite my preference to live my life simply, without fanfare.

So here's the scoop: A popular website is preparing a feature story about my approach to coping with medical or any crises (trust me, adjusting to life in Israel is no picnic for a former Motown woman who did line dances long before she knew how to dance the Hora and was used to Western world culture. Talk about Culture Shock!). The interviewer is gathering quotes from my friends and acquaintances who've been sharing their thoughts about me and my book. Read on to find out what a few of them think of my spiritual and general takes on LIFE, on ADVERSITY and on GREETING LIFE WITH A GRIN:

“Yocheved Golani is living proof that emuna is the greatest power on earth. With faith and perseverance, the supernatural miracles in her life have become the natural course of events. She is a shining example of what Rebbe Nachman of Breslev teaches, that 'There’s no such thing as despair.'” - Rabbi Lazer Brody http://lazerbrody.typepad.com/

"She amazes me with her strength and femininity. Yocheved makes me laugh and makes it OK to cry as well. We should all grow to posess these qualities that this phenomenal woman holds." - Galia Sapozhnikov, L,M.T, D,Ay

"Yocheved Golani is a determined woman. She has battled the most difficult trials and tribulations and emerged standing with her head held high. I respect her perseverance and highly recommend her book!" - Lenny Solomon, Shlock Rock

"Yocheved is a fighter who does not want to give up, extremely important at this time of history. She knows how to roll with the punches. In spite of difficulty, she remains steadfast in her faith in Hashem (G'D) and His good, and lives to make her contribution to Klal Yisroel (the Jewish People) and the geulah shlaimah (Redemption). If anyone deserves the proverbial pat on the back, it is Yocheved." - Pinchas Winston http://thirtysix.org/

Stay tuned. I'll let you know when the TO-BE-ANNOUNCED site's story about me goes live. ;- D

Slim = Smart in More Ways Than One

22 Iyar 5768

The "Battle of The Bulge(s)" has more at stake that you suspected, according to the May 2008 edition of Obesity Reviews.

The International Association for the Study of Obesity quotes some researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who indicate that "Obesity may increase adults' risk for having dementia."

The announcement was based on 20 years' worth of published obesity and dementia prospective follow-up studies. They show a consistent relationship between the two diseases. I capitalized major points in the following quotes:

"Our analysis of the data shows a CLEAR ASSOCIATION BETWEEN OBESITY AND an INCREASED RISK FOR DEMENTIA and several clinical subtypes of the disease," said Youfa Wang, MD, PhD, senior author of the study and associate professor with the Bloomberg School's Center for Human Nutrition. "Subjects with a healthy body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference saw a decreased risk for dementia than their counterparts with an elevated BMI or waist circumference."

Wang adds, "PREVENTING OR TREATING OBESITY at a younger age COULD PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN REDUCING THE NUMBER OF DEMENTIA PATIENTS AND those with other COMMONLY ASSOCIATED ILLNESSES SUCH AS ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE by up to 20 percent in the United States."

In other medical news, it's a proven fact that women with excess weight in their midsections are more likely to die of heart disease or cancer than thinner women. See Abdominal Fat for details.

SAVE YOUR LIVES WITH A SPOON AND A FORK.
The good news, ladies and gentlemen, is that heart disease statistics are going down with increased international interest in exercise and healthful lifestyles. Seek out a diet plan you can handle and lighten up your load. It'll make eveyone you love happier, including YOU!

Trust me, your self-esteem (and your intelligence) will rise with your reduced weight.

Pay Your Medical Professional Compliments and Say "Thank You," too

21 Iyar 5768

Hmmm, perhaps some patients should read the book pictured above. Miss Manners' Guide to Excrutciatingly Correct Behavior could prevent some serious headaches, perhaps save some lives.

I'm giving some equal time to beleaguered medical professionals today.
Read Wanna Kill Your Doctor? then reflect on how well, or how poorly, you're communicating your thoughts as you face a medical crisis.

This is not merely Australia's problem. Professional medical journals worldwide have addressed the problem of
violence toward medical staff. I've been a patient in Israeli hospitals, witnessing soldiers standing guard to prevent attacks on medical staff and patients alike.
Some of the "clients" in Israeli medical institutions don't appreciate the Jewish help saving or improving their lives. Nor do they like sharing medical materials with Jews.

