An acquaintance of mine, RivkA Matitya aleha hashalom (may her soul be blessed with peace), died of her cancer just before Shabbat began in Israel.

Rather that describe my impressions of her to you, I ask that you access RivkA's blog

4 Steps to Getting Unstuck!

B'SD

21 Cheshvan 5771

Pretty splashy image up there, huh? I hope to fill you with as much optimism as that picture implies.

Why?

Jews around the world are reflecting on the Jewish New Year season that passed last month. It seems that everybody else is looking forward to January, but all of us are worrying about the daunting lead-up to it: Thanksgiving season. Xmas parties. Kwaanza fests. Bills. More bills. Tempers. Fourth quarter reports. Bosses cut losses by firing staff. Fear. Panic.

Here's some nifty advice I found in a recent Psych Central Newsletter. I blended it in a way to help you more than the original presentation might:

Here are 4 steps to get unstuck:

Name the stuckness – In other words, simply say to yourself, this is the feeling of being stuck

Find the physical sensation – Take a brief scan of your body and become aware of where you notice the greatest sensation. Get a sense of how large it is, it’s shape, does it have a color? Get curious about it. Getting curious helps us break outside of the box.

See choices – Ask yourself the question, is there another way I can see the situation I’m in? What choices do I have here? See if you can do this without judgment, more as a brainstorm.

If your marriage is taking a beating from you and/or your spouse's reactions to life's little and major stresses, read How to Beat the Odds: Tips from the Very Married.

Take action – Put one foot in front of the other and begin engaging in one of those choices.

Even if the choice doesn’t stick at first, know that this practice in itself is training your mind to get unstuck from the cycles it gets caught in. When you notice yourself wandering into past habitual ways of being, know that is expected and just gently guide yourself back.

E-Book Sales Nearly DOUBLE & THAT Can be GOOD for Your Health!

B'SD

12 Cheshvan 5771

This just in from John Kremer's "Book Marketing Tip of the Week" October 19, 2010:

According to 14 large publishers
who report to AAP's monthly
sales estimates, ebook sales
jumped 172.4% in August to
almost $39 million in sales.

Ebook sales for the entire
year (Jan to Aug) were up
192.9% to $263 million
(that's 9% of trade sales).

You might prefer a paper book which lets you underline favorite passages and to sleep with the book covers spread across your chest. But E-books have their advantages:

1) You can search for, then find specific words and phrases quickly.

2) You don’t pay shipping charges to receive them.

3) And you can read E-books on iPhones, PC monitors and other digital devices.

Ethical Issues: Illness from the Nurse's Perspective

B'SD

11 Cheshvan 5771

Your medical problems are only one side of the story. Consider the nursing perspective and the godawful problems that medical professionals face in providing you with optimal care:

Part Two, Ethical Issues for Nurses:

You need your medical team to cooperate with you, to improve your health, end or accomodate your pain and limitations. But those doctors and nurses face nightmares of their own: fear of felicitous lawsuits, physical and mental exhaustion, lack of knowledge (who on earth could keep current with every medical advance in the world? It takes focus and adequate time to learn them, let alone to find out that they exist). Rude patients, friends and relatives only complicate matters.

End or at least minimize the problems.
Treat medical professionals with
courtesy and respect.

Gratitude would be nice, too.

Testicular Cancer Resource

B'SD

10 Cheshvan 5771

Men, I'm pleased to share this information with you:

The Testicular Cancer Resource Center
http://tcrc.acor.org/

While you're studying it, make a note to read something I shared at LinkedIn only hours ago:

... I advocate the use of superb nutrition
while or instead of pursuing medical
procedures. The effects of nutrition
have been observed for thousands of
years. Their trials are over.

Dr. Dean Ornish reverses heart disease
with food and lifestyle changes instead
of cardiac procedures. Other medical
trailblazers do likewise.

Choosing low-tech lifestyle changes
is risky, frightening and a personal
judgment call.

It's not a sure thing in any manner.
But documented evidence proves that
alternative healing/prevention
techniques do succeed.

I'm marketing a feature story I wrote
about extremely effective low-tech
solutions for making the most of the
remaining vision in brain-injured
patients. The lesson of the medical
experts quoted in my piece is this:
Western medicine too often opts for
expensive procedures and/or
medications when less lucrative,
equally or more effective solutions
exist. Patients are not necessarily
fully informed of those low-cost,
low-risk and high-yield options.