Politics aside, you owe gratitude and gracious behavior to the medical staff doing its best to serve your needs. Praise your medical professionals for their awesome efforts and say "Thank you" too. They appreciate it as much as anyone. Without that help from your medical professionals, you might not have a life to complain about. Here's one such example:
Cancer Research Bank.

Cranio Sacral Therapy, Organic Foods & Lifestyle CAN Restore Your Health

17 Iyar 5768

It's official. This week's confirmational workup at the hospital-based eye clinic following my unusual case of vision recovery conveyed MORE GOOD NEWS to more medical professionals this week.

My eyewear prescription has definitely fallen for the 9th time in two years. "Unprecedented," is a common reaction to the medical evidence.
"How can this be happening?" asked the head of the department.

Some of the eyecare professionals examining me over time suspect that I will not need corrective lenses in the future. Every aspect of my vision problems are... decreasing and disappearing!

Stay tuned. I'll let you know when one of my doctors writes an article about me. One already mentioned that he's started developing his interesting essay.

What else are Cranio Sacral Therapy and my organic foods and lifestyle accomplishing for me? I just gained another 18 degrees of mobility in my previously broken arm (healing from a Grade Three elbow fracture) - the limb that was almost amputated due to severe bone and nerve damage. My elbow bends another 10 degrees and my wrist bends 8 more than a month ago.

This increased movement ability happened during a full month without OT or PT therapy (thanks to a paperwork snafu that reads right to left).

But my Cranio Sacral therapist and I kept up our scheduled pace. I visited my Occupational Therapist today, after resolving the paperwork mess. She measured my movements for comparison's sake. We've grinned widely at her measuring tools and my healing modality. The evidence is before us. CST is healing me. My arm, eyes, and more are clearly being favorably affected.

John Upledger, the famous Cranio Sacral Therapy trainer is pleased. One of his graduates is my CST practitioner (one of her trainees is another CSTer working on my recovery). She keeps letting him know about my amazing progress.

Change your eating habits. Increase your optimism. Benefit from Cranio Sacral Therapy. And heal, heal, heal. Cope, cope, cope. At minimum, improve your health. Learn how. Buy my book.

Heart Bypass Surgery Does NOT Make You Stupid

16 Iyar 5768

Sorry for the delay in today's post. Some apparently Chinese viruses knocked out my PC. The blog, my PC and I are now back online.

According to the May Annals of Neurology, the good medical news in the world this week is that HEART BYPASS SURGERY DOES NOT CAUSE A DECLINE IN MENTAL SKILLS.

Though many patients seem to complain that their language, cognitive (knowing) and memory skills go downhill after heart bypass procedures, a new study by Johns Hopkins researchers suggests that these problems aren't caused by the surgery itself or by the pump used to replace heart function during surgery.

Here's the linchpin of the study, excerpted from a JHU press release: "... Johns Hopkins researcher Guy McKhann explains that previous studies hadn't compared patients who had bypass surgery to those who had other treatments instead. As such, it's been unknown whether mental decline is a consequence of surgery using the bypass pump, heart troubles, part of the normal aging process, or another cause altogether."

The study involved patients who'd had heart bypass and those who had not. It compared cognitive function of patients who received cardiac bypass surgery with that of patients who received other treatments for coronary artery disease, including pharmaceuticals and stents.

Researchers found that both groups experienced an almost identical decline in cognitive function. The results suggest that THE DISEASE ITSELF, and not any particular treatment, IS THE CAUSE FOR COGNITIVE DECLINE.

McKhann says that the finding "may help the stigma that prevents some doctors from recommending bypass surgery. We don't think fear of mental changes should be a factor in deciding what kinds of treatments you have for your heart."

Young Athletes at Risk for... Heart Attacks?!

15 Iyar

If you're a parent or older teen, you might know the drill: Coach gets his athletes out there, running them hard in the hot sun. The guys feel like they're dying of thirst. They ache all over and some team members have headaches the size of Texas. Everybody wants to rest. The shrill whistle screams "No Time Out." Then one of the players collapses on the field. Ambulances arrive as a lot of lip-biting goes on around the unconscious victim.