Medical practitioners are pressured
to make sustainable incomes as
insurance companies pull their
financial chains.

It all makes for a moral mess...

You need people to cooperate with you, to help with your healthcare. But they complain that you're moody, short-tempered and forgetful (Who wouldn't be in this situation?). And medical expenses are on everybody's nerves right now aren't they?

End the problems. Take some uncertainty, complaining and whining out of your medical life. Get your grin back. Save money on the information in

Save Water Sensibly

B'SD

7 Cheshvan 5771

Today's Blog Action Day and the topic is WATER!

Israel, where I live, is serious about conserving water

Check out these
Indoor Water Saving Tips
from Renee Halpert
Manager,
Forum Shemesh Yehuda
(a non-profit
environmental forum):

1. Educate your family about Water Conservation.
Create signs you can post in kitchens and bathrooms. Look up rainfall statistics and the Kinneret water levels on the web (see http://savethekinneret.com/)

2. Use your Water Meter to check for hidden water leaks. Read the house water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, a leak exists.

3. Check Faucets and Pipes for Leaks.
A small drip from a worn faucet washer can waste 80 liters of water per day. Larger leaks can waste hundreds of liters.

4. Check your TOILETS for eaks.
Put a little food coloring in your toilet tank. If, without flushing, the color begins to appear in the bowl within 30 minutes, you have a leak that should be repaired immediately. Most replacement parts are inexpensive and easy to install.

5. Don't use the toilet as a Wastebasket.
For each facial tissue or other small bit of trash you flush, 3 to 10 liters of water is wasted. Flush only toilet paper. If you're determined to prevent germs from spreading, toss your wastebasket more often.

6. Install a Dual-Flush toilet tank, or dual-flush mechanism in your existing tank. A 'small' flush on this type of tank is only 3 liters. If changing your toilet isn't an option, partially fill a 1.5 liter water bottle with water, and place that in your toilet tank, to reduce the amount of water needed to fill the tank and flush.

7. Install water-saving Shower Heads and Low-Flow faucet aerators.
Inexpensive water-saving shower heads or restrictors are easy for the homeowner to install. Also, long showers can use 20 liters every unneeded minute. Limit your showers to the time it takes to soap up, wash down and rinse off.

All household faucets should be fit with aerators. This is the single best home water conservation method and it's also the cheapest!

8. Take Shorter Showers.
To cut down on water use turn off the shower while soaping up or shampooing, then turn it back on to rinse. (ladies ? same for shaving!) Depending on how much water pressure you use, a four-minute shower can use up to 80 liters of water!

9. Keep a BUCKET in each bathroom. Place it under the tap to catch the water that runs while you wait for the shower to warm up. Use this water for hand-washing, toilet flushing, laundry, etc. (YG: You'll be AMAZED at how much water you'll save!)

10. Turn off the water after you wet your toothbrush.
There is no need to keep the water running while brushing your teeth. Just wet your brush and fill a glass for mouth rinsing. (YG: Clean your spit with water from one of those conservation buckets!)

11. Use your dishwasher and clothes washer for full loads only.
Automatic dishwashers and clothes washers should be fully loaded for optimum water conservation. Most makers of dishwashing soap recommend NOT pre-rinsing dishes. That's a BIG water saver.

With clothes washers, avoid the permanent press cycle, which uses an added 20 liters for the extra rinse. For partial loads, adjust water levels to match the size of the load. Replace old clothes washers. If you're in the market for a new clothes washer, consider buying a water-saving frontload washer.

12. Minimize use of kitchen sink garbage disposal units.
In-sink 'garbrators' require lots of water to operate properly. Start a compost pile as an alternate method of disposing food waste.

13. When washing dishes by hand, don't leave the water running.
You can gather washed dishes in a dish rack and rinse them with a spray device or a pan full of warm water. If using a dishwasher, there is usually no need to pre-rinse the dishes.

14. Don't let the faucet run while you clean vegetables.
Instead, rinse them in a sink with a stopper, or, better yet, in a pan of clean water. Reuse the water for your house plants.

15. Introduce a system that allows water reuse/recycling (i.e., gray-water from washing machine rinse cycles, showers, air-conditioning).

Outdoor Water Use

For Israel Water Authority laws regarding the 'outdoor' residential use of water. See http://www.water.gov.il/

The new laws include:

* Spring-Autumn: Watering your lawn is allowed via sprinklers only and is permitted only twice a week for a maximum of 30 minutes each time, between the hours of 7:00pm and 7:00am.

* It is strictly prohibited to use a hose to wash your car or to wash any paved area.

1. Water your lawn ONLY if it needs it.
A good way to see if your lawn needs watering is to step on the grass. If it springs back up when you move, it doesn't need water. If it stays flat, the lawn needs watering. Letting the grass grow taller (to 7cm.) will also promote water retention in the soil. In a serious water crisis, many homeowners will opt to let their grass dry out or replace it with water-free landscaping.

2. Less frequent watering for longer periods = better water penetration.
Put an empty tuna can on your lawn. If it fills up in less than the allowable 30 minutes, you've watered enough.

3. Computerized watering systems are far more efficient than manual systems, primarily because there is no possibility of forgetting to shut-off the water. If you water manually, avoid watering when it's windy. Wind can blow sprinklers off target and speed evaporation. Early morning is generally better than dusk: it helps to prevent the growth of fungus. Early watering, and late watering, also reduce water loss to evaporation. Watering early in the day is also the best defense against slugs and other garden pests.

4. Use a Drip Watering system. (YG: Israel excels in drip irrigation techniques!)

5. Check the direction of your watering systems.
Position your sprinklers so water lands on the plants, not on paved areas. Also, avoid watering on windy days.

6. Add organic matter to shrubs and flower beds.
Adding organic material to your soil will help increase its absorption and water retention. Areas which are already planted can be 'top dressed' with compost or organic matter.

7. Plant Drought-Resistant shrubs and plants.
Many beautiful shrubs and plants thrive with far less watering than other species. Native plants will use less water and be more resistant to local plant diseases.

8. Put a layer of MULCH or stones around trees and plants.
Mulch will slow evaporation of moisture while discouraging weed growth. Adding 5 to 8cm of organic material such as compost or bark mulch or adding broken roofing tiles or basalt stones will increase the ability of the soil to retain moisture.

9. If you have an air-conditioner, collect the water in a large garbage can or bucket, for use to water plants, wash outdoor furniture, etc.

Other outdoor water usage

10. If you must wash your car, you are NOT permitted to use a hose.
Clean the car using a pail of mildly soapy water, rinse with a second bucket of water. Better yet, use a "waterless" car washing spray, which you can find in car-accessory stores. Or, go to a proper carwash. Most use far less water than you will use washing your car yourself with a hose. Most carwashes recycle water. (A hose car wash can use as much as 400 liters.)

11. Use a BROOM to clean porches, driveways and sidewalks. Keep a bucket of water handy for the tough areas, but avoid using a hose.

Last year I toured Israel's major water supplies which run from Lake Kinneret in the north to the Negev Desert in our country's south. National water carrier Mekorot also pipes water from desalination plants along the Mediterranean coast. Somehow the national mood often reflects the high/low levels of the Kinneret, our big basin of water.

A Retrocure for Autoimmune Disease or One BIG Mistake?

B'SD

5 Cheshvan 5771

You can heal with wholesome food, pure water, exercise and prayers, or...

Make one BIG mistake.

I was taken aback to read news item http://www.foxnews.com/health/2010/10/04/parasitic-worms-cure-autoimmune-diseases/?test=faces and noticed that the Crohn's sufferer quoted in there mentions going organic at the end of the article.

I asked naturopath Shoshanna Harrari (listed in the Global Resources section of EMPOWER Yourself) about the alleged wisdom of helminthic/worm therapy.

She replied: "They used to recommend tapeworms for weight loss not so long ago as well. It is not difficult to have a healthy intestine and heal from Crohn’s by just eating right. I guess this is one therapy this guy never came across.

"Hookworms drink large amounts of blood
making people anemic and malnourished. Each worm can produce up to 30,000 eggs a day. They are the only worms with actual teeth. A person infected with them eventually becomes anemic, malnourished, mentally slow and weak. They will eventually have abdominal pains, possibly with nausea, indigestion and chronic diarrhea. Chances are he will be very regretful of this ‘treatment’ in the next year or so. It is very difficult to get rid of them once infected, and the Crohn’s he had will look like a picnic."