Wanna reverse that scenario and prevent unnecessary heartache? You can.

Be aware the some African-American players are at special risk of death from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy - oversized, too-thick heart muscle. It can kill. The victim experiences a sudden cardiac arrest or a potentially fatal heart arrythmia after intense physical activity. Their heart is not beating correctly and the body suffers severely.

The problem was hiding in plain view all along. One very wrong combination of exertion, genetic disadvantage and bad timing is all it takes to reveal the facts.

"Many cases go undiagnosed because the young athletes' healthy appearance and peak physical condition may mask their underlying sickness. Experts estimate that one in 500 Americans has undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. But African-Americans are more vulnerable, with two to three times the rate of sudden cardiac death than in whites," says Johns Hopkins cardiologist Theodore Abraham, M.D.

Get your adolescent athlete, of any skin color, into a cardiologist's office for a full workup and screening, and especially if that teen player is black-skinned.

TESTS SHOULD INCLUDE:

1. Cardiac Ultrasound or Echocardiogram - to measure heart size and pumping function, including blood volume, and to check for faulty valves

2. Electrocardiogram, or EKG, to assess the heart's electrical rhythms

How important is this, really? In 2004, the International Olympic Committee recommended that all athletes be EKG-tested every two years for potential heart abnormalities.

I wish you a safe, healthy summer of fun activity.

Don't Drown the Baby!

14 Iyar 5768

Parents, save the summer scare-fest for teens safely watching horror movies in air-conditioned movie theaters. Check out this information for sparing overly hot babies from medical nightmares: The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions recently alerted parents and other childcare-givers that...

"TOO MUCH WATER RAISES SEIZURE RISK IN BABIES
--Breast milk, formula best for hydration"

Hopkins pediatrician and head of the Children's Emergency Department Dr. Allen Walker, M.D., says ""Babies need extra fluids in the hot weather, but straight water is not one of them. "A parent's natural instinct is to give the baby water to prevent dehydration, but too much water can disrupt the delicate balance in a baby's body, leading to water intoxication. Before you know it, the baby is seizing."

Walker says that ADDING WATER TO FORMULA IS DANGEROUS. Babies under a year of age need Mom's milk or formula. Straight water can lead straight to the emergency room - NOT what the baby needs!

SYMPTOMS OF WATER INTOXICATION in infants include:

* Changes in Mental Status, i.e., unusual irritability or drowsiness
* Low Body Temperature, usually 97 degrees or less
* Facial Swelling or Puffiness
* Seizures

"Though any infant who consumes too much water can suffer water intoxication, the risk is highest among children who are already dehydrated, typically after a bout with viral or bacterial infections that cause vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms of dehydration in a young child include dry mouth, increased thirst, irritability and reduced sweating and urination. An easy way to spot dehydration is if a child has fewer than three wet diapers in 24 hours," Walker says.

Real Men Don't Need Dairy Foods. NOBODY Does!

11 Iyar 5768

It takes A LOT to make me post a Friday update. I like long weekends ;^ )

But this update shouldn't wait. MEN, this one's for you.

ACCORDING TO this Departments of Nutrition and Epidemiology Harvard University School of Public Heath study, dairy intake can cause PROSTATE CANCER in men.

Skip the Milk Mustache.

Many people unwittingly endanger their health with dairy products. Lots of adults believe that dairy foods are nutritional for human bodies. "They're not," according to Dr. Neal Barnard of
The Physician's Committe for Responsible Medicine. He often speaks of clinical evidence showing that human consumption of dairy foods can lead to diabetes and other health problems.

Cow milk is good for young cows and goat milk is great for kids with four feet, tails and shaggy coats. But the stuff's NOT for humans.

Organic or not, dairy items do not belong in human bodies past infancy. The ideal form of dairy nutrition for human infants comes only from Mommy. Second best (if Mommy can't provide) is a baby-compatible formula.

See this
information-packed site to learn about actual medical evidence that DAIRY DOES YOU NO GOOD. IT HARMS YOU.