Woman Recovers from Blinding Brain Tumor, Saves Lives and Her Sight!

B'SD

4 Cheshvan 5771

Blinded by a benign brain tumor killing me while it was crushing all my nerves, I survived harrowing surgery.

Against even bigger odds, I recovered my vision. Medical professionals call my recovery "Shocking," "Amazing," "Unprecedented," and "Miraculous."

They did not know how or that I'd changed my entire post-surgical way of life: food, exercise, sleep time and more.

Doctors tell me that my health has improved so much since life-saving 2005 emergency surgery that it's comparable to the health of a woman HALF my age.

I wrote two highly acclaimed books that describe how I recovered my health and sight. They tell you about how to cope with medical crises by overcoming fear, stress and lack of necessary information. They even clue you in on how to save mega-money on medical care and necessitites!

8 Easy Ways to Cope with Motion Sickness

B'SD

3 Cheshvan 5771

Okay, I let you know how to lower the cost and commotion of the holidays last week. Today's update is about how to arrive with a steady stomach and sweet breath even if you usually throw up during travel time.

By the way, parents,
the suggestions below
can help kids on school
vans & buses, too ;^ D

1. Natural food shops and licensed natural pharmacies sell medications and natural products for motion sickness. Ask the staff to help you to find them.

2. BUS Behavior:
- Sit at the front of the bus, van or car. Looking out the front window helps some people
- No reading!
- Close your eyes to rest OR look out the windows at far-away scenery (for some reason, watching the scene recede is not nauseating)
- Carry airline sickness bags or several plastic bags from the grocer placed open and inside each other, just in case (they provide reassurance and an easy-to-dispose-of collection point)

3. FOOD
- Eat pretzels, crackers, rice cakes (light & easy on the tummy)
- DO NOT drink milk before traveling on buses, vans or cars
- Suck pre-cut lemon wedges
- Eat breakfast before morning travel. Focus on protein and carbohydrates. Leave time to digest the food before boarding a vehicle
- DON'T travel on an empty stomach

4. Miscellaneous
- Chew mint gum, mint or Tic-Tacs
- Lemon drops can prevent vomiting and nausea
- Sniff scented wipes you already packed in your pockets
- Acupressure wrist-bands provide pressure points at the wrist (or have someone teach you how to press your wrist correctly with the fingers of your other hand)
- Chewable Vitamin C can minimize problems

5. Natural and Standard Medications
- Bonine - lasts 24 hrs but I'm not sure it available outside the USA
- Dramamine non-drowsy version – but I'm not sure this is available outside the USA, either
- Pramin - a prescription drug can prevent nausea and vomiting
- Cocculine
- Nux Vomica (these sublingual tablets dissolve under the tongue)

6. Consult a certified doctor or experienced homeopathic practitioner for other solutions

7. Ginger tablets can prevent problems

8. Read this article -
http://www.medicinenet.com/motion_sickness/article.htm

Happy traveling!

Reduce Holiday Costs with Three Affordable, Heartfelt Presents

B'SD

30 Tishrei 5771 (WOW a Jewish month with 30 days! Rare.)

OK, you know how to reduce the stress and strain during your holiday travel. Now I'll share ideas about how to reduce your costs. Why now? Because newspapers and magazines tend to run such stories too close to holiday time, when you can't pull new projects together so fast. Ready? Read on:

Presents do not have to
come with price tags.

1. Do some crafts that will be appreciated. I just turned a denim skirt with lovely trim, but so torn that I can't wear it, into a gorgeous shoulder bag for someone! Plan how you can make something from "nothing."

2. Provide some services. Think out of the box and focus on what friends and family keep asking for. Somebody wants a maid (I keep joking that I need a butler)? Tidy up their garage, home or office, or sweep up messy leaves. Share some of the plants that grew in your garden or do garden maintaintence as your gift to someone special. Paint, repair or move something that needs it as you delightfully surprise the beneficiary. Leave a hand-made card behind with your best holiday wishes, whatever you do.

3. Share some of the jokes and funny stories books, movies or television shows you like, even some ideas in EMPOWER Yourself to Cope with a Medical Challenge
http://www.booklocker.com/books/4244.html

Lighten the mood for someone you love and appreciate. Ease their mind and heart this holiday season. The E-book is full of humor, can-do coping suggestions and money-saving information (including for travelers with medical issues!). Reread your favorite parts of the book together.

Happy holidays!

And puh-leez
don’t send the kids
Trick-or-Treating
this year.

Headlines always mourn
innocent victims of some
sicko who poisoned the
candy or filled it with
pins.

Make safe, easily supervised
home or school parties
instead.

Shuddering at the memories of past hangovers, family fights and delayed connections for getting to where you need to be during holiday season? Read on for quick tips to feeling better when you travel by train, plane or highway traffic:

PACK ASPIRIN in a sealed container (e.g., clean film containers, pill holders from drugstores) to tuck it into a handy pocket for immediate use when necessary. Holiday travel is often a BIG headache.

Airline food is not ideal in many ways. Minimize your problems. PREPARE ENERGY-PACKED SNACKS (rice cakes with no-drip honey and peanut butter, pre-washed fruit, bananas, already peeled hard-boiled eggs, sliced veggies, some chocolates) in sealed-shut plastic bags. Stick to the served salads, rolls and juices if possible. Leave the greasy foods on your plastic plate.

You can PRE-ORDER vegetarian and other SPECIAL MEALS when you book your tickets. Re-confirm those special meals within 48 hours of departure, then again 24 hours before take-off. Sip bottled water and real – not watered down – juice, often.

Liquor is quicker and candy's just dandy if you want
BIG headaches while lugging suitcases, tickets, and family or friends all over creation. Don't do the hard stuff and, please, Prevent Choking Accidents: Avoid liquor and small candies while you're traveling. They're just not worth adding to your list of What Went Wrong this Time.

Does flying hurt your head? AVOID EAR PROBLEMS with an already-purchased package of gum in one of your pockets. Start chewing as soon as the seat belt light goes on. Keep chewing until the ear pops stop.

If you don’t have gum, place your palms over your ears as if protecting them from cold weather. Or hold a paper/plastic cup over each ear. Have an air host-hostess bring you paper towels soaked in hot water if possible. Tuck the cooling lumps into those cups and over your ears. Or hold them down with the flat of your hands to keep the relief in place. These activities reduce air pressure in your eustacian tubes, where ear pain happens during hilly and air travel.

Cranky kids? Losing your own poise? Use some Pre-Packed POCKET GAMES and/or READING MATERIALS. Crossword puzzles, riddle books and crayons with pictures to be filled in can keep kids quieter. Distract bored children with mind games: play "I Spy with My Observant Eye," "20 Questions" or something along those lines.

Feeling cramped in your seat? DO ISOMETRIC and simple YOGA EXERCIZES in that spot: press your palms together – hold – release – repeat. Press feet to the floor – hold – release – repeat. Do stretches, flex/extend and squeeze your toes/hands/eyes and mouth together and apart, one by one, to keep your blood flowing better than it would with too much sitting in place.

PREVENT SORE LEGS. Buy some compression sox or stockings in shoe stores or medical supply shops before flight day. They can help to prevent blood flow problems that pose serious health risks.

DRINK WATER all through the travel time
even if you need to pee later. Trains and planes recycle dry, germ-filled air. Cars heat up from bodies and tempers. Prevent headaches and grogginess by sipping water to re-hydrate and refresh you top to bottom. And, uh, buy some disposable toilet seat covers. Use them well.

Buy one of those NECK ROLLS you fill with air from your mouth, or bring a small, cheap rolled up towel onto the plane for your neck. You'll sleep more comfortably with neck support and not wake up with a sledgehammer sensation. If you lose the cheap towel you won’t feel as upset as if you'd misplaced something expensive.

Use deodorant foot powder before you head to the airport or train. Remove your shoes or boots while you snooze in your seat, for more relaxation.

As for jet lag, I wish you the best.

Sipping water throughout your travel time can help. Eat turkey or dairy foods to induce sleepiness (honest, they make you feel like napping) before bedtime at your destination.

One more thought: keep reconfirming your travel plans. Holidays are notorious for delays, bad traffic and tempers raging out of control. Terrorism threats are adding to the messed up scheduling mix. PREPARE your LOVED ONES about WHAT TO DO IN EMERGENCIES long before you set out with, or, to see them.

Rehearse scenarios
so that

if GOD forbid
you must cope
with disaster,
you can go into
autopilot mode.

Consider wearing a strap-on First Aid Kit or packing one in hand luggage.