Men, lose the belly fat. Get your 6-pak abs in shape without dangerous dairy foods. Ladies, learn from the guys. Trim your form and improve your overall health by banning dairy foods from your menu.

And get a load of this insight about how DAIRY FOODS CAN DAMAGE your BONES AND THE REST OF YOUR BODY:
OSTEOPOROSIS.

Parents on Medical Rounds!

10 Iyar 5768

Here's a nifty article about adding family to the medical care team:
Patients' Parents Get a Place in Hospital Rounds.

The wisdom of this innovation applies to patients of any age. Letting sensible, well-behaved family and friends confab with the medical team makes extremely GOOD SENSE! Loved ones know the patient best.

I suggest printing out that article and politely sharing it with your doctors, placing it on bulletin boards throughout hospitals and medical offices.

Patient Empowerment is something I've long advocated, especially with my book. Finally, the people who know the patient best have a voice!

Speaking of Patient Empowerment, check out the National Institute of Health's press release about Annual Food Allergy Awareness Week!

I know, you weren't aware that one exists.
But that's what my book and blog are all about: informing you of great resources so you can make intelligent choices and take charge of improving your health!

CHOOSING OPTIMISM, REJECTING SUFFERING: RECREATING YOUR FUTURE
By Yocheved Golani

It's My Crisis! And I'll Cry if I Need To: A Life Book that Helps You to Dry Your Tears and to Cope with a Medical Challenge explains how I survived a benign brain tumor killing me in 2005. Crushing every nerve entering my head, it was why I’d been having problems using my limbs, swallowing and seeing for months.

I agreed to emergency surgery knowing it could kill me or leave me paralyzed. I sought the slim chance that I’d live with only slight impairment of my facial nerves.

The spiritual lessons involved with my life-saving adventure appear in my book and blog.

But those insights didn’t help me in 2008. I had another lesson to learn.

In December 2007, several bones in my dominant arm broke in a freak accident. An orthopedic surgeon reconstructed my arm with metal plates and pins. Months of hum-drum physical therapy SUDDENLY stopped for my medical professionals. Things weren’t normal for any of us!

Therapists noted that my increasing kvetches (grunts of pain) became ear-splitting shrieks. In January 2008, I felt as if lightning were shooting through my arm, ricocheting off every nerve! Therapy became torture. I fainted several times.

My hand developed a weird glow. Swollen fingers oozed sweat when I relaxed. An emergency room doctor revealed that I had Reflexive Sympathetic Dystrophy, a deteriorating condition of skin, muscles and bones. It sometimes results after a fracture. Doctors don’t know why.

Reduced stress, an upbeat attitude and/or pain-killing drugs help some RSD sufferers to recover within a year or so. But not everyone recuperates.

Doctors ordered gentler physical therapy while remarking on my optimistic personality. Neither prevented nor diminished my pain, though. We had one last option: painkillers.

I reacted poorly to them, almost going comatose!

Suffering’s not my style, coping is. I adore double-crossing the Yetzer Hara (mind-set of negativity) with subterfuge. Knowing that some bystanders had misinterpreted my sobs for laughter and with “upside down mazal” (the time of sudden, G'D-given reversals in luck) Purim approaching, I wondered, “Can I laugh my way out of trouble? Can I trick my body into believing it’s healthy by CHOOSING not to have RSD?”

Then I developed a plan.

Poking fun at my condition weeks later with a colorful costume, band-aid covered Boo-Boo Barbie walked out my door and into Megilla reading (the annual recitation of the "How Jews Were Saved in Ancient Persia") story . I was mimicking history’s most cheerful doll: Barbie always smiles (even with RSD)! And she’d answered “Yes!” to my questions.

I giggled until the day I shocked my medical team with a new reality. I’d laughed away my RSD by March. See me celebrate at

Teens with Drug-Resistant Depression Do Better with...

2 Iyar 5768

Today I'm sharing a breakthrough in the treatment of teens whose depression does not respond well to standard drug therapy.

Too often, medical professionals respond to the problem by switching the young adult to a different drug. That's not always likely to help matters, and it can upset an already troubled person even more.

Now there's GOOD NEWS about treating drug-resistant teen depression: Combination Therapy. It's the simultaneous use of talk therapy and medical treatment. Psychotherapy helps depressed teens, especially in combination with effective changes in medication. Treatment from a competent therapist is the key to making a newer drug regimen ease the depression.

The National Institutes of Health announced in February that "Combination Therapy" works significantly better for about 55% of the teens who become involved with an effective psychotherapist. That's a statisitic to respect.

Compassion is the most important part of dealing with anyone experiencing depression. Compassion can prevent, even cure it. I invite you to see this awesome video before you read one more word:

Make YOUR Mother's Day a Healthier One!

1 Iyar 5768

Boomers, this one's for you. About 78 Million or so have added on years since being teens protesting almost everything in the 1960s. Some of us are senior citizens. Others, such as myself, are at the younger, left-hand side of the bell curve. Despite the age differences, we still have issues in common. Aging Parents for one. And the need to care for ourselves, too.

The year is rolling along and dreary global politics seem to dominate conversation (we didn't exactly succeed in making the world a better place, did we?). Here's how to take a break from it: focus on making someone happy! I suggest that you dote on your mom.

Many of us are
caught in the squeeze of raising children and caring for aging parents. Some of those parents are debilitated mothers, or just moms with some condition or other that must be properly managed with constant care. If you're a woman caught in this situation, you probably want BIG relief, Mommy. And your self-conscious mother and/or mother-in-law probably could use some, too.

Or perhaps you'd like to ease up on your daughter or daughter-in-law ;^ )

Ease the Sandwich Generation stress each of you are feeling. Make your mom(s) and even yourself smile a bit more brightly on Sunday May 11th, Mother's Day, with a copy of It's MY Crisis! And I’ll Cry if I Need To.

Why? Because it's A LIFE BOOK THAT HELPS YOU TO DRY YOUR TEARS AND TO COPE WITH A MEDICAL CHALLENGE.

It can help each of you to be a bit more independent and a lot more cheerful. See the links below and on the right-hand margin. Buy your copy today for quick delivery.

30 Nisan 5768

More bad news about America's economic woes: the healthcare system is sinking and so are financially wealthy people who need it!
Healthcare costs are out of sight!

People suffering illness and all the upsetting emotions that go with it face complete devastation because they cannot access desperately needed medical care. Some doctors can't even afford to provide specialized medical care.

In an age of increasing medical treatment sophistication and effectiveness, this "OMIGAWD I can't afford treatment!" heartache is a nasty nightmare. My book can help you to avoid it!

Until your floor resembles this picture,
you'll need fast, effective references to the care you need, the people who can deliver it and potential financial sponsors for your care

It's MY Crisis! And I'll Cry if I Need To holds such information.

The book's RESOURCES section points out foundations and other organization offering free or dramatically cost-reduced medical care. You can receive State-of-the-Art medical help because of that financial help. The rest of the RESOURCES section highlights cutting-edge medical practitioners and treatments. Hospice, Health and a Speaking Tour!

26 Nisan 5768

I'm pleased to let you know that my message about how to cope with medical challenges/crises and the emotional turmoil that tends to go with them is poised to go global. Well, more global than it has been.

Today, Hadassah Hospital's Social Services Department referred my public speaking skills and book to the social work director at the Hadassah Hospital Hospice Center. Now why would anyone suddenly do that? Read on!

The highly skilled and very experienced people who cared for my severely broken arm as a medical team were in utter shock and total pleasure upon meeting with me today. My face and entire body, including the affected arm/hand, radiate health and optimism. The doctors and social workers well understand the formidable odds I've beaten to attain this achievement. They appreciate that I take the advice I give to others. It clearly works! And they want it to work for the desperately ill patients they treat.

I plan to speak for far more people than those in Israeli hospices and hospitals. Contact me soon to book me for a speaking engagement in your part of the world. My winter Author's Tour is shaping up. Just click on
giveretgolani@gmail.com and let me know your particulars.

And here's a new feature for this blog: a CLIFFHANGER! Just wait until I officially announce which international mental health organization is adding my book to its roster of recommended reading materials! See you next week...
